Time of Day to Exercise

Hi Cathe,
What time of day is it best to exercise? Does it really matter? I work out early afternoon, and I'm wondering if it would be more beneficial to work out first thing in the morning. Thanks.

Great article! Although it forgot to mention the fourth major advantage for exercising in the morning: COMMITMENT

It's the first to check off your daily "To Do" list. That way, you get the satisfaction knowing that you did your workout first and every other task is secondary. If you did your workout later in the day, there's more of a chance other things will interfere w/ your exercise routine. Studies have shown that morning exercisers are more consistent w/ their fitness routine.

i would say first thing in the morning on an empty stomache........but its always better to workout when it works for you!

Is the article only referring to cardio? I wouldn't think doing heavy weights on an empty stomach would be a good idea?

Personally, I find if I do cardio on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, I feel really tired for the rest of the day. I have read that if your blood sugar gets too low (from the overnight fast plus exercise) it is very difficult to stabilize blood sugar for the rest of the day. So, what works for some people may not work for others.

I enjoy cardio early evening when I get home from work (before I allow myself to sit down!)

I've read in Muscle Magazine that to lose body fat, you must be strategic about carbs. The mag suggested eating them only when necessary: after cardio workouts, before and after weight workouts. I've been working out in the morning for 25 years. I try to incorporate these suggestions by using a protein shake since I cannot tolerate anything heavy on my stomach before my morning workouts.

I just read, in either Fitness or Shape magazine, that when you exercise in the early afternoon your Perceived Rate of Exertion is at its lowest and that your metabolism is very high. But I would have to agree with the other posters, whatever time works best for you is the best time to exercise. You're more likely to stick with it, and give it your all right from the beginning.
