Toe Arthritis?

Hi all

This may sound wierd... but, I think my big toe has arthritis sometimes as it is sore when I bend it. Does anyone else experience this and if so have you found any relief? Sure makes lunges a little uncomfortable at times! Even walking sometimes. Yuck!

Any input is welcome. BTW, this is self diagnosed... maybe it is something else?

Thanks,
Nancy

It could be any number of things, Nancy. I worked for a podiatrist for a long time. A lot of patients did have arthritis, but if the pain continues I'd suggest checking it out with a podiatrist. You never know if there is something going on that you're hurting by repetition or something.
All I remember was that they had arthritis, I don't remember anyone having it in their toe. Seems logical though. (I did the billing for the doc, not anything with actual feet! Don't take my word as truth!! LOL) ;)

I saw a podiatrist a few months ago for exactly what you're describing. It was indeed arthritis and it's very common. He told me that it was irreversible and that I could take antiinflammatories (motrin, etc.) It kind of comes and goes. I know what you mean about the lunges. Sometimes when it's really bothering me I have my chiropractor "adjust" it. I don't know what he does but it works!!

Thanks Lois and Amy. Lois, it does sound like the same thing you have, comes and goes. It has been worse these past 2 days and certain shoes make it worse. Interesting that a chiropracter can help it.. wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks again.

Guess I will be biking and doing floor legs until it goes away. :)

I have the same thing and my podiatrist diagnosed me with an arthritic big toe and had to modify my orthotics to compensate for it. Lunges do hurt sometimes I just have to be careful. With my orthotics I don't have to take my anti-inflammatory anymore. He also talked about surgery to correct mine. You can see the bigness of the joint just by looking at it and also the difference seen between my other big toe and it.

Higher heels also tend to bend the toe wrong and hurt if worn too long. I feel your pain.:(

Have a great painfree day!!:7

Yes! I have it too. Maybe it's an affliction of people named Nancy. :+

I have the same pain when I bend my toes, and lunges are the worst. My doc told me to see a podiatrist, and the podiatrist said definitely arthritis. He also said that arthritis of the feet is very common because there are so many little bones in the feet that you can get arthritis there even when you don't have it anywhere else in your body, and it's usually the first place it shows up!

For me, it really helps to wear sneakers to do lunges, instead of doing them barefoot, as I used to do.

I haven't purchased any of the books that tell you what to do for arthritis. I hear there are special diets you can follow that help. So far, it's just my feet and my lower back so I haven't bothered too much about it. If I ever have arthritis in my hands, though, I'm sure I'll start to research the issue.
