Tornado in Indiana?

I have seen this on the news a couple of times now though haven't really had the chance to listen to the report...I know there are some folks from Indiana that post here so I am just hoping that no one was affected by this. If you were, I hope you are safe and sound!

Missy, aren't you in Indiana?

Hey, Wendy! Yes, DH and I actually woke up around two because the winds were so strong around here and it sounded like there was sleet or small hail hitting the window, we sleep with a fan on and DH never wakes up. We didn't know there were tornados until I woke up yesterday morning and saw it on the news. The tornados were over 100 miles from us, but we still got strong storms from the same line that produced the tornados. Very scary. I feel so terrible for the people that lost their lives and loved ones in this storm. There were only warnings of thunderstorms that night before and we haven't been experiencing tornado inducing weather. So sad.;( Thank you for thinkin of us Hoosiers.

Glad to hear you are safe.

That is scarey scarey stuff! The thing about tornadoes is that they are sooo hard, if not impossible to predict!

Yeah, the tornado hit very very close to where my in-laws live. They are okay, fortunately, but others were not so lucky. They were saying that people didn't hear the tornado sirens because they were asleep (at 2am), and that's something I always worry about. We live in a very tornado-prone area and I constantly worry about whether the tornado siren is loud enough to wake me up in the middle of the night. It's really pretty hard to hear during a noisy storm! You're right, tornadoes are really hard to predict. They can give you maybe 5 or 10 minutes of warning when they spot rotation in the clouds, but they have no idea where the tornado is going to strike and what path it's going to take. It's very scary!

Emily, where do your in-laws live? Did they wake up? We live in tornado valley and you cannot hear the tornado sirens on a quiet day, so I know there is no way we could hear it while we were sleeping.

Missy, my in-laws live just west of Evansville. I guess the tornado was east of Evansville. A little too close to home, ya know?

A couple years ago, an F5 tornado touched down just 6 miles from where DH and I live. It completely destroyed a very large manufacturing facility - the employees were all able to reach the storm shelter in time and no lives were lost, but the scene afterward was surreal. An entire manufacturing facility completely leveled in the blink of an eye. The facility is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by corn fields, and today farmers still find pieces of equipment from that facility all over their fields. Hard to believe that 6 miles away, our neighborhood was unscathed.

I am both awed and scared by tornadoes. I'd love to see one (from afar!), but I get so nervous anytime a severe thunderstorm rolls through.

I was in the middle of a tornado once, when I was 8, and it has left me completely in awe of mother nature and God's power. I peed my pants, seriously, and from the basement it sounded like the house was going to be torn away. Hail ruined our cars and the tops of our trees were shredded, our satelite dish (back in the day when there were the huge ones) had something thrown through it that left a gigantic hole. The tornado touched down not even 50 feet from our house and landed in a cornfield. Ever since then, I take warnings very seriously, and my kids know exactly what to do in case of one. Well, maybe not Mariah, she is sorta in her own hormonal preteen world these days :+ Very scary indeed.

My kids have both seen one when my DH took DD to practice once. They both wanted to get a closer look and were trying to run out of the gas station they were hiding in so they could see it. DH was freaked! Luckily they were safe. They were able to see the damage that was done on the news that evening, so they don't think that it is cute anymore. I have such great respect for those storms and will gladly stay out of their way!

Thanks for the concern, Wendy! We are somewhat close to Evansville, but we were not in the path of the tornado...Thank God!! We have some friends from Evansville, but they were safe. And, the mall I love to shop at was salvaged so I am happy about that! However, I feel very badly for the people who were killed...22 I think. I read a story about an 8 month pregnant woman, her young child, and husband were killed. How sad....and in November...who would have thought or even worried about a tornado???

That is exactly what I though! I was shocked when I heard the news; the weather has been steady. I am so happy that you were safe, too.
