My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for about 11 months now. I have been on bc for about 12 years ( I am 32) and am wondering if I should go to a fertility dr. It doesn't seem like a long time to try, but everyone I know get's pregnant as soon as they think about it.
I am asking on this forum because I know there are alot of medical professionals and educated opionions on this board.
Thanks everyone!

Lizzy,
Did you ask this question in the "Fit moms" forum as well? It looks like some of the people who post there aren't necessarily posting in other forums, and they might be able to give you some advice.

i believe the current medical opinion is if a couple has had unprotected sex for 12 months that has not resulted in pregnancy, they are usually referred to a specialist. good luck

I'm not a medical professional, but if I were in this situation, I would get a copy of "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Wechsler. She has some very interesting information in that book. It would be less expensive and less invasive to try her techniques for about six months or so and then consider going to a doctor. Good luck! (BTW, how long were you off BC before you started trying? I know women who were off BC for six months before their cycles became normal.)

Start with your GYN. She'll give you ideas on what to do before going to the extent of a fertility doc--like taking your temp, doing the ovulation kit thing, standing on your head (LOL), etc.

It can take some people a really long time to get pregnant--I have a friend that took over 18 months. She finally gave up "trying" and started planning a trip to Fiji -- for real! They had their money all saved up & were going to the travel agent to book it when she started feeling sick. She was 3 days late, took the test & WHAMMO! So, my suggestion, start planning a vacation of your lifetime! De-stress about it. Think about other stuff & DON'T PUSH IT!

But most importantly, start with your GYN.

I wouldn't worry just yet. Do you have an OB? I would start there and take steps to prepare for the event. You are posting here so a dollar says, you exercise and eat properly but there are other factors as well. I would find a good OB and learn as much as possible about what to do to maximze your chances of conceiving. As you can see, your odds of conceiving are still rising after discontinuing birth contol and 12 years is a long time to use them. If you don't conceive in the next few months talk to your OB about a fertility doctor and go from there.

I found this at Ask.com

"How long does it take to get pregnant?

Once you discontinue the use of birth control, and try to become pregnant:

25% in the first month
60% in six months
75% in nine months
80% in twelve months
90% in eighteen months

When it takes a year or longer of actively trying to conceive, it is generally recommended that you see your practitioner for advice. Infertility can be the reason you have not conceived. Approximately 30% of infertility is caused by male factors, 30% to female factors, and the rest is either a combination or the cause hasn't been found."

Thanks for the advice everyone. I made an appointment with my gyn, so that is the most logical step. Thanks again!

I agree wholeheartedly with this post. My sister is an MD and she had trouble getting pregnant the first time and now (trying again). She recommended "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" to me also. She charted her cycles and knew exactly when she was ovulating (without using the ovulation kits in the stores). It still took her a few months, though, so don't get too discouraged. Good luck!
