The dr. just informed me I have low thyroid. I know nothing about it. What does it do for my body? Should I be concerned? How does working out affect it, or how does it affect working out?
Hi,
The thyroid gland is in the neck just in front of the windpipe (trachea). The thyroid gland gives out just the right amount of thyroid hormone daily to regulate the rate at which the cells in your body work. If it produces too much or too little hormone you can feel ill. Low thyroid or hypothyroidism as it is commonly known is when the thyroid produces too little hormone.
Signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism can include tiredness, dry skin, constipation, hairloss and the inability to lose weight. Are you suffering with any of these symptoms?
Has the doctor given you thyroid hormone tablets? This seems to be the treatment given for hypothyroidism. They work by boosting the thyroid hormone to a normal level.
Symptoms caused by thyroidism should gradually improve once thyroid hormone levels are made normal again. Have you had an increase in weight due to the low thyroid?
Some weight can be lost when hormone levels have normalised and there is no reason why you cannot exercise with a low thyroid, as long as you feel up to it.
Hope this answers some of your questions. If you still feel unsure then I recomend you go back an see your GP.
Well bye for now
