TRANSFORMATION CHALLENGE 4/7-4/13

Hi all,

A little information on how to get that 6 pack. Hint: What and how much we eat has a lot to do with it.

Getting that '6-pack'
Stephanie Oakes

Face it, we're midsection maniacs, obsessed with our dream of the perfect abs we'll have someday -- if we can just do enough sit-ups. Visit a gym on any given day and you'll find both guys and gals working their abs with fury and commitment. The problem is, they're often doing it wrong. Waste-of-time wrong.

The abdominals are different only in location, they are not resting on a bony surface, like the biceps or quads -- instead they span like a bridge over a cavern. But that doesn't change basic physiology or laws of science.

The key is to choose exercises that are hard enough to fatigue the muscles, so that they need recovery time to get stronger. Add some exercises that use the abs functionally -- the way they're used in real life. For example, abdominals are used to stabilize the body. Feel this function by holding a push-up position without letting your belly sag. Don't do the push-up -- just keep holding the position and feel your abs going crazy trying to isometrically contract enough to stabilize your body. If that's easy, put your feet up on a weight bench or, even better, a stability ball. Now you'll really feel your abs!

Ab exercises don't melt away abdominal fat. Spot reducing has been disproved over and over again, but it still persists. You can't get rid of fat by repeatedly exercising one body part. Study after study has refuted that. Any physiology textbook will tell you that. Spot reducing is a dead dog -- you don't have to beat it any more.

Even doing crunches in the best form -- you won't whittle your waistline or belly. You may develop abs of steel, but they'll still be covered by body fat if you don't burn enough calories to reduce it.

Doing ab exercises for reducing the waistline is a fool's errand. Reducing the waistline has to do with reducing body fat. Burning abdominal fat is the same as burning fat anywhere on your body: You have to exercise off more calories than you take in. Proper diet and large muscle activity will accomplish much more than a thousand sit-ups a day.

High repetitions are required to make gains. Let's say you want to work your biceps. Would you do 100 concentration curls with a 2.5-pound weight, or 10 with a 25 pound weight? Making abdominal gains follows the same principle: Overload.

The reason we think we have to do so many reps is that we're not working them hard enough. If you find you have to do 50-100 crunches before fatiguing, focus on this: Slow down, and work on perfect technique.

Pull the shoulder blades together on the crunches so you can't cheat by pulling your head forward or rounding the upper back. Make your abdominals contract before anything moves. First the rib cage moves, then the rest follows. Slow down. If you go too fast, you use momentum and not muscle.

Forget full sit-ups:

They primarily strengthen muscles that are already strong, and these are not even abdominal muscles. If you come all the way up, you work your hip flexors, which have nothing to do with your six-pack at all. What's better is to do a variety of exercises to attack the six-pack muscle from different angles, and engage other abdominal muscles.

That "6-pack muscle" is the rectus abdominis, today's glamour body part. Although it's the muscle that shows the most, one of the more important reasons to strengthen the abdominal area is for back health. Just working the rectus abdominis won't protect your back as well as combining a few different exercises that will also strengthen the external obliques, internal obliques, and the transverse abdominals. Variety is the key.

So, I guess we should slow down and really pay attention to our ab exercises and of course pay very close attention to how much and what we eat. Ok, that's my advice for the week. I hope I can follow it.
I did MIS this morning. Hope everyone is doing well.

Outstanding topic Gloria! This morning I did Pyramid Upper Body (making sure to do the ball work FIRST). My arms are limpish.

We have had so much rain/snow over the past few days. I'm really very thankful for it. Of course, it melts quickly - which is nice:D

6 More days until I see my sweet DH:*! Have a great week all!:D

Great topic, Gloria! Abs are my most challenging body part, even though I have a tiny waist. The lower abs can go from enviably flat to poochy overnight! The big difference for me is salt and water retention. No salt (Really tough for me) = flat tummy.

Sunday is walk day for me and DH. Walked Sharon Woods yesterday. A big chilly but that just makes us walk faster and get more cardio in.

Doing great on the SELF Challenge. I have to really work to make sure that I get in the prescribed cardio, but I'm doing it. Once it's in the Palm Pilot it's like a contract. I MUST complete my goal for that day. I'm doing really well with strength, stretching, and the "additonal" lifestyle activity. Good on the eating, too, since I already LOVE fruits and veggies. It wouldn't take much for me to be a vegetarian, except I love salmon. Also, I bake bread on the weekend, so I make sure that I have whole grains. Oatmeal with flaxseed is my normal breakfast.

Have a great week, Everyone! I'll check in tomorrow.

Juli

Hi girls,

No wo today for me. We're heading to Athens to see DS. Today is his 21st birthday. Tomorrow is our day at The Masters. Looks like we'll be in the rain for that. Oh well, I'm sure it will still be beautiful.

Juli, looks like the Self Challenge has been great for you. Such healthy eating habits! You keep telling us about your walks in Sharon Woods. Tell us about it. It sounds so soothing.

Ok, where is everybody this week?

Gloria

Hi Everyone,

Great message, Gloria. Ab exercises make me frustrated, but if I do them the best I can combined with eating better they do respond.

This morning I got the news I've been waiting for-- I can start working out again! I've been to the chiro three times a week for two weeks, now I can start tapering them off. Another bonus I got out of meeting with this doctor, is that she also "aligned" my legs so my knees don't hurt. I was very skeptical at first, but I'll be darned, they don't hurt at all now!

With that good news, I've decided to go back on the CTX rotation for a few weeks. Tonight I'm going to do LL and the floorwork from PS legs.

Fitdoc, is working with the ball problematic? If you have a defective ball, Sports Authority has them on sale this week at 50% off.

Hope everyone is enjoying this bizarre weather that Aprils are known for:p . Have a great day!

Hi guys,
Hope everyone is doing great.
Gloria, thanks for the topic.

I did definition, lower body today. Did one hour of Lotte Berk yesterday.

I am slammed with work.
Take care and have a wonderful day.:)

Hi Ladies --

Aunt Flo came to visit yesterday so I had a rest day. Yoga works very well for me at TTOM so that's going to be my wo tonight.

Gloria -- I envy you! I'd love to go to the Masters. My boss will be there. He's a scratch golfer. He goes every year.

Otisan -- So glad things are back on track! Chiro's do a great job. I can't quite figure out how it works, but they've helped me and they've helped my husband. Several years ago, he was in a horrible auto accident (so bad, I'm grateful that I'm not a widow). He was seeing an orthopedist but all he did was take x-rays. After 5 months, there was nothing happening with his broken collarbone. Then he went to the chiro and she hooked him up to these little jumper cables with electricity and in 5 WEEKS it was fixed. Like I said, I can't figure out how it works but it does. It was a Chiro that recommended that I start doing strength training in addition to cardio. That's when I started doing the FIRM.

Someone asked about Sharon Woods. Cincinnati is know as the "Forest City" (It's even a question in Trivial Pursuit) We have lots of parks with walking/hiking trails. Sharon Woods is one of them. There's a trail around a beautiful lake. It's normally 2.6 miles around, but there's construction right now, so it's only 2.1. I walk it most Sundays after church with my DH. That way we both get exercise and a chance to enjoy nature. I am very fond of birds and animals and I always watch for them.

This post is evolving into a tome. My best to all --

Juli

Good Evening,

Today is a rest day (18 hour shift at work). I'll tell you, today has been a real time of reflection. I've had several families with children suffering from significant illness and it always put things into perspective. I was feeling sorry for myself last night because DH is out of town for 9 days and I am alone with the two little crazies. (Even crazy #3 in Boston is calling at ungawdly hours with silly questions.) Anyway, my life is a piece of cake compared to many others. I read about single moms/dads caring for their children while their spouse is in Iraq - that's a whole lot harder than 9 days.

So I'm going to buck up and keep that attitude of gratitude! Have a great evening. Tomorrow I'll post a splendiferous workout! I'm thinking about getting a new pair of rollerblades for me and the 7 y.o. We can push the toddler in the stroller and cruise around one of our lovely parks here! Weather is supposed to be 70ish.:D

Gloria, enjoy the masters.
Otisan, great news about your health!
Bita, take care!
Juli, Sharon Woods sounds beautiful. What a great way to exercise!

Hi kids. Fitdoc-Sorry they're trying to work you to death. Poor baby. I love your "attitude of gratitude". So true! My DD is taking care of 4 kids while her DH is in war. When I feel even a little sorry for myself I think what she's handling right now.

Otisan-Glad to see you're feeling better honey. Chiros are great, aren't they? Ours is wonderful and amazingly strong!

Juli-Sounds like you're doing well.

Hi to Bita and Gloria.

I did Cathe's Power Hour this AM. We went to Charlotte last Friday and came home Sunday night. Had a great time but not much sleep. Had to catch up on sleeping yesterday before 10,000 errands. Got my hair cut and it feels so much better!

Hope everyone has a great week. I'll catch up later today or tommorow on your posts. Later gators.....Janice

Good Evening Challengers! It must be spring – everybody is out playing rather than sitting at the computer!

Today I had a great workout! I did Pyramid Lower Body then 10-10-10. I then took the kids to Chuck-E.Cheese’s (blech) for a birthday party. The kids had a great time!

(Janice, don’t feel sorry for me, I only have to do that shift once a week. The rest of my job is research I can do mostly at home.)

Waves to everybody! Must grab sleep!

Hi All -- Did Vol. 1 last night along with some yoga stretches.

Got a nice compliment from my hairdresser the other day. She said "You're the healthiest person I know. Your skin glows, you stay slim and your hair is beautiful. You just LOOK HEALTHY." Since my family has some severe health problems (related to obesity and a sedentary lifestyle), I was really pleased to hear that I appear healthy to others. Don't know if this is a new opinion on her part or not. Can't tell if this is from the SELF CHALLENGE.

Anyway, gotta run. My best to all.

Juli

Hi gang. Juli-What a great compliment! Must have made you feel good. I'm trying hard to focus more on good health than the vanity aspect.

Fitdoc-Glad you don't have to do that shift often. I did 10-10-10 this AM too! WHEW! That was tough after PH yesterday. I went a little(Well I THOUGHT it was a little) heavier and I'm VERY SORE! My arms and upper back are killing me! In a good way of course!LOL

Hope your weather is better than ours. It's non stop rain since March 1st! People are getting stuck in mud in their own yards. Supposed to stop by weekend. Sure hope so!

Hi to Bita, Otisan, Firmscorpio, Gloria, and others. Have a great weekend all. Janice

Hi Everyone!

Well, I haven't started working out yet. DF is having a business dinner tonight, so now's my chance. Must do LL.

Janice, were you in Charlotte NC? I hope it wasn't raining there, either. I know what you mean about this cold and extra wet spring, I'm ready for a reprieve. The weather channel said that both of us should be having a drier weekend. Maybe by then the snow will melt!

Juli, I loved the story about your DF's chiro (and a great recovery, too). Last year my PT was great with my knee problem, but a few months later it was hurting again. It is reassuring that they know where to pinpoint the areas that need help.

Hello's to Bita, Gloria, Fitdoc, Wildpony, Firmscorpio, Robyn, Smiley & everyone else. Have a wonderful day!

HE'S HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thomas Samuel was FINALLY born(After 14 hours of labor!) He's 8 lbs, 1 oz and I don't know how long yet. More baby news as it breaks!!!!Janice

YAY! Welcome to the world Thomas!

Speaking of children, my 7 year old pulled the yellow flowers from all the weeds and put them in a cup of water and gave them to me. So sweet!

Good Evening! Most excellent day today. I got the house cleaned, worked on our taxes, played baseball with the sons, and bought new rollerblades for myself and DS2. I am so excited to skate tomorrow around our lovely (huge) Liberty Park now equipped with 2 wide/smooth sidewalks going for miles. <DS2 was nervous about rollerblades. I kept telling him that playing ice hockey and skating on ice was harder than rollerblading. He put the skates on in the store and off he went. He wore the skates through the store, parking lot, car and living room.>

Oh yeah, today's workout was Cathe's BootCamp. I don't know if I'm strong enough to resist buying the Slim in 6 series. Lot's of my cyber pals at Ya Yas are buying this series. I'm going to try to wait until the reviews are in from people I know.

Take care all.:D

Hi Ladies --

It's a beautiful day in Cincinnati and I'm on vacation today. I took a day off to have a long weekend with my DH. We're not going anywhere, we're just playing. Last night we went to see the Lion King. The show has been sold out for months, we were able to get tickets because we got them at the auction for the animal shelter. Of course, we paid way over face value, but it goes for a good cause.

My DH and I hope to get a tee time for today. If not, I'll get some other w.o. in.

Janice -- How exciting! Welcome little Thomas! We've been waiting for you.

Fitdoc -- What a sweet story about DS2!

Gloria -- Best wishes for a drier weekend! My boss is down at the Masters and it's been miserable weather.

Have a terrific day Everyone!

Juli
