True Blood--anyone watching?

This looks like it's gonna be a fun series. Dark, funny, great writing & acting, although just a wee too much sex for my taste. I thought the premier was awesome!

You know, I think I actually read one of the books that the series is based on. But if I remember correctly the main character was a baker who worked in a bakery, not a waitress in a bar. Maybe they changed it to make it more interesting? I guess bakeries don't make for riveting television. :p

Either way, an adequate substitute for Carnivale, except I don't think I'll ever recover from that show's cancellation.

Dark,twisted,sex,blood,depravity............What's not to love, I am hooked! Did you catch Fringe? Kind of like X-files...

YES!!

It's wonderful! My husband and I both love it!
Ok, do you think that vampire is good looking?
He's not my type, but I think he's hot! I think it's that whole bad boy thing:eek:

I've read all the books the show is based on, and Sookie has always worked in a bar....so it must have been a different book you read! If you think of it, post it, cause I love me a good vampire story :) These are written by Charlaine Harris.

I am excited about this show, too, although the sex was definitely more than I needed to see *blush*.

True Blood

Glad to read your reviews! Haven't seen the show yet, but do plan to catch up on it on Demand. :) HBO's original series programs are usually EXCELLENT. Thx 4 the word! ;)

I wanted to catch this one and I think I set my TIVO, but my bedroom tv blew up last night (actually fried itself and got all smelly) and I have new tivo shows already piling up that I can't get to until I buy a new tv. I hope it's good, I need some new tv shows to look forward to.

Hmm..., I'll have to check this out. Maybe it can filled the void left behind from the cancellation of Moonlight. :'(

I am, I am. I really enjoyed the first episode and am optimistic.

Well, it could be the pregnancy hormones, but there is something about Bill the vamp.:D

Maybe it can filled the void left behind from the cancellation of Moonlight. :'(

Why did it get cancelled? I really enjoyed Moonlight and am soooo disappointed.

Autumn - I guess there just wasn't enough of an audience. :'( I've talked to a lot of people who were sad that it was canceled. My mom was actually a huge fan too. ;)

Well crap, what is Moonlight & how did I miss it?

Funny, I don't think the vampire is good looking. I thought he was kinda dorky. But Sookie isn't anything to write home about either. :p Hopefully their personalities will make up for their looks. So far I find Sookie very likable. :)

Kelly, I'll see if I can find the book I read. I know it's one in a series, it was a fun read & very similar to this storyline.

OMG, Moonlight was a vampire detective-like series! I loved it! Here's the description:

Moonlight is an American paranormal romance television drama created by Ron Koslow and Trevor Munson. The series follows a private investigator, Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin), whose bride, Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon), turned him into a vampire on the couple's wedding night 55 years prior; he struggles in the present day with his love for a mortal woman, Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), and his dealings with other vampires in Los Angeles.

It seems I read the ratings weren't bad, but I can't remember. I had read something about SciFi maybe picking it up, but I guess that hasn't happened.

From CBS... Mick St. John is a captivating, charming and immortal private investigator from Los Angeles, who defies the traditional blood-sucking norms of his vampire tendencies by using his wit and powerful supernatural abilities to help the living.

Laura, I agree about Sookie

Did anyone notice the vamp fangs are the lateral incisors instead of the canines? I thought the canines were the vamp fangs? Not that I am a vampire expert. Just one of my AR (anal retentive) observations. ;)

I noticed that too! Not that I knew WTH a lateral incisor was until, ummm, just now LOL.........

Kelly, I found the book, it's called Sunshine by Robin McKinley. I don't think the city in which it's set was ever mentioned, but the dynamic betw. the mortal (Sunshine) & the vamp Constantine, and their personalities were almost identical to the characters in True Blood--she even has some kind of psychic powers. And also a mixture of darkness & humor.

This serious combines two of my loves 1. Six Feet Under dark humor and style (I really loved that show when it was one) 2. Vampire Fiction. I am big dork about that sort of stuff. It started with my obsession I had with Buffy when I was in high school. Based off the first episode I think the show has a lot of potential. Some of the plot lines look interesting. For example it will be interesting to see how the conflict they are setting up between Sookie and her brother plays outs. While Urban Fantasy is a guilty pleasure of mine I never read the books associated with True Blood but I am kind of glad I am watching the show with a more open mind.

Thanks, Laura! I love finding new a series and author to try out.

Jacque1038--Urban Fantasy is a favorite of mine, too. Check out Kim Harrison's series if you get a chance--awesome butt-kicking heroine, Rachel Morgan. The series this show is based on is excellent as well--very smart and funny with great mysteries to solve--I think I posted this before, but they're by Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse, Southern Vampire Series). I'm a Buffy fan, too :) Have you read the Season 8 comic books?

LOL! I'm not even a tooth expert (wrong end of the body lol)..... I'm just nerdy like that.

Jacque & Kellly ~ direct me to vampire fiction. Please!

I have not had as much time to read as I used since I am going back to school. Two authors that I read a lot of was Laurell K Hamilton and Kelly Armstrong. I have heard this said countless time before so this is not a new revelation but I really think the quality of Hamilton's work has gone downhill over the years. Like many my main complaint is the switch from more action based to romance based. I understand that Urban Fantasy is brain candy but her early stuff had mostly action with a splash of romance added in. I just am not interested in reading a book that is just one big long sex scene. However I know there is a market for that. I also do not really care for most of the characters anymore. One Summer I read Kelly Armstrong's writings and enjoyed those. They have all different types of fantasy creatures in them but mainly focus on werewolves. I eyed Kim Harrison's serious on amazon a couple of times but did not purchase it yet. I also never got the chance to read any of the comic books. Are they worth reading?

Well Kelly had some good suggestions. Also Laurell K Hamliton's early works are fun reads. I also enjoy Kelly Armstrongs books but the vampire characters are not really main characters. Urban Fantasy is a guilty pleasure of mine. haha

Oh, I've read all of Laurell K. Hamilton's, too. And I whole-heartedly agree with your thoughts. It's devolved into almost pure porn. Obviously there's a market for that, but it's not what she started out with!

The Buffy comic is AWESOME. It's basically a continuation of the series, with the comic named "Season 8". It's Whedon-ey goodness :)

Kim Harrison's books are great--they take place in an alternate history where a killer virus from mutated tomatoes (I swear it's not funny in the books) wiped out half of humanity in the 60's and the supernaturals had to come out of hiding to help keep the world running. The series takes place in present day with werewolves, witches (an actual different species), vampires, pixies, elves, etc. Very cool world she created.

Jim Butcher's Dresden Files are really good, too.

Laura--sorry to hijack the thread!
