Trail Mix

Does anyone here make their own? The store-bought stuff mostly doesn't appeal to me. A lot of it has coconut in it, which I hate, and you try picking coconut out of trail mix!

So if anyone has any good recipes, or good ideas, I'd love to hear 'em.

Thanks!

My recipe is pretty simple (but good):

1 can deluxe nuts (almonds, pecans, cashews only)
l bag M&Ms
Raisins

I had one called Peanut Butter & Jelly Trail mix that was good. Here's how to do it:
raisins
nuts
dried cranberries (regular or flavored)
small peanut butter chips

Take any variation off of that by adding:
banana chips
other dried fruits
different kinds of nuts
other small chip varieties
sesame sticks
chex cereal

Trader Joe's has quite a selection & I admit that the one with cashews & cranberries is tasty. But, I usually mix my own. Currently I use dried apples, pineapple & apricots with almonds. I try to stick w/ almonds, peanuts, walnuts or pecans, especially on the trail when you don't want to be eating a lot of fatty food.

Thanks for the question and the suggestions. I waste a lot too when I buy trail mix. Some of the fruit coating is too sweet and some of the other ingredients I just don't care for. Today I mixed cranberries, almonds and Chex Mix, and it was perfect. :9

I like to try a variety of trail mixes. Here are a couple of "recipes" we use: (I hardly use chocolate or coconut)

Basic Trail Mix
Equal parts of nuts and various dried fruits with additions of chocolate or coconut or salty snacks like pretzels or breakfast cereal.
Let's use a cup for an example.
• 1 cup salted peanuts
• 1 cup raisins
• 1 cup M&Ms
Mix and portion out, remembering that 1 ounce provides 140 calories. Adjust the proportions to taste.

Common Additions:
• Dried fruit: raisins, dried apricots, date nuggets, banana chips, apple chips, dried papaya, dried cranberries, dried cherries.

• Nuts and seeds: peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds.

• Chocolate and more: M&Ms, chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, carob chips, dried coconut

• Salty stuff: Pretzels, sesame sticks, oriental rice crackers, salty "party mix" cereal.

• Cereals: Any breakfast cereal, granola

Child's Trail Mix
4 c Chex cereal
1/2 c Dried fruit bits
1/2 c Raisins
1/2 c peanuts
1/2 c M & Ms

I make a trail mix for my husband who has to lower his salt intake.

This is what he loves:
cashews
pecans
walnuts
peanuts
soynuts
flaxseeds

dried cherries (unsweetened)
dried apricots
dried blueberries (unsweetened)
dried papaya

It may sound uninteresting, but its really yummy!

I've never really ate much Trail Mix before because I thought it was high in fat and calories. Is it really that good for energy, etc.?? All of your combinations sound great and I'd love to start eating it, but I'm afraid it won't help my weightloss efforts? But, I will be training for a 1/2 marathon here in a few weeks so would it be effective with that training?
