Trail Mix

I have a question regarding trail mix. You know it's made with dried fruit, and dried fruit has a lot of sugar. Is it good for you or not? I have read both sides and was wondering what this incredibily smart group thought.

Thanks Ya'll!

Yes, fruit is nearly pure carbohydrate but it's also full of fiber & micronutrients. Dried fruit is desirable in trail mix (if you're actually eating it on the trail) because it provides a lot of calories with little weight. At home, I'd rather have fresh fruit.

Dried fruit, seeds & nuts are energy (calorie) dense foods so you have to watch portions. I can ignore candy in the house, but I sure have to restrain my almond consumption.

For those of you who shop at Trader Joe's, try the dried granny smith apples & the pineapple! Yummm.

Debra - I always forget about Trader Joes's! Thanks for the heads up...I didn't realize they had good dried fruit.

Carla - Debra is right on. Trail mix is wonderful and full of nutrients but you do have to watch the portion sizes. A little goes a long way...which is why it's great on the go!

I would imagine it's a popular item especially for anyone who is vegetarian or vegan. I could be wrong here, but I think it fits the criteria.

It is vegan, but I don't know how popular it is among veggies. I'm vegan, and I rarely eat it (though it WAS really popular in the 70's, when I was a vegetarian: we called it "GORP" back then--Good Old Raisins and Peanuts. I used to make several different mixes for the coop I worked at.). I think it's more popular with backpackers (GORP originated as a high-energy food for backpacking, I think).

Kathryn - thanks for the info. Glad to know it is vegan. I just starting reading the "Eat to Live" book and I remember him talking so much about nuts and fruit (including dried fruit). I guess I just thought maybe it was popular still. I went to a local health food store where they have bins of just about everything including trail mix. I was so surprised to see so many of them had added candy to them! They are full of M&M's now. There was one however with lots of exotic fruits and coconut which looked very tasty!
