tipping the owner

This has probably been asked and answered in the past, but if the owner of the salon cuts your hair, do you tip them too, or no?

Thanks!

Hi Susan,
This has been brought up a few times in the past.. There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to the beauty industry and the salon world..
There are many situations in the salon.. some owners give themselves a salary (often modest) and then put every extra penny into the salon to make it grow.. MANY salons struggle to get by for years before they accomplish any kinds of real profits.
Many salons have self employed stylists, meaning they are most likely in the same situation as the owner: working for themselves with the same costs (only the owner actually has to pay the electricity, gas, receptionists, retail, equiptment and any other ammenities that the stylists do not contribute for.
I have known salon owners that drive hoop d's so that they can help their stylists get ahead and make their business grow.
A lot of people seem to think that beauty professionals are rollin in the dough, but we're not ;)
We actually have probably one of the most inconsistant careers in the world. Never knowing if we're going to make money when we go in to work.. if we have a couple clients that do not show up or cancel on us.. we don't get paid for it.
But we're all equal in the salon, we have the same bills and many of us make the same money whether we're the owner, employee or independent.
So... I'd say probably tip the owner, even if it's modest. Honestly :::blush::: we take it a little perosnal if we don't get tips. I have to say that many stylist have gotten snobby about it, mostly because if we get paychecks every week (or bi-weekly for many in the industry) then (cash) tips help us get thorugh the week (gas, lunch etc), since many paychecks are inconsistent.
PLUS for stylists that are employes's, usually make vary modest pay with salons the first several years (this is especially true for chains).
I personally understand that European people's do not tip much and do not always expect it from students or those that i know are tight on money either.. when I was a teen I didn't even KNOW that it was customary to tip! I felt awful when I found out here Im getting my roots and hightlights done every 4 weeks with a color and I felt like a heel. Oh well, it happens.
How on earth are we supossed to keep track of everyone we have to tip and who not to these days? Do we tip our mechanices? A lot of coffee shops have tip jars in them now.. I go in everyweek and get a to-go contianer of Domincan slop and I still haven't figured out if Im supposed to tip the girl that helps me..
I think if you're tight budget it's good to drop the hint so that no one feels offended, like you didn't like what they did to your hair.. unless you didn't hehe ;)
Anyways, putting my fat opinion in as this is something I know a lot about, I like to try to clear up any misconceptions and grievances that I know are big in the fahsion/beauty industry..
Sorry for ranting :p

I didn't think salon owners are rolling in the dough. Believe me, there's a lot of people thinking teachers are rolling in it too - haha!

Anyway, I just didn't want to make a faux pas either way. Now, what do you say about percentages? 15%?

Thanks!

Susan L.G.

I have been having my hair cut, colored etc by the owner of a salon for about 10 years and I always tip her exactly what I would tip anyone else.

Deb:)

Thank you for this thread! I never knew what to do! Now I will continue to tip her 20 percent since she doesn't charge me as much now that she just takes a few clients!

As for the big bucks of stylists and teachers? Heck, you all are rolling in it right there next to we nurses!!!!(But it ain't money we're rolling in!)

Tip what you can if you can. My friend is a salon owner and with the economy going down the toilet luxury items, such as salon visits, are the first things to suffer and she is said she is quite happy to keep her customers, whether they can afford to tip or not. Quite frankly, with what stylists tend to charge I could understand why someone might not opt to tip. I'm not rolling in the money either!

Oh dear no! With what I pay for my colorist and sylist, I would leave with an empty wallet if I worried about tipping the owner too. Guess it would be different if the owner did my hair, then yes, I would tip him or her.

I have been getting my hair done by the owner of my salon for 7 years and I never tip her. She charges a fair price for doing my hair and I figure if she needed more she would just raise the prices (which she has done). I always get her a grate

I am exhausted by the EVERY expanding list of people who need a tip. I have never understood how it got to be everyone else's problem that people who took service jobs don't make as much money for providing the services as they think they should.

Okay off soapbox now...

KIM

I paid $65 for the cut, which was the same as the employee that cut my hair before, and gave her a $10 tip.

Well, when a stylist - who gets paid small salary plus commission does it, I tip 20 percent....the owner, doesn't have to fork over part of her fee like the sylist does (they get half of what it costs generally right? The stylists, I mean)....so I didn't tip last time - the owner did my cut and color....now y'all are messin' me up! :(
