Training question for skiers

A question for experienced skiers:

Are there any specific types of training/workouts that you'd recommend to help a beginner improve?

TIA for any responses!

Hello Cathy: How are you doing? My husband has been skiing for over 15 years and myself for about 5 years. Plyometrics are great for skiing preperation. Just make certain you have some great quads, because you will need them! We subscribe to Ski and Skiing magazines. Both of them always have great sections in every issue that pertain to exercises that will put you into shape for skiing. Plyometrics, I love, the exercises are tough, but they will kick your butt. Another thing, on the slopes, keep plenty of redbull and energy bars in your jacket or pack, you want to keep the energy level up. So, to sum up, strong quads, use plyometrics and have fun! Skiing is the best!

Thanks, Robin! I just started skiing this January, and I thought it was great fun but also hard work. (I am working on getting fit again and hope that fewer pounds & greater endurance will help me improve for next season.) I have read a copy or two of both magazines you mentioned--I think I will subscribe, too. What exactly ARE plyometrics though? Lots of jumping and rebounding?

Thanks!
Cathy

Hi Cathy,

I second the recommendation for plyometrics, and also throw in some interval training. I've been a skier since I was 10, and a bump skier since I was 25, and saw the biggest improvement when I started doing intervals regularly.

Also, make sure you work the hamstrings just as much as your quads. You want to keep those muscles balanced to avoid injury. Trust me...this is coming from experience.

...and don't ignore your core!

Definitely check out some of the skiing mags. They can have some pretty cool workouts. :) :)

Hi,
My 8 year old son is an alpine racer. I have to train during ski season and off season just to be able to be 6 steps behind him. The current issue of Ski magazine has an entire section devoted to off season training. Most coaches recommend doing strength training and cardio during the summer, but mostly cardio during the winter. There is a piece of equipment, Skiers Edge, that offers a workout simulating ski runs.

Anything that develops hip, thighs and especially quad strength will help you improve. I thought I had done that, but managed to hit quite a few thigh burners in Colorado.

As far as advancing your ability, roller blading is a great exercise!

Hi,

mostly lurk here but thought i'd add my suggestion for training as I am an avid skier. In addition to an exercise regimen that involves many of the types of exercise discussed above, I have found that the most beneficial training method for improving my overall performance on the slopes is core training and balance training. No matter what level you ski at, you will be surprised how much working on core strength and balance will help you. As we all know, a strong core will help you keep proper posture and alignment that is necessary for efficient, safe, and correct skiing (i'd suggest cathe's CoreMax dvd for a good training program, pilates also). Also, for balance training, performing various strength training exercises (especially lower body) on an unstable surface will help you develop greater strength, flexibility, and control while on your skis. For example, doing squats while one foot is on a plastic balance disk, or doing upper body work on a balance ball (gets core too). A good cardio cross training option is to roller blade. Roller blading, especially in the off season, keeps not only your heart conditioned, but your legs conditioned for the skating motion necessary to power over flat terrain when on your skis. Finally, be sure to incorporate regular stretching. Women are prone to knee injuries when skiing, so keep your muscles flexible will help to prevent problems. I usually warm up before hitting the slopes or take a few easy green runs to start the day to warm up. Hope this adds to the great advice you've already been given. Love the summer but can't wait till winter!
