Urrrrrrrgh!! DH is making me crazy!!

Talked to my husband on the phone while ago. I told him I had gotten us some more protein shake. He ask me if I had ask the lady about the chromium pocalinate he was taking. I told him if he is so sure about it why should I ask. I told him he should see his results the natural way, that is hard work. He told me I should admit that I see the difference in his body. I also told him I would rather see results in myself by exercise and diet. Well I had to hear him say that what did I think protein powder was. I was so mad, but didn't let him know. this is not something I want to fight over. I think protein powder is a different ballgame. Am I right? I hate that he takes these pills. How can I get this across to him without reacting very negative to this as I have been.

Am I overreacting?

Hey Kim. I'm guessing the D in DH is not standing for Dear or Darling today, is it!? I agree with you, protein is different. I'm not sure if your protein is a soy protein or not, but here is some info that you can throw back in your DH's lovely face!!!

1) Next to water, protein is the most abundant material in our body. Our body contains virtually no protein reserves, so we need high quality protein EVERYDAY. 50% of solid parts of cells are PROTEIN.

2) U.S. RDA for protein (50-65 g) is low copared to other nations (it's only 70-80% of Japans RDA). Dr. Bruce Miller, DDS, CNS, estimates U.S. popultion consumes average of only 70-80% of U.S. RDA of protein. "The key to optimum health is adequate, high-quality, complete protein."

3) If you are taking a soy protein supplement:
Phyto-chemicals and phyto-estrogen, which are essetnail for maximum human health, are not found in animal protein. Although they are not nutrients like vitamins and minerals, scientists beleive these plant chemicals show much promise in the prevention of cancer.

4) Animal protein does not contain the essential amino acids in any one serving. The amino acid levels are too low and take too long to digest.

5) Producing an alkaline base in the body improves the immune system and reduces the ablility of viral and bacterial growth. An acid base which is produced when you eat meat and dairy products reduces the immune system, increases the level of viral and bacterial growth and will lead to many problems. Soy products are alkaline based, which is essential for long-term health

6) Most proteins take too long to digest to maintain the amino acid and protein level. The body then must attack the muscles. This is why we loose muscle mass during our lifetime as we get older.

OK, that's all I got for now. If you need more reinforcement, let me know!!!

Robin you are right, the D in DH does not mean dear or darling. Right now I can think of many words that I can use that D for.

My question is, does the Soy protein tasted any different for the Whey protein I take now? I am really particular of how my protein taste. I tried some that clumped too much and whey is my favorite kind. so does it have a good taste?

Thanks for you info!

Hey Kim. I am pretty picky about my protein too! Honestly, I have never tried Whey Protein, so I unfortunately, I can't answer your question! Hopefully someone has tried both.

I use Shaklee's Energizing Soy Protein, and honestly it is the best soy protein I've had (I think I have almost tried them all!) But, it still has that soy flavoring to it. I don't know if you have been reading the "Help...Vitamins" thread started by Rose, but Shaklee does have a 100% money back guarentee. If it is something you want to try, you can order it, try it for a month, and if you don't like it, you can get all your money back. And it is not hard to do. They don't ask why (although you can tell them if you want) and they will credit your charge card that you purchased it on.

I got addicted to the Energizing Soy Protein because it also contains vitamins/minerals and really give me energy in my day. Anyway, sorry I don't know the difference between these two!

I have both..and whey does taste better IMHO. I use a little bit of each of the chocolate powder when I making shakes and stuff. But honestly both me and my SO prefer the taste of the chocolate whey powder better and we were just talking about it last night. The soy isn't bad, its still pretty good though. I just like to mix it up and try to add all different kinds of protein to my diet.

Just another bit of info that I probably should have put on my last post. When you are choosing a complete protein, check to see if it has all of the 9 essential amino acids. It is not the protein that is important, it is the amino acid content of the protein that is important. Shaklee's Energizing soy Protein contains all 9 essential amino acids.

The other difference is the enzymes. Enzymes are essential for protein utilization (when protein is heated to 100° the enzymes are destroyed. The enzymes are necessary for protein utilization). Shaklee does not go over 56° of heat when producing the product.

Soy must be water washed to maintain the Phyto-chemicals and Phyto-estrogens in the soy. Many companies use alcohol to wash their soy. This is why Shaklee uses only water to wash the soy.

Once again, I have no idea how Whey protein plays into all of this. I think I found something to research!

AND MORE INFO FOR YOU AND YOUR DH:

The functions of amino acids (which is found in our protein):
1) Rebuild the immune system
2) Rebuilds teh connective tissue
3) Rebuilds the muscle tissue
4) Rebuilds bone tissue
5) Rebuilds nerve fibers
6) Rebuilds collagen & connective tissues
7) Grade one energy source
8) Special anti-body production
9) Muscle nerve fiber combination

Since we are talking about protein powder, does anyone mind I ask a question about it? Does anyone know of a chocolate one with no saturated fat? The vanilla always seems not to have sat fat, but I can't find a chocolate one with no saturated fat. Kind of annoys me that the Vanilla is actually better for you. I like chocolate. Hehe But I hate contradicting myself, with trying to have the chocolate when I know the vanilla has not sat fat, as I feel like I’m cheating. As even though it’s only 1 mg, if you use it a lot that 1 mg can add up quickly. And it can actually go over the sat fat allowance per day. But then again, I’m small, so my allowance in the calorie section is lower then most.

Hey Kit. I pulled out my Energizing Soy Protein (Shaklee's) and this is the nutrition facts on it:

Calories:110
Total Fat: 1g (does not say that is saturated,)
Cholesterol: 0 mg
Total Carbs: 10g
Surgars (as fructose): 8g
Protein (as soy protein isolate): 14g
Thiamin: 2mg
riboflavin: 2mg
Niacin: 10mg
Vitamin B6: .5mg
Panthothenic Acid: 2mg
Calcium: 500mg
Iron: 2mg
Phosphorus: 250 mg
Sodium: 160 mg

And it contains the following 9 amino acids:
Histidine: 340 mg
Lysine: 900 mg
Threonine: 530 mg
Isoleucine: 540 mg
Methionine: 180mg
Tryptophan: 190 mg
Leucine: 1,160 mg
Phenylalanine: 730 mg
Valine: 690 mg

Thank you Kim and Robin, I'll look for those two brands, I don't mind a 1 g of fat, but I really do try to stay away from saturated. The 3 brands that were at my normal health food store, for some reason the chocolate all had Sat fat, while the vanilla didn't. I couldn't understand why. As if you can make one without it, you should be able to make the other one without it as well. I’m glad there is one out there that doesn’t have any saturated fat. I’ll be cruzing the other health food stores so hopefully they got either one of those brands.

Thanks a bunch I’ll be looking out for these too and pick them up.

Hey Kit! Unfortunately, you can only buy Shaklee products online, so you will not find it in your health food store. Shaklee is running a special for the month of July and they are giving away free memberships (worth $20) (but of course there is is catch! You have to buy a certain amount before your membership is free) If you become member, you save 15% every time you order and get special member "perks".

Hi Haydee!

I have NEVER heard that before, but I will do some researching on it for ya! Do you know why they say soy is bad for body builders??? I just know that I have read the research about all the pluses of soy and women's health. Protein powder (at least Shaklee's) has all 9 amino acids in it, which helps build muscle. You have me intrigued....I'll have to get back to you on that one!!! Let me know if you remember any more details!

Ok, I've been flipping through all my files and research I have on soy and I see NOTHING about soy being bad for weight lifters. I am finding the opposite, that it is good for weight lifters because our bodies use the amino acids found in soy more easily than other forms and thus it helps feed our muscle.

Here are several forms of protein and the length of their chain of Amino Acids. The shorter the chain, the more quickly the amino acids can be absorbed and utilized.

Soy has the shortest chain and takes less than an hour
Fish is next (apprx. 2 hours)
Chicken takes about 4 hours
Beef takes about 5 hours
Pork takes about 6-8 hours to digest (which explains why I always feel yucky when I eat pork!)

I'll keep looking, but I don't know if I'm going to find anything!

You are very welcome Haydee! I like it when people post things that I have never heard before and I have to research it out. It is kind-of fun. It brings me back to my old science-teacher days!
