Total Gym

Hi all - Just wanted to share this (in case you haven't tried it). For those that have a total gym, do you ever use it for squats (only if yours came with a squat stand). When I'm short on time or just don't feel up to going through a complete leg workout, I slide a barbell through the holes on the bottom and put plates on each side, usually totalling 40 pds. I do about 125 squats with feet facing front to target quads and hamstrings and 125 with feet pointing out to target inner thigh and quads (glutes get worked on all as well). I'm always pleasantly sore the next day and have gained lots of strngth and muscle in my legs doing this. I usually do this between leg workouts once a week. Just though I'd share.

Which Total Gym do you have? I think they are advertising an "updated" one or something?

Tell me all about your Total Gym. Is it worth it? Do you really use it much...I am really intersted in this concept. Please do share your experiences with it. :7

Thanks!

Hi Runathon - I have the one from the informercial over three years ago - XL I think. It was reconditioned and came with squat stand, push and pull up bar and harness type things for working inner thighs. I only got it because I was tired of taebo and I wanted to do some strength work. This was all before I discovered videofitness and cathe. Having said that though, I always got a good workout with it. It uses pulley's for strength training using your own body weight. I used it primarily for that and squats, not cardio. It comes with a manual of exercises, you can do quite a few for all body parts and gives you beginner, immediate and advanced programs. I don't use it much anymore except for the squats and occassionally an upper body workout, but I find with all the other vids and dvd's I do, particularly cathe, I just don't feel motivated by the total gym that often. But at the time, it was what introduced me to strength training. So for that I'm grateful. The ones you see at Dick's, etc. don't come with a squat stand or any of the other accessories. That's why they're so cheap.

Hope this answers your question. Maybe someone else can chime in here.

Take care

Mar

That was a great "recap." Thanks.

If I ask my DH for one more thing....well, you know the rest....:p

Thanks Mar!

Hi

I have the same Total Gym (purhased it in late 1999) and I also use it occassionaly. Recently I did use for physcial therapy - it helped tremendously. It eased my back muscles from tensing and I"m now pain free. Of course it also introduced me to strength training and I loved it. It is great for squats and doing the inner/outer thigh workout. Mine came with pulleys also and it's great for stretching. I added a bar to it to intensify my workouts and talk about feeling sore - ouch! I wonder if the Pilates portion of the new Total Gym can be purchased seperately and added to mine - hmmm??

Hope this helps.

Take care,

Iris

Guess what!

After I finished my Slim Series "Tear it up" this morning, I went flipping channels to see what fitness infomercials were running (that is their favorite time to run these ads other than Saturdays & Sundays) and saw the new Total Gym X or something like that. I have really liked the concept of that contraption and when I saw that it could also be used as a Pilates Reformer, it has a pilates video and an LAFD workout video, etc., I went running to my hubby, turned on the TV in our bedroom and told him "I want that! I want that!" :p He actually came out of the bathroom and stood there watching the ad. Then he said to call and get it! We are trying it out for 2 months for free. We can return it if we don't like it. Yeah!!!!

I have been trying to get him to exercise consistently like me. Hey, I get up at 3:15 a.m. every morning, he could get up with me. Its not like he would have to do it alone - He moves around when I get up anyway!}(. While I do my Cathe, etc., he uses the free weights and the treadmill...and now the Total Gym.

However, the thing is EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!! He actually made the call and ordered it. I am glad, too, because he knows the "gist" of it and I did not have to "hide" :7 any information...hehehe!

I am really glad because I want to be able to do all of these exercises that use your core at all times while doing them! Wow! Talk about variety!!!

It will take about 3 weeks to receive it.

I have Cathe, step, Slim Series, Taebo, Yogilates, a few other insignificant vids that complement here and there, my red stability ball, barbell, dumb bells, yoga stuff, a treadmill and now my Total Gym!!!! I am in workout/fitness HEAVEN!!!! :* :p :7 ;-) :D :* :p :7 ;-) :D :* :p :7 ;-) :D http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/lach.gif[/img] http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/lach.gif[/img] http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/lach.gif[/img]

My husband, after 16 years, has FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, did I say FINALLY??? realized, comprehended, "gotten" what exercising and being fit means to me! WOW! Now, THAT is an accomplishment!

Sharing my joy with you...and blessings from our home to yours...Runathon http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/lach.gif[/img]

RE: Guess what!

Hi Runathon - When you get your total gym (I'm assuming it comes with the accessories for working inner thighs) let me know how you hook those up. I never had the patience to figure it out. One thing I noticed is that when switching between dumbells, barbell and pulleys I was really sore from the pulley's - working muscles in different ways and directions. Enjoy and let me know how you like it.

Hey all,
I have a total gym, I guess about 4 years old now. No squat stand, but I push mine up to a wall and squat off the wall. I love using it with the Leaner let tape. I add weights to the total gym and get a GREAT work out. I have gotten a lot more strength in my legs using the total gym vs using a barbell. I think I tend to go much heaver on the total gym, because I do not have to carry the weight on my sholders and if it is too heavy, no harm I just lighten the weight. I love my total gym. They have really great prices on the older ones on ebay.
Take care,
Annette
