Using a personal trainer

Hi!

A friend's fiancee is a personal trainer, and he said he would come to my house and work with me on what I want to do, using what I had at home. Up to two hours, for only $25, plus a followup! Now I have to figure out what I really want.

Those of you who have used trainers at the gym or wherever, how did you go about setting goals and how did the trainer help you? I've not taken advantage of this guy before because it seemed most of my questions were being answered here by you guys or by Cathe - ie, my inner thigh mush can be worked on by plie squats, floorwork and cardio.

He is familiar with and respects Cathe, so that helps a lot. How did personal trainers help you, especially in your home workouts?

I've never used a trainer. I read all I can. Visit this forum and experiment with what works for my body.

Hi Rose:I hired a personal trainer for a couple of sessions just to make sure I was using correct form when lifting weights.It was worth the money to get their expert opinion.I'll give myself 6 months then hire them again to recheck my routines.

I too do not use a personal trainer; however, just some suggestions for how you could utilize your session:

Have your trainer give you a good evaluation on your form as you execute each lift with a weight; that could be a great safety thing for you;

Have your trainer show you variations on the lifts you're currently doing, to add variety;

Have your trainer do a good classic fitness assessment (RHR, BP, fitness capabilities) to get a feel for how fit you are and set your goals from there.

Just some suggestions -

I only used a personal trainer for a couple free sessions I got at my club a few months back. He helped me so much with my form, gave me ideas for variations on lifting techniques, positions etc. He also had a degree in nutrition so he set up a number of menus for me. It is awesome! I am never hungry and I have lost over 20 lbs following his advice. I am now considering hiring him for another set of sessions since my club is having a killer deal right now on training sessions. It was amazing how much better of a workout I got with him than I do on my own. I think trainers can just push you so much harder, safely than you would ever do on your own:)

For home you could have him structure your weekly workout programs, give you form pointers and maybe even some help on nutrition if he has the knowledge.

$25 sounds like a great deal for 2 hours! I would go for it even if it is only for a few. I don't think my club specials are even that cheap!!!! At minimum he can help you mix things up a bit.
