TRANSFORMATION CHALLENGE 3/10-3/16

Ok, all you busy ladies. I'll start this week's post again with a little educational material.

Does when you work out determine how many calories you burn?

If you're fitness-minded, chances are you've done it before. Come on, admit it: You've probably exercised in the morning thinking that you would burn more calories than if you exercised later in the day.

This is one case in which the early bird doesn't get the worm, because it doesn't matter. The number of calories you burn during a specific activity doesn't change according to whether it's morning, midday or evening. Rather, the number of calories you burn generally depends on your body composition, metabolism and food intake -- none of which are dependent on the time of day you choose to exercise.

Muscle consumes calories

Because muscle burns calories and body fat does not, the more lean muscle mass in your body and the less fat, the more calories you will burn during physical activity. Additionally, the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you will burn just sitting in a chair, cooking dinner or sleeping.

When people diet, particularly when they are not also exercising, they lose weight but often sacrifice muscle mass. This compounds the difficulty of losing weight and keeping it off. Severely restrictive diets can reduce your metabolic rate by up to 30 percent.

This is, in part, why strengthening exercises are so critical to losing and maintaining weight. Such exercises help you preserve muscle and bone, boosting your metabolism.

Three ways to burn calories

To better understand why the time of day you exercise does not affect the number of calories you burn, it is important to know how calories are used.

• Basal metabolism: This is the energy you use to keep your body alive -- to maintain processes like the beating of your heart and functioning of other organs, brain activities and temperature regulation. It accounts for 50 to 75 percent of your daily caloric expenditure.

Use the formulas below to calculate your approximate basal metabolic rate (BMR). There are different formulas for men and women because men start out with more muscle mass than women and therefore burn more calories through their basal metabolism.

Women: 655 + (9.6 x W) + (1.7 x H) - (4.7 x A) = BMR

Men: 66 + (13.7 x W) + (5 x H) - (6.8 x A) = BMR

(W=weight in kilograms, H=height in centimeters, A=age in years)

• To convert kilometers to pounds: weight in pounds divided by 2.2

• To convert inches to centimeters: height in inches multiplied by 2.54

• Digestion: This accounts for approximately 10 percent of the calories you use to process the food you consume. For instance, if you consume 2,000 calories a day, you burn 200 of them just by digesting the food. In effect, eating helps you burn calories in the same way exercise does, but to a lesser extent.

• Physical activity: Various activities you perform throughout the day consume anywhere from 15 to 40 percent of the calories you burn. Physical activity is the most important component of caloric expenditure over which you have full control.

When people think of burning calories, they think of vigorous exercise, such as jogging or playing tennis. However, many people forget that all physical activity burns calories.

For example, people who take the elevator instead of the stairs -- but get up early to exercise in the hope of burning extra calories -- may be cheating themselves, because taking the stairs also burns calories.

Even activities as simple as getting up to change the television channel instead of using the remote control burn calories. Everyone is somewhat guilty of taking the easy route when it comes to getting somewhere or doing chores. But reminding yourself of the extra calories you burn during even the simplest tasks may help you to adopt a healthier lifestyle simply by taking advantage of your own mobility.

There are many ways to burn calories. The following table lists the number of calories a 150-pound person burns performing these activities for 20 minutes.

In the gym:

• Step aerobics 168

• Stationary bike (vigorous) 252

• Stretching, hatha yoga 96

• Stair-step machine 144

• Low-impact aerobics 132

• High-impact aerobics 168

• Moderate calisthenics 108

• Ski machine 228

Sports:

• Playing basketball 192

• Bowling 72

• Disco dancing 132

• Golf (carrying clubs) 132

• Golf (using cart) 84

• Cross-country hiking 144

• Running (5.2 mph) 216

• Swimming laps 240

At home:

• Cooking 60

• Washing the car 108

• Reading 27

• Sleeping 15

• Watching TV 18

• Painting the house 120

I started a new rotation today. It's Mandy's Challenge on the yaya site. Basicly, it's 3 days of a Cathe strength tape and 2 days of a tape of your choice. I'm looking forward to the change from the tank top rotation I've been doing. The 5 day a week plan sounded good too.
I started off with IMAX this morning.

Debbie, we'll be thinking about you girl. Good luck.

Hi to all,

Gloria

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for a very informative topic, Gloria. I've often fretted about not being able to workout in the morning. Hopefully once the spring rolls around, but it's hard to get up in the dark!

I also like Mandy's rotation- that would work well for PS & S&H. Six days a week is doable, but I prefer working out 5 days.

Debbie, I'm sending you positive vibes!!

Can you believe that the FIRM forum has been obsolete as we know it for a year now? It seems like a long, long time ago.

I'm hoping to get to CST tonight, but I'm planning on a rest day just in case I get home late.

Have a great day, everyone!!

Hi girls. Interesting topic Gloria. I'm one of those early people. My job takes so much out of me that if I don't do it early it doesn't get done. I did Firm Vol#5 this AM. TOUGH ab work in that one.

Hi Otisan. How goes the wedding saga??? Inquiring minds ya know.

Hi to FS, Fitdoc, Bita, Julie, Robyn, and others. (((DEBBIE))) Thinking of you honey! Janice

Hi everyone! Gloria, Janice, Debbie, Juli, Bita, Otisan (and anyone i missed)

Hope things go well Debbie - we are all sending you good thoughts

Think I'll do a 2nd week of ctx. I feel really good after last week. Will do all step today - I must admit this is my least favorite. Kids are both at church group now so I have no excuse!

Relaxed today - it was nice! With my "between job" situation - I just signed up for 2 volunteer things - one a canoe/kyak race and working at an animal shelter :) SHould be fun

Have a good day all!

Happy Tuesday!

Just finished PS CST. Gotta love that tape.

Robin, the canoe race sounds fun. That ought to get the blood pumping to those arms. I'm glad there are people like you who can work at animal shelters. I'm afraid I'd end up with a zoo at my house, and it already feels that way sometimes with my 4 pets. Our church youth group is sponsoring a pet food drive this month, so I can help without having to look into those cute little "take me home" faces.

Hi to all,

Gloria

Hi!
Hope everyone is doing great!
Gloria, thank you for starting this week. Four pets?! That is a lot of work. You must be so kind and giving.
Otisan, I remember that article from Joyce in the magazine!!! Oh my Gosh!!!
Janice, hope you are doing well. Sounds like very busy at work. Hope the baby is doing wonderfully.
Robyn, what a kind hearted lady you are. Animal shelter, that's wonderful.
Hello to all my friends.

About the topic of burning calories though, it is true that the same amount of calorie is burned no matter when we exercise, but the question is from which source?! Is it going to be from the fat tissue, muscle tissue, or the carb of the food we ate?
In the morning, after overnight "fasting", when we exercise, the calorie is burned from our fat tissue use more than if we exercise one hour after eating, because then the calories being burn taps to the carb source first. And of course if the fasting goes longer than overnight, then we are tapping to the muscle (protein) source.
So the calorie burn is the same lets say 400 calories burned during Imax tape, but which source is being "burned" to give that calorie, that is the question.

Today I did, lower body of bottoms up gold, and then 20 minutes of Karen's core workout with the ring. It was tough to squeeze that ring and hold it!!
Have a beautiful day everyone.
Bita :)

Well Bita, that answers my question about whether to exercise before or after breakfast. I want to burn that stored fat, not my bagel. Thanks!:)

Happy Tuesday Everyone,

Well I’m back from my Dr. visit and getting my pelvic ultra sound. Let me say this about the ultra sound, someone owes me a dinner and a movie and I think it’s a little blond technician in the Imaging Center!!! I mean HELLO whoa!!!! Enough said. My Dr. should have results by Wednesday sometime. I’ll let you know when I do.

I am upping my running a little this week by about 10% total. I’m totally enjoying my runs and feeling stronger and stronger. It’s been a few weeks since I upped my calories (around 2000 a day) and the scale is starting to move. I’m trying to have more protein and I think it’s working also. It has been sort of weird eating more, I have had to supplement with protein shakes a few times. Those shakes feel like quite a treat to me. My weekly running is going to be around 20 miles a week now. I’m taking it slowly and not going by the 10% weekly rule. That is just too quick for me. I really like putting my Cathe strength days between my runs I’m lifting heavy and to fatigue but I’m not sore the next day. I think the protein is helping with my lack of soreness too. Any ways today will be a 5-mile run and then some an AB hits w/o.

Have a great day all,
Debbie

Gloria- Your topic is perfect! I have to use these formulas and number games to loose weight and to be certain that I’m getting enough nutrition. You know me and my gadgets, my HRM has been a lifesaver even though I don’t always agree with the stats I get from it. Burner’s HRM and calorie calculator are hit and miss too I suppose. It really takes playing the averages game to figure what is what and then what works best for any particular individual at that. I just know that I completely absorb all trains of thought when it comes to nutrition and proper fuel usage for my body now. I sure don’t want to hurt myself after all the hard work I’ve put into my body. It’s funny to how what worked when I was huge to what it takes now nutrient wise is very different. Before high carb 55%-65% worked best with 20%-25% protein totals. Now I’m finding for me its about a 40%-45% carbs and 30%-35% protein. Of course I fill the rest with good fats. It’s just funny how with my body getting stronger and fit my needs are different. It’s a challenge for me to find/figure out just what those needs are. Ya know?

Otisan- I usually w/o in the late afternoon but if I have to change it up due to appointment or whatever I just go for it. Although the early morning w/o’s are the worst. I’m awful until I have my one indulgence that I just won’t give up, my morning Ghiraradelli Chocolate Soy Mocha. If my espresso machine ever broke the scream would be heard all the way to your coast. I kid you not I’m a bear until I have that drink.

Janice- Any interesting baby stories to share yet?

Robyn- What a great thing to give back like you are doing. That is just wonderful. I’m sure good things will come to you because you are so nice. I couldn’t work at an animal shelter I would be bringing all those cute little critters home with me. Tell us more about this race too.

Bita- Is that ring fun to use? How hard is it?

Waving hello to all other transformers……

Hi girls. Debbie-Know what you mean about the ultrasound. Kind of invasive isn't it? Been there. Baby is just doing great. Julie's already lost 20 pounds and that's in just 10 days! She had a lot of water weight. Nursing is helping her get back to normal.

I got no workout done this AM so I'll do something when I get home. Better close as it's about that time. Waves to all and hope I have more time tomorrow to talk. Have a great night all. Janice

Hey everyone!

Janice - that's soooo nice you are so close to the baby and your daughter.

Yep - I go to the shelter tomorrow for orientation - hopefully I dont come back with MANY animals! a cat "adopted" us over the cold snap so I guess it's meant to be! Oh on the canoe race (sorry for the confusion) I'm going to be volunteering - organizing before and on the day of the race. That's in April 0 hopefully by then the snow will be melted!

Did LL today - All step yesterday. SO this is definetly a CTX rotation.

Tonight is the only night this week my kids don't have anything in the evening so I'm going to go cook dinner and enjoy the evening and homework is almost done - YIPPEEE!

Have a good nite all

Hi All --

It's hard for me to post from work, so I'm sending my greetings from home this evening.

Gloria -- saw the pics, what a cutie!

Debbie -- Isn't the ultrasound a pain???!!! Especially when they want you to drink MORE water! Looking forward to a good report regarding your health.

Robyn -- I'm a MAJOR animal lover, too. I help with one of the local no-kill shelters in my area. I love all animals and right now I have 5 kitties. It used to be 6, but one got old and went to kitty heaven. All of my babies were either strays or abandoned somehow. I've also been a volunteer at the zoo. Do you remember the Beverly Hillbillies? My DH calls me "Ellie Mae".

FS -- I'm doing the Self Challenge, too. Last night I did the FIRM Vol. 1 with my DH. Tonight is Yoga. My Vol. 1 tape has been played so many times, the sound is fading in and out.

My best to Bita, Janice, Fitdoc (the vacation girl), Smiley, Amanda and everyone else. I hope I didn't miss anybody.

Juli

I thought I posted yesterday, I must have hit the preview button instead of the post button. Anyhoo, I did PS CST and cardio from Kari Anderson's Body Tech. I can't get over the great pump I felt from PS! I think I'm going to like this rotation :) Tonight is going to be BBA & some cardio (haven't decided). Today's the one month anniversary of doing Fitday.com. It's still the first thing I log onto every morning, so I'm still smitten.

Have a great day everyone!

Hi ladies,
Hope your day is beautiful.
Gloria, LOL, I do want the stored fat to go before the bagel too!:)
Debbie, best wishes on the results of pelvic US. I am glad you are in good hands. Oh, and yes I love Karen's ring. It is fun and hard. I know that the chain stores' rings are not as tough as hers. I've been using her ring with the total body workout for about 2 years. Nothing works the inner thigh like that. And it never gets easy because the stronger you get the stronger you squeez. It's like yoga or pilate were there is no limit in improving.
Warm hellos to everyone.

I did Mindy's Body Bar Action Circuit today.

Have a fantastic day.
Bita:)

Oh how I missed my "check-in challengers"!:D

Yes - I'm back (hold the applause:p) Hmmmm . . . The Bahamas . . . a long long way to fly . . . very very much a "tourist" milieu. Crowded . . . sorta like Disneyland. Still, the weather was beautiful, the people were kind, and we returned safely and soundly <there's no place like home, there's no place like home>

While there, I did get one serious workout in and many many miles of power walking. The toddler decided he wasn't walking anywhere }( - so DH and I traded off lugging the 40# load around the vast property.

Today I did 40 minutes of Cardio and Weights. I'll do the last 20 minutes tomorrow with Pyramid Lower Body.

It's late - still lots of unpacking to do!

Hi all,

Welcome back Fitdoc. Glad you had a nice trip with your family. Isn't it wonderful to come home to Utah with the wonderful news that Elizabeth Smart was found alive. What a special miracle for her family.

Today was PS L&A. Trying, trying ,trying to keep the eating healthy today. Having a second totm this month. Guess that mentalpause stage is beginning to screw with my hormones. Blah.

Gloria

Welcome back fitdoc!

Hi everyone! Really good CTX rotation... Yesterday did Step Interval (my favorite) today is power circuit

O No it's snowing again!!!

Have a great day everyone !

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back Fitdoc! I'm glad you had a good time in the Bahamas. Your shoulders & biceps must be nice & toned from the "baby body" workout.

Robyn, I loved CTX, I would do it every week if I could. Step Interval is a nice toughie, a good introduction to the IMAX series, I think.

Last night I did PS BBA. After such a great workout to CST, I was excited about doing BBA, but I didn't feel anything from it. I guess I was trying to find the correct amount of weight to use. The T-bars are always problematic, even on FirmStrength. The back keeps sliding behind me and I'm struggling to keep it still while lifting it. The bicep segment was also strange because I never could do concentration curls well. Are you supposed to lift parallel to your body or on an angle? How far are you supposed to bend over? I've tried everything and I still didn't feel anything. Bummer! I think I'll try it one more time and if I still can't get a pump, I'll just do the CTX back & bi's. After the weights, I did Kari Anderson's step portion from "Two the Max", it's only 25 minutes.

Tonight's workout is the wonderful PS L&A. No cardio is needed after that workout!

Warm hello's to everyone :7 Have a great day!

Happy Thursday!!

Well first off Dr. called and my cyst is gone!!! Whoopee!!! She said it must have been cycle related. Whew!!! Now until my regularly scheduled mamo there are NO pictures to be taken of my insides. If I can’t feel it broke on the outside then is doesn’t exist. No more Dr. talk from me to you guys either I promise.

Today is another run 4.5 miles. I’m gearing up for my outside runs again now too. It is so nice outside time to buy new trail running shoes and a water carrier. I love getting my running stuff from Road Runner Sports they are fast and very helpful. Stolz is big enough to take on my runs occasionally too now. I need to get him a running leash. I saw these cool ones that attach to the waist of the runner with a long scrunchee type thing so the slack can be taken up but give the dogs room to be a far distance away, plus it keeps the runner hands free. I think we will practice with that one before we leave the ranch. At this point he runs wild for a little while then settles into a nice stay with me kind of mode.

Have a great day all,
Debbie

Michelle My Bell- Welcome home!! Do you feel relaxed? Are you soooo tan? Are you sooo over fruity drinks? ;)

Otisan- I don’t remember the concentration curls in BBA right now. But if you aren’t feeling anything maybe it’s time to increase your weight amount. My biceps are so strong, always have been even before I worked regularly. Maybe you are stronger than you think too.

Gloria- Sorry about 2nd ttom ugh! If one wasn’t already hard enough. Hey I found this very interesting article about the old vs. the new food pyramid I thought you would like this. I hope this link works. If now it’s in Scientific American Jan. 2003 magaizine called The Governments Flawed Diet Advice. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?colID=1&articleID=0007C5B6-7152-1DF6-9733809EC588EEDF

Robyn- Sorry about the snow. :(

Good Afternoon!

I had a productive day. I did the last 20 minutes of Cardio and Weights and then PLB. For cryin' out loud the hamstrings are screaming for mercy! I cleaned the house then whizzed around Costco grocery shopping like a mad-woman. Did homework with DS and am now working the night shift at the hospital. So - I must be brief.

Debbie - I am so glad your insides are clear! I don't think there are any other tests you could possibly undergo - whew!

Otisan - I have the same problem with the T-bar rows - the back slips and drives me nuts!

Robyn- would ya send some of that snow our way (Utah is dry dry dry)

Gloria - yes, the news about Elizabeth Smart is fantastic. I get choked up everytime I hear anything about the case. Nice to hear some good news!

A happy hello to everybody else. Take care!:D
