TLT forum- What do you think?

I was just lurking on the TLT forum, Tracy Long Training forum for those who don't know, and I like it and I'm not sure about some things. The staff seems to be really responsive and quick too! I like that a lot. But, I was on the nutrition one where it seemed like they are pushing a lot of products. I'm not sure I like that so much. I always question when I'm getting advice from someone who is in the position of benefiting financially if I purchase some product from them, based purely on the advice they just gave. What do you all think?

I agree with you and I wouldn't buy the products either. Everyone is trying to get rich in the diet and nutrition industry. I get my advice from local people with real credentials: my doctor, and a "real" registered dietician, not one of those generic "nutritionists". Anyone can hang a shingle on their door and call themselves a nutritionist. Just my .02.

I think it's like any other message board. Read what you want to and don't read what you don't want to. That's what I do here, there, and at VF. It's not like you have to read every post or respond to it, or even accept what's written there. Most of the posts on here I never even open for one reason or another. People are always going to have opinions and nutrition is a hot topic for sure, but it's not like you don't have a choice or you can't educate yourself. It's Tracie's site and she follows the programs they talk about on there, so it's her choice to have the discussions on her site but she certainly isn't forcing anyone to read them or agree with them or buy the products. Just like this is Cathe's site and she allows certain discussions on here that may offend people, but it's not like you are forced to read them or participate in them. I've seen plenty of discussions on VF about topics on here and everytime it happens there are a core group of people who run over there and post about it, like they have to defend the home front or something. Yet posts about other forums show up here and no one seems to think it's inappropriate. It works both ways. Either you live and let live or you make up your own mind at each forum about what you will or won't read, and what you will or won't accept or believe. People are entitled to discuss whatever they want as long as they are following the guidelines of that particular forum, IMHO.

Carol,

I agree with you 100%. My comments were meant to be generic and not directed at any one forum or another. I am simply referring to the onslaught of information about diet and nutrition and I feel people should be careful to get help and advice from credentialed professionals. I'm sorry if anything I said was construed as an attack on another forum.;) :)

I don't mind when people push their own product on their own site. Afterall, if they truly believe in it and want to be a success, that is what they ought to do. But it becomes bothersome to me when that is the *only* solution that is offered to an inquiry or the *only* possible option that they see or they make it a core element of the exercise program. In that case, it seems more like a marketing push than a real solution.

Oh Michele I hope I didn't offend you or anyone!! My comments were generic as well because I see so much cross-posting and it never turns into anything good.

As for nutrition, I simply don't read the posts because I prefer to read things for myself and get my education "offline" so to speak. I have a lot of respect for Tracie and if she wants to follow this program that's all fine and well, but I would need more information before I bought supplements from anyone - even locally. I'm such a skeptic I don't even take vitamins - LOL!!

Hi Carol!

I never heard of Tracie Long until recently from another thread on this forum. I just registered on Tracies' forum the other day and I plan to order her DVD's--ALL OF THEM!! I think they look great. I was cracking up, though. I recognized most of the ID's from the Cathe forum. I felt confused for a minute about where I was--LOL!

Michele :)

I must say, it's nice to be on a forum where the instructor is so active (not only Tracie, but Susan and other TLT instructors as well).

I agree with the scepticism on nutritional advice. I take it with a grain of salt, figure I might find something useful, and if not, discount it. And it's not going to convince me to buy any of their nutritional supplements (on the one hand, they are probably selling them because they believe they are effective, on the other hand, there is quite a tidy profit to be made from nutritional supplements, so there may be some sales push beyond that). The woman doling out nutritional advice doesn't state her qualifications (I haven't seen them).

It does seem like some people are just lapping up anything the "nutritionist" is saying.

Hi Michelle,

I ordered all four yesterday - they look wonderful!! I agree the online fitness community is very small indeed!! It's like we all "know" each other - LOL!!

Kathryn, I agree they do seem to hang on her every word. I stopped reading the posts after a while on the old site because it annoyed me - LOL! Now to save myself grief I decided not to read them on the new site. I respect Tracie and the others a lot and I'm glad they've had such success with the supplements, but that sort of thing just isn't for me. To each his own, right?

Vitamins and such. Buy at Costco for the best deals. I think all that is just to make more money also. I usually ignore that. I have read enough to know what is good for me and nothing is going to make me lose any fat besides diet and exercise.
And what about the exercise experts who say all one needs is 20 mins three times a week. Oh sure, that really works!

I agree that there are a lot of people trying to sell you something and claim that their product is the cure-all for everything that could possibly be wrong with you; if there is nothing wrong, they convince you there is.

However, Marti Chitwood is a RD, CNN, who has written articles for several medical magazines. I have worked with her on an immune system of mine and found her to quite thorough. She gets blood tests, (from your doctor or lab), saliva, which is sent to a lab in California, and other pertinent information as she works along with your own doctors. She is one of the most the kindest, most gentle, and knowledgable person one could meet.

I don't think Tracie is pushing her program, she just gives you the opportunity to work with her nutritionalist (who happens to have her office in Tracie's gym)if you want to.
I thought of it as an opportunity to work with a "famous person" as opposed to someone who just took a 2-week course on how to sell vitamins. :)

Thanks, Wanda,

That's good to know. May I ask--what does CNN stand for? All I can think of is "Certified Nephrology Nurse". I swear, people put so many titles after their names anymore---I have no idea what it means half the time--LOL!

Michele

Ooos, I meant CCN = certified clinical nutritionalist
So Marti is a Registered dietician, Certified clinical nutritionalist.
Hope this helps. :)

I know what you mean by the titles. I just graduated to get a "title" but can't use it after my name because it also stands for something else. Only when I get the "C" certified, will I be able to use it. Grrr. }(

I must admit I love to stir up a little debate.LOL It's always interesting to hear what others have to say on the subject. And, Wanda your adding in personal experience with the nutritionist makes it all the more interesting. I guess simply there are a lot of people out there who use supplements, I don't. So, when I hear people pushing them it rubs me the wrong way. Although, I of course should recognize there are many people out there that have found supplements to be helpful.
Heather

I can understand your leeriness of supplements. I've been there, done that. The colloidal silver phase; supposedly to help build up the immune system (which also claimed it cures rashes and actually CAUSED me to have the worse rash in my ENTIRE life!!LOL), the Olive leaf phase, and the Cats'Claw...and yadda yadda.
I even have friends who sell supplements and I know how much training they have. Yet, for some people it will work, or they think it works. That is why I never, ever believe testimonials. People can say anything. And..what works for one person may not work for someone else. No two people are exactly alike unless you are identical twins. LOL When someone says this supplement will cure everything...RUN. LOL

A good nutritionalist, on the other hand, is one who is schooled and not only works with the medical field, but will work with the entire spectrum to help heal your whole body with a program that is for you and not a one size fits all.
Eating the right food for your body is the biggest percentage of being in shape; albeit the hardest part. Personally,it is the most difficult thing for me to totally give up all the white stuff...as in salt.
Ah...another subject.:)

I'm actually working on a rotation which will incorporate all her TLP's, the four new ones, and the BOSU workouts I have. I plan not to lift anything heavier than a medicine ball for three solid weeks, and think of the all the core training that will give me!! LOL!
