Unclean Eating - Wednesday, May 4, 2005

Terri - you DO NOT want to know what Charlotte thinks about to keep from eating evil foods. Trust me.;)

Dutchie - biscotti are a type of Italian cookie that are double baked. You make the first step, then bake them, then cut them into slices and bake them a second time. They are crispy and wonderfully delicious:)

Please do not give me the recipe cause I want to try them.

Like I'm constantly eying your darn evil chocolate cookie recipe. I'm a chocoholic. There. I've said it. And with Mother's day coming this Sunday, it's a perfect excuse to make some. I'm a chocoholic, and I will not make them. I will not eat them.

Dutchie

Actually, as far as cookies go, biscotti are pretty good on the clean eating scale. This is from a random biscotti recipe I found on the Intraweb.

"Yield: Makes 40; Per biscotti: 86 calories, 2 g. total fat, (20% of calories), 0.9 g monounsaturated fat, 0.3 g. polyunsaturated fat, 0.5 g. saturated fat, 2.3 g. protein, 15.6 g. carbohydrate, 1.5 g. dietary fiber, 7 mg. cholesterol, 25 mg. sodium."

Are you trying to get me over to the dark side?

I have to report every piece of biscotti I eat you know.
And you'll have me do more then just 20 :)

Dutchie

I think my biscotti are pretty healthy (relatively speaking). They are cranberry-orange-pecan and there is no butter or oil in the recipe. There are 3 whole eggs and 2 egg yolks (protein), pecans (good fat) and dried cranberries (fruit). Anyway, I eat two for breakfast and they get me through until lunch.

I don't know the actual nutrional breakdown.

Okay, someone help me. I am resigned to the fact that I can't stop eating today, for some reason. The only things I have to eat are:

1. the aforementioned molasses cookies
2. multi-grain bagels and fruit spread stuff (you know, jam that's all fruit)

So which should it be?

BTW Shelley, as a Canadian, are you aware that we (the Dutch) over flooded with Canadians right now? Bet you don't know why... To keep your mind of the food.

Dutchie

Of course I know that, and of course I know why! It's the 60th anniversary of VE day in Holland! And we Canadians played a key role in that liberation:)

Dutchie,

If you can live in Holland and abstain from stroopwafels - you are a hero in my eyes!!

Was there 7 years and 100 lbs ago and could not resist!!

If I lived in Europe, I'd survive on yogurt and fruit alone - best yogurt and the best strawberries I ever had were in Amsterdam. I would have eaten healthy during my visits there had it not been for the stroopwafels. Oh, and the street vendor fries. Well, and the cheese...sigh...

Joni

I can't resist the street vendor, no. Lucky for me, I don't live in Amsterdam, but in a suburb (sp?) You're right, they are delicious hot and freshly made.... My mouth is watering now. Thanks.

Were you here on vacation?

Dutchie

I meant the street vendor for stroopwafels ;-)

You knew?! Thougt I had you there.

Two of them were even allowed to be at the war monument at the dam with the Queen. Usually only Dutch nationals, but they had special dispensation and a special Dutch medal.

Dutchie

For me, this is my first time posting on this thread since you guys started it because I've been 'behaving'...until last night. I got into the double stuffed peanut butter Oreos. And BOY were they GOOOOOOOOOD!

Gayle

I didn't know they had double-stuffed PEANUT BUTTER oreos!!
Oh noooooooooooooooo!

A street vendor for stroopwafels? I only bought them in the grocery store.. fresh and warm?? Oh my...I definitely wouldn't be able to resist. I used to put them over my coffee or a cup of tea to melt them a little.

For those of you wondering - stroopwafels are "syrup waffles" - thin chewy but crispy wafel cookies with a sweet, caramely thick syrup on between them. You can find them in the US sometimes - but trust me, don't look.

I was there a few times on business for the nonprofit I work for, then I stayed an extra week just to see the sights. It's a wonderful country!!

Thanks. If you've been here a few times, you must have had "hagelslag" with your breakfast. Did you like it?

Dutchie

I ate three of Shelley's Evil Cookies... would it be wrong to admit that I enjoyed every last crumb? }(

It's TTOM and all I want are cookies and Cheetos. What's up with that?!

I just ate a toasted multigrain bagel. Nothing on it, but honestly, my "stomach is full" trigger is on the fritz today!
