Thinning hair???

DebbieH

Cathlete
Just wondering if anyone has experienced this...when I went into menopause three years ago, my hair started falling out in the shower. Not in big clumps but lots on my hands when I would rinse out the shampoo. It stopped after about a month and never did it again. Now, all of a sudden, the past couple of months, it is at it again! Thankfully, I have very thick hair but I cannot believe how much thinner it is now! Almost freaks me out. Is this a hormonal imbalance or just a part of getting older? Anyone go thru this?

Right there with you on this. I've started using Aveda Scalp Balance shampoo to ensure a healthy scalp. I've started taking Biotin supplements which are supposed to promote hair and scalp health. I actually went to a dermatologist about it and she said it just happens to some people at that point in life - it is a hormonal shift. I noticed it seems to slow down and then speed up at times. I also try to eat a balanced diet making sure I get enough protein, exercise, keep stress low - all the usual "health" stuff. I had pretty thick hair before, too. I think it's starting to balance out - I sure hope it doesn't get worse. It totally freaks me out!

Thanks! I wondered about the stress too. We've had a lot on our plate with my FIL being in a nursing home since last Christmas. I try to eat as healthy as possible and take my daily vitamins but it is scary thinking that it might not stop falling out! I have a student who comes to my class who ended up with a bald spot at the crown! YIKES! I hope your problem balances out very soon.

You could see my mom's scalp when she was the age I am now. She had the same thick, curly hair I do but she started losing it in her late 30s. Totally freaked me out. I started taking Phytophanere about 5 years ago, it's a vitamin for hair & nails. It has biotin, carotene, wheat germ oil, fish oil, & other stuff that's supposedly really good for hair. It's pricey but my hair is still pretty thick & healthy--it's either the vitamins or my DAD'S genes. ;-)

ETA: Debbie, I remember your beautiful thick hair, it made me so jealous! Take the vitamins & see your dermatologist.

I use Rogaine, and it has stopped my hair from thinning any further. I just signed up for its delivery by mail every four months. It costs a little under $180 for the whole year, or $60 dollars for a 4-month supply. It's much more expensive if you buy it by the month from the drugstore.

Oh, no Deb!! Not that gorgeous, thick, beautiful mane of yours! My hair was always my best feature, and now you've got me worried. I'm entering periomenopause and I feel awful. Lots of body aches and pains. This weird "foggy" feeling in my head. Terrible chills. It's quite an adventure. :(

Laura!

Thanks for the compliment! Anyone who doesn't know me would prob think my hair is still thick but, boy, can I tell a difference. I wasn't sure if I should go to a dermatologist, GYN or even an endo??? I had my thyroid checked last year and no problems THEN! Funny thing....I just started taking fish oil a couple months ago and started thinking, "Could it be the fish oil?" So, I stopped taking it this week. I do take other vitamins. Thanks for your thoughts.

RNYogamom!

God gives us less hair on our heads with age so that we may take care of our new BEARD!

AMEN to that! Ha! I can look in my bathroom mirror and not see a single hair on my chin and get in my car and look in the rearview mirror and see one a FOOT LONG! Oh, the JOY!

Garance...

Thanks! Did a doc suggest Rogaine? I am just curious as to why it is happening? I am 55 & thought maybe it is just "normal"? I am hoping NOT and can find out what to do to prevent more from falling out. Thanks! I will mention Rogaine to whatever professional I see.

Nance!

I'm sorry you are struggling with some adverse symptoms! I have been full-fledged menopausal for three years now and honestly, besides about a month of sleeplessness and mid-section weight gain(UUUGH) at the onset, I felt pretty good. (I chalked it up to all my exercise) I hope with all your other symptoms that you don't have to experience the hair loss. It's scary! Keep me posted!
