Tired during period?

Is it normal to be tired during the 1st day of your period? I'm just so sleepy- I could take 4 naps!

Thanks! (I'm 26)

I'm usually so tired for about 4 days that I'm having trouble getting out of bed at my usual time (6AM). And yes, I tend to take a quick nap mid afternoon. It starts the day before my period starts.

My main annoyance TTOM is headaches. I recently had a menstrual headache that persisted for several hours. I don't know if it resulted from being tired or not. I try to increase water intake when symptoms persist. But I wonder if the tiredness and headaches are from poor PMS food choices. For example the sugar-low that follows after a sugar-high. That can make me very tired feeling and craving more sugar until I realize the cycle and force myself to NOT eat more sugar.

I actually get a increase in energy just the day before. It is always the second day of my period that makes me feel like an invalid. I should have a handicap sticker to use on my car just for that day! LOL

I always feel more tired around TTOM. That would be this week, actually, and I am feeling really sluggish. It usually lasts several days for me. It's a major bummer, but I just try to push through it.

yes I feel terrible during those days...especially very sleepy, just cant wake up have to force myself to do it, also i have a lot of pain in my abdomen and legs, and i canot exercise for at leadt 4-5 days, do u guys have any suggestions on wht type of exercise i could do, im really scared to do any kind of exercise for the fear of increased pain, i would like to no wht the others r doin. thanks.

Neha,

When you say you have a lot of pain in your abdomen and legs, do you mean pain from menstrual cramps? If so, then the best thing you can do is exercise, to help the uterus relax and relieve the cramps. Some light/moderate cardio, or even weight training could help to relieve the cramps. When I was in middle school and used to get really horrible menstrual cramps, the school nurses would always tell me to do some crunches (I used to think those nurses were nuts!). :p But it really did help bring some relief. Also, resting a hot water bottle or heating pad over the lower abdomen can help loosen things up too.

If your pain is not caused by menstrual cramps, then I don't have an suggestions, other than maybe you should see your doctor.

Yes,I feel a difference in my body and sensations during the period. I usually have headaches, my legs are sore and I have the abdomen swollen too.

yes i do mean a lot of menstrual cramps, i no i should c a doc, but just cant to do it, i have heard tht some moves from pilates and yoga r not safe to do during periods, do u think doin some cardio and weights will help, im really scared to try anything bcoz f the pain. i like the idea of the warm bottle, i will try next time. thanks so much.

Neha - don't be afraid to exercise during your period. It will help with the cramps. There are indeed some Yoga and Pilates moves you should avoid during your period - basically anything where you are inverted (ie, Downward Dog). But you should be okay with most cardio and weights workouts. It will help with the pain - give it a try. :)

wow, this is really great, i will definitely try to exercise, coz i end up not exercising for almost a week, thn i dont feel so good, bcoz i luv to exercise, i will defi try the next time. thank u soooooooo very much.

Yes, I think it's pretty normal to be tired before your period. I get really tired about 5 days before- and it lasts 2 or 3 days. It can be really frustrating, but I try to honor my body and give it what it's telling me it needs. I take a nap, or just lay around reading if I feel I need to. Exercising helps, but sometimes I just don't feel up to it.

Take care!

I'm usually tired the week before I have that horrible week. Today I was doing slow and heavy and it my body felt so exhausted through it. My energy level falls big time the week before. Bit I still have to exercise, I just have to push through my tiredness and do it.

Now there are times the tiredness wins over the exercise. Like today I took an hour nap because I was so tired. So I'm with you.

I have always struggled with being very tired during TOM and having so much pain I could not work out through it. I would normally do a really hard MIC like cardio on day one since I knew that may be all I could get in that week. I could usually handle weight work though.

Due to all my TOM problems, I have just had a hysterectomy and am home recovering now. I do recommend a heating pad, that worked great for me. I would actually sleep with it on my abdomen.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

I get insomnia for a night or two before I get my period. Therefore, I'm tired just from that. Before I had endometrial ablation done, I was bleeding so heavily and was so anemic that I was absolutely wiped during TTOM and the rest of the month as well. It didn't get rid of the insomnia, though. x(
