Tricep question?

My2girls

Cathlete
Hi,

I am not sure if there is a difference or not, but thought I would ask all of you, because I know someone will know! :)

I have a hard time doing tricep extensions when Cathe holds the dumbbell at the ends with both hands and pulls up. I usually just sub in the extensions holding each end of the dumbbell in each hand. Does that make sense?

Is one way better than the other or are they interchangable?

Thanks in advance,

Mary :)

It depends--it seems like holding it at both ends would make your elbows flare? I think if you keep your upper arms close to your ears you're OK. It might not be quite as effective b/c you're shortening the lever, but if you keep better form w/your modified extension you should stick w/it.

I've always had a problem with this move. I have trouble holding onto the dumbbell, I keep pulling my hair and, no matter how light the weight, I tend to arch my back too much and my chin ends up on my chest. I think I might try dividing up the weight with two dumbbells, as you mentioned. I recall doing so a long time ago and, unless my memory fails me (wouldn't be the first time...), I vaguely remember proper form was easier to maintain.

Thanks for bringing this up.

Mary, I'm the same as you and also hold the thick ends of the dumbell in each hand. With this position it's important to drop the shoulders away from the ears and imagine that you are holding a balloon between you elbows which gently draws the elbows to the midline and prevents flaring.

Take Care
Laurie:)

Thanks Laurie!

Both you and Lauramax are making me really think about how I do that move. I think my elbows might be flaring too much, so I will pay very close attention to it when I do it again.

Mary
