To Those that Follow BFFM.....

Cathlete
I have a quick question as I am just starting the chapter on protein (oh...the subject that has been beaten to death!!!).

To me (and tell me if I am wrong), Tom seems to be against protein supplements (shakes and powders) and advocates strongly for people to get their protein from foods and NOT from a supplement.

Am I understanding this correctly? Just this morning I purchased a whey "isolated" protein from GNC to be used as a recovery drink. Now I am not so sure that I should keep it and perhaps I should just focus on getting protein from the real source.

**Of course I know that getting it from the source is probably always IDEAL...but I am wondering if I should stick to this mantra completely***

I guess I am just looking for some clarification from those that follow this program religiously (which I am really trying hard to do!!!)

Thank you!!!

Rose,
I can't say I am following BFFM religiously, but I do use it to inform my nutrition and exercise practices. After skimming through the protein chapter, this stood out to me:

"Whether it's a whole protein food or a protein supplement is up to you, but you should always emphasize whole foods first and foremost."

And, under the list of complete proteins to include in every meal:

chicken breast
turkey breast
fish
shellfish
eggs (mostly whites
lean red meats
nonfat or lowfat dairy
milk, egg, or whey-based protein powders

So, I think your ideas are right on board with what Venuto advocates. I interpret it as this: If you try and get your protein from real food sources most of the time, it is OK to supplement with recovery drinks as well - just less often.

Cathy :)

I believe what he is advocating is that your first choice is protein in its natural state - chicken, fish, etc. If you find yourself unable to eat in this fashion (due to travel, work, time, etc.), protein powders are acceptable.

I would say you are fine to use it as you have described as long as that isn't your primary source of protein throughout the day.

Hope that helps.

Mo:)
