Update on Instructor Training

It was fantastic! It was two grueling days of classroom learning and studio learning, but in the end, I did really well! I am on my way to being an instructor!

The written test was not so bad. We didn’t get the results, but I went right out of the room and checked a lot of them afterwards and I was right on. I did very well in my studio practical yesterday. On my comments sheet, the trainer wrote “You are perfect for teaching group exercise!” Can’t get any better than that, right!?

She put me on a fast track and I expect to be certified to teach on my own by January! I can team up to co-teach this week. I have a step workshop in late January and at the end of that, if I want to, she will give me my practical exam right then and there with the area manager. Once I pass that (and somewhere in here get my CPR certification), they hire me and I am all set!

This is so much fun! I don’t know why I didn’t make time for it years ago!

I have to say that I am even *more* in awe of Cathe's great teaching abilities after this training. There is a lot that an instructor must do that we, as students, don't even realize is happening!

that is so awesome! it is really fun isn't it?

another thing that I learned to appreciate when I started was that I didn't realize how much thought and creativity went into the classes! There were nights I didn't sleep because I was trying to think of new combinations or was trying to think of what I could do to jazz up spinning, where all you do is pedal. It is great when you try something new and get a good response from class. You are going to have so much fun!!!

Very cool, Christine! That's so exciting! I was actually thinking about you Saturday wondering how it was going. I'm glad it went well. If you don't mind me asking, what company did the training? I wouldn't mind checking into it myself.

Keep us updated on your test results and when you start teaching!

I want to pass along some really important points for teaching a class - have fun yourself, make sure that your students are having fun, and PLAY GOOD MUSIC! Also, keep up on what's current and give your students what they want. Listen to them and appreciate them; be a good example; don't single any one person out for correction. Somebody mentioned one time about a Pilates instructor who poked people with a stick or pole when they performed a move incorrectly - that to me would be a big fat no-no!
Just Do It! :)

We were talking about "nightmare gym experiences" in the training and I could not believe that stories that some told!!!!!!!!!!!! It is only obvious that you don't totally embarass someone, sell products (some lady tried to sell pocket books during class!), single people out, etc. when you are teaching!!!!

Thanks for the tips :)

CONGRATS!!! How wonderful for you. You are an inspiration. I teach step for our community ed and love it. I've always thought about getting certified and you are really making me think. :)

GREAT JOB!
Marcia.

Good job Christine and congratulations!! How exciting for you. Keep us posted so I can live vicariously through you!

Christine! I am so proud of you!!!!!

Congratulations. It will be nerve-wracking at first, but after you get through your first few classes, it will be a breeze. I remember my first step class.... I co-taught with a really experienced instructor. I was supposed to do the warm up and the first 2 combos from the routine, and I went so fast that it only took up about 10 minutes of the class!!! I was like, "Um, okay, you're up Carolyn!"...

It gets easier every class that you teach. I remember Gin Miller said something to the effect of "Working out is like painting a room. Every workout is a coat of paint. The room gets better looking after each coat of paint; the same way your body gets after each workout". I think that way about teaching group fitness. Every class makes you a better instructor :)

Best of luck to you Christine! You sound like you will be a natural!!!!!
