tricks of the trade

I need help too--I spilled hot wax from a green candle on my pine coffee table, & there's a faint green stain now. Any suggestions on how to make this go away?

For spills on carpet:

Immediately throw an absorbent towel over the spill, and then stand on the towel, rotating to a dry part as needed. Then, if needed, you can treat the spill in your usual manner, but there is so much less liquid in your carpet than before.

Re: the salt trick on pet accidents. Pour it on (and I mean pour, like a third of a box) and let it sit until it is dry. Then vacuum it up. I like this because you don't have to actually touch anything wet while cleaning it up.

Use your own spit to get blood stains off of clothes. I learned this in a smocking class and it works. Also, if you get ink stains on your countertop, spray hairspray on it. It takes them right out.

When my teenage son was a toddler, he got ahold of a permanent marker and drew on a cheap, laminated dresser. Rubbing alcohol removed it. I don't know if it would work on fine furniture though.

Hydrogen peroxide to get blood out of clothing... never had a problem... but usually it is my scrubs.

Freshen the disposal with citrus rinds.

Clean the microwave by boiling a small bowl of water... the stuck on stuff wipes off easily.

To remove gum from hair, rub a plain chocolate bar in hair then wash. (someone shared this with me 'cause of my DD long hair :)

I've heard PB too. Imagine the power of a Reese's PB cup!!!! :D

Oh, that sounds sooooo good. I better go do my Yoga. :)

It's a type of hand sewing that you do on children's clothes. Did you think it was a new way to workout?:p

LOL!! I have to agree with you ladies. I guess PB or chocolate is better than lighter fluid my mother used... no my mother didn't burn it out of my hair. But picture it... a 5 y/o little girl with long blond hair... a HUGE piece of pink Bubble Yum stuck in it... her mother dousing it with lighter fluid while she (the mother) smokes a cigarette. :) The gum did slide off the hair, but the picture is a funny.

I am on the phone now confirming this... yup... lighter fluid... she read it somewhere (it was the 70's ya know)... oh, you can use it to get gum out of clothing too. Very useful stuff. :)

Like Lee Anne said...smocking is a sewing term. It is a stitch that was usually used on little girls dresses to gather the material in the front between the neckline and waist. Does anyone remember Polly Flinders dresses for lil' girls?? (Prob not since most of you could BE my daughter! ;-))

Have you tried vinegar? It will neutralize urine. Just use a solution half water/ half white vinegar. Pour it on the area, and let it sit for about half an hour then soak it up. If you have a carpet shampooer rinse the area with fresh water after it dries.
