Toe weghts?.... WD

Your comment on the hard core rotation thread check-in on 3/15 interested me. You mentioned using 'toe weights' on your shoes because you rarely feel anything with abdominal exercises. In terms of DOMS for my abs, I don't either. Toe weights are unfamiliar to me; can you elaborate? thank you in advance

Hi Judy,
I got mine from www.fwonline.com they are 1 lb each and run$16.99. www.jolieweights.com has the pair I have and a pair that are 2 lbs each. They are a little higher there. They are easy to put on. they have a velcro piece that wraps around your lower shoe laces and eyelets at the top that your shoe strings run through when you tie them. They also have a handy little hidden velcro pocket on the back that you can put money or a key in if you are out walking or running in them. I use them on the leg conditioning drills from Kick Max as well. I even left them on when I did the pikes yesterday. I wasn't sure how it would work out but it was fine.

I would advise against using weights on ankles or feet when walking or running, as it can put a lot of nasty torque on the knee. If you do a search on this (except at places that SELL ankle or foot weights), you'll see that many authorities advise against it.

Judy: Another way of adding resistance to some ab exercises is to use a medicine ball (hold between your knees when doing reverse crunces, in your hands when doing regular crunches, etc.)

Thanks for the info Katherine. I will check it out. I tried them with Lowmax and felt tenderness in my knees so I haven't done that again. You can also use ankle weights for ab work as well. I just found the shoe weights handy and not quite so cumbersome.

I wanted a pair of those little round soft weights you used to see in the VERY OLD firm workouts, and I had to look long and hard to find a pair. Apparently they are quite outdated. Here is a picture of them:

Those ones are .5 pound each but I found some that are 1 pound.

I wanted them as a substitute or 24.95 platemates... just a one pound or so increment to put on the ends of my barbel/dumb bells when I need a little more weight. I have found lots of uses for these. Too bad they are so outdated.

Oh yeah, that's what I do--I did Cathe's ab hits w/a med ball & it was awesome. My abs were sore for two days after--I love that feeling!

I can't imagine putting weights on my toes--how do your poor little toes handle the weights? :)

Hello,

I just wanted to mention that you migh want to be be careful with ankle or any weights on the legs when doing abs, as that usually is a sign that the hip flexiors are kicking in and your abs aren't working as hard as they should/could. It depends on the ab exercise of course, but the main althetic abs exercises, if your using your legs, your letting your abs get away with not carrying all the weight they should, and I mean by using, if you are putting weight on your legs and it's actually feels like it's doing something your using your hip flexors some with your ab work. Now if your doing hammer crunches, or double leg extentions then if your very careful and controled you can force your abs to work harder with the weights, but even those, can kick in those hip flexors in a heart beat, with very little help from you. Your abs will still get a workout and feel worked, as things are all tied together, but it's just not as extreame as it could be, I guess you'd say. If your happy with the results, then that might be the way for you, but if your trying to get this to get harder tighter abs, next time try to put your legs in a more nutural position, for some it may be further away from the body others it might be closer as it depends on where you put your feet know as to how to correct it so try it both ways. And when you do your abs pull them in like your trying to hook your belly button on your spine, and then do the exercise while squeezing the abs even more and forcing them to pull your weight up inch by inch, this will help keep the hip flexor out of the ab work. And should make the abs actually do all the work, and not share with their friends the hip flexors.

Good luck and do be careful and always enjoy your workouts,

Kit

Thank you Kit for the tips! I will incorporate them into my ab sessions.

Do you think it is safe to use an #8 weight as a substitute for the med ball. I notice the modifiers in IS do NOT put the weight between their knees when Cathe puts the med ball between her knees.

I'll remember that for sure cause that's really cute :7

Maybe you could place the dumbbell between your feet (at the arches). I find that doable.

Would an ankle weight not achieve the desired effect but also prevent injury to the delicate foot area with its multiplicity of bones and ligaments?

Clare

I have read that you pull your abs in like you were creating a vacuum but not holding your breath. Also, I have used a dumbell between my knees instead of a medicine ball but cross my feet at the ankles so it does not slip. Now, I would not recommend this for those medicine ball rocket shoots, you might end up with it in your face;-) Maximus the shoe weights actually rest on your shoe laces not really the toes.

hi Judy,

Yes it's fine to subsitue an 8 pound weight, just be careful with the knees one of the reason you don't put the weight there, is it's made of metal if you're using a good old dumbbell. As well as it's hard on the knees, you could wrap it up into foam cusion, I have them where I work for the people who have a hard time griping a weight for whatever reason, or want to use the weight for a part of the body that can't grip it like your hands can. So you may want to think about doing that, as to hold the weight there with your knees you usually have to squeeze lightly and that doesn't feel so good with a hard metal weight. And also the ball is wide enough it activates the thigh muscles, so even just holding it, your doing something. If you use the weight follow the modifers, and if there isn't a modification, make sure to allow your leg to feel the weight, but support it with your hand. Basically make your hand like a buffer, you hand should go along with the legs or motion, but it shouldn't play a part in the motion. It's just taking a joy ride.

I hope this helps and good luck.

I also remember these balls you could put weight in, they reminded me of the balls you could put a hamster in and it could run around in it's ball on the floor. Anyway you'd put the weight in a certain spot depending on how much it weighed and then you'd blow up the ball around the weight, and you'd have a weighted ball. I haven't see them for a few years so I don't know if they are available or not anymore, I use to see them all the time when I lived in California, but now that I'm on the other side of the US, I don't see half of the fitness toys I use to get to play with. But I hope I gave you some ideas and hopefully helped with your workout.

Kit

Diane Sue, I totally agree, my medicine ball is 10 lbs and I don't want that falling on my face.... to each his own, someone asked you about toe weights and you answered lol ... I think toe weights would be great and I may just order some soon.... they may not be for everyone, but to those who want them go for it.... Rhonda
