TTC...How Long Did It Take You?

As a 31 year old woman attempting to get pregnant, I was wondering what other experiences women across the board have had with trying to conceive. I have been TTC my first child for the last 3 months with no results. I thought it would happen quicker than this, but looking at a fertility chart reveals I have approximately a 15-20% chance for conception each month I ovulate. I am currently charting my cycles hoping to maximize my chances. These odds seem daunting, and I was wondering if there are any other women that found it difficult to get pregnant.

Thanks to anyone willing to share their experiences! If you have any tips, they would be great too!

Honestly, what we did was literally make love everyday for about 4-6 weeks and I was pregnant! It worked both times. I know it can be very frustrating but from what I have read it takes the average couple about a year to conceive. Be patient as stress can also play a part in it! Susan

Our strategy was similar to Susan's but we were on a 36 hours schedule to let his contribution get restocked. It's a good idea not to get up too quickly afterwards and give aforementioned contribution a good chance to swim north:) Being well acquainted with my cycle really helped, God bless my Mom, right from when we started our periods she had us put our initial on the calendar on the first day. It was 14 years later that I realised what a smart thing this was to do. Good luck to you, try to stay relaxed about it, rising stress levels can really hamper conception.

OK...you asked for this...

We TTC with our first son (who is now 3) for about 2 years...6 months on our own and then the rest of the time under the care of a fertility specialist. We were finally successful with injectible fertility meds and insemination (3rd try). Before the 3 inseminations it was just the infertility meds with my cycles being monitored via bloodwork, ultrasounds, and timely "activities".

They found I probably wasn't ovulating so I needed the meds to force me to do so. My bloodwork showed that at 28 I was pretty much pre menopausal...talk about a blow to the stomach!!

However, with my second I shockingly found out I was pregnant with him after leaving the food court having gagged on chicken salad...something told me it wasn't coincidence!! The kicker was my first was only 4 months old when I found out    !! So needless to say my first pregnancy kind of kick started my hormones into action. Since then I've had pretty regular cycles (not necessarily by the books definition...but in comparison to how they used to be). The healthy eating and exercise that have become such a part of my life I think also has contributed to some of my new found regularity.

They also discovered I had pretty serious endometriosis and treated me for it surgically which I think helped me as well. My advice to you would be to not get too freaked out by the odds...it's been three months, give it a few more and then maybe seek some professional advice especially if your cycles aren't regular. It's so true also that you really need to relax about it and not get too stressed out (but I'll be the first to say...EASIER SAID THAN DONE). There's a great book out there...Taking Charge of your Fertility...it can really help you figure out the signs of when it's the best time to really practice, practice, practice :7 :7 :7 !!

Good luck to you!!

Are you reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility"? It is the bible for women who are TTC. I actually just saw it in the library, so you don't even have to buy it! You can just borrow. I do believe it gives lots of tips for maximizing your chances.

Personally, I didn't have any issues TTC, but I come from a huge family and thus am genetically fairly common stock. :)

Good luck to you. I have friends with fertility issues and I know how difficult and frustrating it can be. You should make an appt with a specialist if you don't have any luck in the next three months or so.

Hi, ladies!

Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, I am reading TCOYF--it is very empowering. I am hoping this dream of having a child will materialize soon. I am trying not to obsess which is my tendency. I have a Type-A personality and with a stressful job, I need to practice some relaxation techniques.

Thanks for the good advice!

Dawn,
Oh,where do I begin. I started trying to get pregnant when I was 28 and after a year of trying I had to see an infertility specialist. I was told that I had poor egg quality and was going to be in a menopausal state within a year. Well, we tried 3 round of invitro that resulted in pregnancies but I miscarried all of them. We were looking into adoption at the same time and we adopted our first baby girl Melissa when I was 31. Well, we still wanted to get pregnant so we chose an egg donor and we got pregnant that way and I miscarried again, but then had an instant succuess after that and had my 1st biological child who is Allyson. Well, we were done, but on September 11 (yes,, the September 11th) my 3rd daugher was conceived and that is Mariah. I have no idea where she came from, actually I do know, she was my miracle baby. The most important thing for you to know in trying to get pregnant is never give up and it will happen. You may have to get some help from a doctor if it is longer than a year, but it will happen. I learned from my doctor that don't have sex everyday. Find out when you are ovulating and have your husband abstain from any activity, that way the sperm is a lot stronger and you are more likely to get pregnant. Also, yoga helped me through those tough times. I really nurtured my body with yoga and meditation. Good luck and I know how frustrating and sad every month that goes by can be. Just hang in there and I really liked the book called Infertility by DR. Mars. It was really informative on what tests and procedures you can have done and when. I will be thinking of you and keep us posted.
