Top 10 Movies of 2000

Lex411

Cathlete
I usually, for some odd reason, send movie reviews and stuff like that to my friends and family via email. At the end of the year, I like to look through a list of what was released during the year and put together my very own TOP 10 List. So I figured, why not share that here and see what the rest of you think. What were YOUR favorite movies of the year and why?

Top 10 of 2000

10. Meet the Parents (I just about peed myself at this one)
9. Magnolia (really odd but a year later it's still with me)
8. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (gorgeous, amazing, perfect)
7. Nurse Betty (Renee and Morgan were fab, this film surprised me)
6. Gladiator (who wouldn't want to watch Russell roll around in a skirt for 2 hours, I ask you?)
5. Chicken Run the Great Escape jokes alone had me laughing till I cried)
4. Unbreakable (really misunderstood, interesting, truly unique film)
3. X-Men (I'm not familiar with the comics, but this one had me feeling like a kid watching Star Wars again. Saw it twice)
2. Legend of Drunken Master (not really new, so this is cheating, but this is the best martial arts film of all time, I think, and justa damn good movie all around.)
1. Charlie's Angels (I had to give this one the #1 spot, this was so much fun, so exciting and silly and fun, I'm getting this on DVD for repeat viewing asap. Will be great for watching while running on the treadmill.)

It was a tough field to select from, but that's my top picks. There were about 10 others I narrowed it down from, too.

How about you guys?

Lex:
I usually don't even REMEMBER what movies I've seen in a given year (getting senile in my 40's, I guess), but I have to admit that the one that really floored me last year was American Beauty. I thought it was incredible, really hit me deep.

As far as some of the movies you mentioned on your list...

1. I haven't seen Gladiator yet...but can't wait as I've heard how juicy Russell Crowe looks in it!
2. I enjoyed Meet the Parents also....very funny.
3. Magnolia...GREAT movie. It really wasn't out that long in the movie theaters, so ended up watching this on a Pay-per-view but was really impressed with it.
4. Did see Charlie's Angels....thought it was "cute". I tend to be into more "drama" movies.

Now, if you ask me what my favorite movie of all time is....hands down, no question about it, didn't even have to think twice here...."Fried Green Tomatoes". LOVE LOVE LOVE that movie!!!

Enough said...

Terri

Thanks for your list - I'm going in for knee surgery on Monday and will check these out while sofa-bound - knee will be immobilized for six weeks :-(, but this will help.

I don't think I got out to see ten movies this year, but I did see Chicken Run and loved that one! I also hear that one about the dog shows is hysterical - can't wait for that one to come out on video.

Cheers!

Good Luck Colia!

We'll be thinking of you. You could PROBABLY work up a sweat just watching Cathe VIDS!!! Hope you recovery very quickly. Keep in touch with us all. Your-Friend-In-Fitness, DebbieH :)

Just an FYI, American Beauty came out in 1999, not 2000. You can see a list of all the movies released by year, with dates and fun pictures and stuff, at www.movieweb.com I love that site.

I loved AB too, that was one of THE most amazing years for movies (1999) that I have seen in a long time. There was 6th Sense, American Beauty, Three Kings...and I know there were a handful of others, like the Matrix, all out in the same year. This year wasn't as impressive to me, but a lot of fun ones.

I've actually never seen Fried Green Maters, it always looked like a chick flick, and I tend to be more tomboyish in my movie taste. I like action, martial arts, scarey movies, gore and even hot sex! Does that make me shallow?! ;)

Best in Show (dogshow movie by Chris Guest, who I LOVE) was cute but nowhere near as funny as his last outing, Waiting For Guffman. If you haven't seen that one, rent that instead. Best In Show is ok, has some laughs and the same great cast in both movies, but some of the brutal reality in Show is just a little too brutal. You want to go and rescue all the poor pups!

And I wish you all the best luck and good karma on your surgery. Give yourself plenty of TLC and time to heal afterwards. Make your friends and family wait on you hand and foot and totally spoil you!

Hi Lex,
I do not think I get out as much as you.
I would have to put Gladiator on the List, Best in Show too.
I was disappointed with Magnolia. I had high hopes as I really, really loved Boogie Nights.
Hmmm.... lets see now. I still have to see Meet the Parents, Charlie's Angels and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I want to see all of them.
I like Traffic, but probably not as much as I liked Steven Soderbergh's Out of Sight and The limey. Traffic was flawed (entertaining though)
Guess I will have to get out to more movies next year (I am sure that is what The Motion Picture Academy thinks too)
What am I missing?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-10-01 AT 09:33PM (Est)[p]Good luck to you on your upcoming knee surgery (from a veteran of four -- two of which were in 2000). It is possible to emerge from this stronger and better than ever. I'm living proof! While I'm not at 100% on the lower body, I will be soon. It just takes patience and hard work.

The most important thing: listen to your doctor and your physical therapist (and DO insist on physical therapy). Do not try to proceed at a rate faster than they tell you to. I am just about at three months and am still unable to do step or hi/lo tapes. I will be able to add easy step and low impact at four months, and running and higher impact at six months. For the time being, I am perfectly content doing water running, bicycling and swimming for my cardio. I'm not allowed yet to use any weight for lower body strength work, but that will come in time (at four months).

Have a nice relaxing Sunday, do not drink any alcohol, eat nutrient dense and healthy foods and try to get in a stretch or yoga tape Sunday night to relax you before bedtime. (My tried and true suggestion is Millennium Stretch by candlelight.)

Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you need am empathetic "ear." You'll get through this just fine! :)

a little deficient in my list...

I only saw 3 movies this year in the theater (but I did rent 6 others if that counts :D) My #1 has to be Remember the Titans with Denzel Washington, I thought it was excellent! The soundtrack was great too! My #2-not for sure if this was 2000 or 1999, but I SAW it in 2000-the Green Mile, literally sent chills up my spine, I don't get emotional at the movies as a rule and this one had me almost crying (OK, I WAS PMS'y)#3 would have to be the Patriot, I love historical movies and it doesn't hurt that the fabulous Mel G. is in it! #4 Is the Gladiator...same reasons as number 3 ;-) #4 meet the parents-hilarious
#5 Chicken run, very funny!
now for the best exercise vids of 2000-definitely Cathe's 8 new DVDs and Mindy's Slamming Sports Cardio!

RE: HEY LEX

I am a big movie buff so I guess I will try to make my own list as well, although I can't think of all the movies out now. I have to say I was one of the few who seen Pay It Forward, and it was excellent (I cried like a baby at the end). Meet the Parents was the funniest movie of the year. The Patriot was just awesome. I saw Family Man after Christmas and I thought it was wonderful (I am a sucker for love stories). The Talented Mr. Ripley was like an Alfred Hitchcock movie and was really good. I know I seen more movies, but I guess I am just having a giant brain fart right now.

I did see Magnolia, but the raining frogs had me confused and grossed out-frogs creep me out for some reason. It was good until that. I also saw Unbreakable and I guess I had way too many expectations on that. It was o.k., but not great.

Oh does Castaway count as 2000 movie. I think it is excellent! I sobbed like a baby on that one too.

Take care Lex!
Christine

I totally agree about Traffic. Maybe it just couldn't live up to the endless hype. I hate that. But I LOVED The Limey, that was brilliant. I've seen it 4 times. That speech he gives the DEA guy in his office, that comes out of nowhere and has nothing to do with anything..."bide your time, that's what prison teaches you, bide your time..." totally cracked me up. Terence Stamp should have been nominated for an Oscar and I think Soderbergh should have been too.

Did you like Sex,Lies and Videotape? I adore that movie. When you get past the lurid sex stuff, there are some very interesting characters and stories going on.

RE: a little deficient in my list...

Oh man, The Green Mile had be absolutely balling like an idiot at the end, but that movie pissed me off. I hated it when it was over. It had no feeling of hope or positive energy when it was over. It was like 2 hours of cool movie (and I think David Morse, that BIIIIG prison guard, is soooooo yummy!) and then 30 minutes of rip your guts out, and then...Bye! At least with Shawshank, there was that wonderful ending that left you with a feeling of hope. I don't expect happily ever after, but man, I was bummed out all night after that. If I could just watch it for the first 2 hours, I'd say it was brilliant.

Just had to add my two cents worth:

Loved:

Proof of Life - great acting, good story, and believable ending
Gladiator - again great acting and story
Family Man - Good Christmas Story - I too love that type of
of movie

Not exactly hated but wished I saved my money:

Charlies Angels and
Unbreakable

Can not wait too see:

Finding Forrester
Traffic

Lex: I LOVED "Sex Lies and Videotapes"...but that could be because I love James Spader. He's very sexy in a low-key way....

Terri

Not to be a downer here, but don't get your hopes up for Traffic....my husband and I saw it last weekend and were fairly disappointed. The acting was incredible but I found the movie very "disjointed".

JMHO

Love the movies!

I had to get my License renewed at my local AAA headquarters yesterday and they also sell Cinema Cash...had to stock up;-).

I just love going to the movies. We have a smaller movie house within walking distance to the house and I generally go to most of the movies I see..by myself;-). You know..those "girly" ones LOL.

Anyway, the ones that stand out in my mind this year...if I can remember:

Charles Angels...didn't think this would be anything buy mildly entertaining...loved it. I loved the filming style, loved the comedy, loved the action and just loved the spoof/remake of a show I watched in the 70's! It was a fun movie.

I'm going blank now and can't think of any real standouts but Tom Hanks was great in Castaway and I really hope Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon makes it to my area...just for the music! So I am dying to ad that to my list.

What Women Want with Mel was mildly entertaining..sort of had an old movie feel to it with the dance segment and how the comedy was done.
And the Grinch was interesting from a young baby boomer who grew up watching it. I still prefer the original, but I love how they can try to transform a cartoon into real people stuff.

I'll name a couple all time favorites since there doens't seem to me any real standouts for me.

The Piano...that movie just left me breathless...LOVED it! It would be hard to replace that with a number one.

Pulp Fiction..very hip, just loved that one too and I don't even like violent movies. Hey..these both had Harvey Keitel in them...could be a pattern there;-)...I just love the edge he puts on things...he moves we without even speaking.

RE: How could I forget!

My favorite movie of 2000 was Gladiator. I had a wonderful dream with Russell Crowe, by the way he is my boyfriend, not Meg Ryan's, and it hit me when I woke up this morning. How could I possibly forget that one. So add Gladiator to my list.
Take Care!

RE: a little deficient in my list...

Hi Lex,
I don't know the guy's name, but one of those prison guards (the really tall one with very short hair) makes me melt. In the beginning of the movie, Tom Hanks tells this guy that their newest prisoner (Coffee) makes you look little. Is that David Morse? If so, yummy is a good way of describing him. I normally don't like really tall guys but he was gorgeous.

Oh well, enough lusting for the day!

Lisa

Hey Nancy!

Love your modified signature! We are finally getting some cooler weather & rain. Last week I was in shorts! I've turned into a wimpy bike rider & asked my husband to get my wind trainer back from his buddy.

I also go to the movies by myself, usually for what DH calls chick flicks. He really avoids the worst type of chick flick, the frock flick (period costumes). I've got to get him into Crouching Tiger without him realizing it's in Mandarin. It's showing at the megaplexes here, not just the art houses.

Everyone over 35 should see Dr. T & the Women. It's a sleeper. The Weekend is worth every cent for the upstate New York setting. Count on Me is another to search out. Billy Eliot deserves the attention it is getting too!

Debra

Hey Lex!

That speech was brilliant! Definitely my favorite part (of an excellent) movie. Yes, it had me cracking up too. I agree, Terence Stamp should have one the oscar (over Kevin "Pay it Forward aka I make bad choices" Spacey.
Now, I must say... were you separated at birth from my husband?
Your love of hockey and The Legend of Drunken Master has me wondering. Now, where do you stand on Spinal Tap?
