Time to come out of lurking - Introduce myself

Time to come out of lurking...been reading this forum regularly for over a month. Very supportive and informative group here. A little about myself, I'm 46, 5'2", 118 lbs. a horse gal (ride dressage) and a cyclist. These 2 passions and boy, is it difficult to spend enough time on each. I've always been pretty active but have been working out regularly to videos for the past year, starting with yoga and moving on to some Karen Voight, Gilad and Tamilee Webb stuff. I'd watch Cathe on FitTV thinking no way could I ever keep up with her on the step, but it sure looked like they were having fun. After reading a bit on this forum, I ordered Basic Step and Fusion DVD. It's great, so of course I had to order the Timesaver and CTX series. I'm enjoying both of these and not finding them a problem to learn. If I can do it, you can too! 'Course I don't look nearly as coordinated as Cathe and crew, but have something to shoot for anyway.

I've had some slight knee problems in the past so I don't work with the risers on the step, just the top. At first I had funny sensations in the knee area, kind of like they were tired, but not painful. I just worked through it and that feeling has completely gone away. I also watch my lunges and squats and strive for good form. At a later time I may add a riser but will wait until I learn the steps better.

My goals are to increase strength in my core area (really helps for dressage and cycling), strengthen my legs (for cycling) and gain muscle definition in my not so firm thighs. Amazing that I can ride 100 mile bike rides and still have fat legs  I love the way my arms and abs are starting to look already. The stability work on the ball, I believe, will help in my horseback riding. And yes, I want to look and be strong, don't we all?

Any suggestions for improving in these areas would be appreciated. Thanks for reading. What a nice group of ladies on this forum.

You have to stay in shape. My Grandmother started walking when she was 60. Today she is 97 and we don't know where the hell she is! - Ellen DeGeneres

Welcome Jeanette, now yu just need to post a pic like the rest of us did recently. Some of the other folks (ahem!) will practically twist your arm.

Hi Jeanette! Welcome and glad you came out of lurking! I'm sure you'll find lots of good information and advice here! Sounds like you're already making some good progress and great Cathe choices! CTX is one of my all time favorites - I use parts of it every week and have ever since it came out!

Welcome again! :) :)

Guess I'll have to get out of my comfort zone and figure out how to post a pic. Might have to be an upper body shot. I still have a faint cycling tan from last year, looks funny with my workout shorts. Pretty safe to say you won't see me in a bathing suit in the near future.:p

Hey Jeanette, no worries right. Whenever you're ready post your pic. I was joking 'cause Jes & Marion kept harping on me to post mine. So where do you live and what Cathe workouts do you do? I'm in Texas & I do all of her workouts. I tried her CTX around 2 yrs ago & haven't strayed from her since. Tomorrow I'll get HC. Yeah!

Hi Jeanette, Welcome to the forum. I am going to recommend Muscle Endurance because the leg work (in my opionion) is superior in this workout. It has made a huge difference in the strength of my legs and arse. So much firmer! No saddlebags here! Only thing is, you ned a high step (sold at walmart.com for best price) or the Firms "fanny lifter" box would work. All the leg presses do wonders! I call it the "miracle move". Muscle Endurance also has an excellent ab routine at the end.

Another great one for legs is High Step Training Advanced...again, need the high step but this workout has no ab work.

HTH!

I will work on the pictures, it'll be a challenge I'm sure. I live in northeastern California, Susanville, CA. We've had a tougher winter this year. Lots of frozen snow and fog so not able to get out and cycle as much. I have a trainer for the bike but absolutely detest the thing. Actually, I've noticed the days are getting longer so think I could get a 20 miler (takes a little over an hour) in after work pretty soon, if it warms up. Days have been in the 30's here but it looks like warmer weather is coming our way. My poor horse has been in the corral since before Christmas, sure he'll be glad to get out as soon as I can shovel the snow from around the gates. Think riding will be on hold until this snow melts a bit more.

So far I'm doing a mix and match of Timesaver and CTX. I did the entire upper body split today. Feels sooo good. I did leaner legs (love how someone calls it "meaner legs") on Tuesday. Still working on rotation ideas. I only have BS/BF, CTX and Timesaver but will no doubt be ordering more.

I'm glad to hear CTX is so effective.

I love my hobbies, used to only ride horses, started with basic western, did hunter/jumpers for around 13 years, then went back to western (team penning, cattle work, reining, little bit of cutting, lots of ranch work) and now have returned to dressage (last 5 years). Think I like the dressage because I'm such a control freak. I've got a pretty nice Quarter Horse that's 9 now (wow, where has the time gone?).

About 5 years ago I got into cycling and really got the bug. I have some nice friends that I ride with regularly. We pick events (62 milers and century rides (100 milers) and train together. I live in a fairly mountainous area so we get a lot of climbing work in. I have a lot of endurance but would like to work on the strength. Cycling's fun for me and I feel that's been the key to me staying with it.

Both of these hobbies take some time and I find the horse doesn't get ridden an much as he should.

Torn between two lovers...

I'll have to check out the video clip for Muscle Endurance and High Step Training Advanced. I've wondered how my knees would do with the high step. So far they feel perfect. Thanks for the tips, it's much appreciated.

Hi Netta! Welcome!

My DH loves cycling and he bought me a beautiful new bike two years ago hoping that I would join him, but every time I cycle my knees hurt and my lower back acts up something awful. I've had my seat adjusted by several cycling experts, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I know it would make him SO happy if I would join him, so any tips are appreciated.

I'm usually okay for about 20 miles before the pain starts. But that's just recreational because the cycling never gets me into my cardio target zone because my legs give out before my heart even notices I'm doing anything. So after I'm done cycling with him, I still need to go to the gym to get a real workout. x(

Isn't this a great group? It's great that you're in your forties because we're trying to overtake the thirty-something group. }( }(

Jeannette, welcome! I'm still pretty new, too, and these boards are a great place... someday I will also post my pic. ;-)

Nancy, I was LOL at your comment about your legs giving out before your heart even noticed you were cycling! That is too funny!

Take care,
Marie

Nancy, thanks for the welcome. I've been riding for about 5 years but am not an expert, but do know that my knees will hurt if I try to ride too high of gears. Could be why your legs are spent but not getting the cardio workout you want. Generally cyclists are kind of shooting for the 90 rpm's per minute spin (more or less, everyone's different). You might try to count the times one leg goes around in 15 seconds and then multiply by 4. If your answer (cadence) is below 75 or so, you're probably in too high a gear. Think someone told me once, "If your legs are tired, choose a lower (easier) gear. If you're breathing too hard, pick a higher (harder) gear." Hills will help for the cardio. I used to sound like a freight train when going uphill. I know I'm in too high of a gear if I can hear myself breathing heavily. I have noticed some soreness in the lower back when I push too hard too soon. Just for reference, my seat and handlebars are nearly on the same level. None of that bending waaaay over stuff for me. I like going fast but want to be comfortable too. Hope this helps.

I like being in my 40's, have had the most fun of my life! I ride (bikes) with lots of 40, 50, 60 and some 70 year olds too. Age is only in our minds! :7

Netta,
Excellent tips! Thanks so much! I'm going to try riding again in the spring (not so far off now) keeping what you've said in mind.

Marie, thanks for appreciating my humor!
