I've read a lot about young women obsessing about obtaining the so-called "thigh gap," usually at the expense of their health. It's tied to the pro-ana (pro-anorexia) movement, which prides thinness above all else. Women need to know that being strong and fit is MUCH better than trying to achieve a look that is sickly (unless that is your body type). As an ex-bulimic I know how bad weight obsessions can be and wish young girls were reading articles like the ones Nathalie posted! I saw something about Olympic athletes being fat-shamed... it's sad when you're considered "fat" if you have muscle definition. Sorry for rambling! I just agree with the articles Nathalie shared and am tired of seeing women being slammed on social media for every perceived imperfection. Grrrr...

I love Pauline's post and had shared it with my very young daughter when I saw this on FB. She is only 11 and is already wondering why she doesn't have a thigh gap! Such a pointless goal. Her healthy, strong, athletic body is what I want her to appreciate. She has begun maturing already and looks quite different than many of the girls her age. Helping young girls develop a positive body image is a struggle. I will certainly be discussing the second article you posted with her.

"A thigh gap is not a sign of fitness or that you're even lean."

My legs have always been skinny. I have never had a gap. But if you look closely at pics of thigh gaps I think it has something to do with the hip structure and how your thigh bones fit into the hip. I'm very narrow in the hip area so even if my thighs were skinny they don't have the gap.
But I have yet to encounter a guy who fussed about my not owning the thigh gap.
I certainly never felt less of a person just because I don't have it.

I find it abhorable that "thigh gap" is even a "thing." I think it's horrific and off putting that thigh gap would be something that our society emphasizes as desirable for women To strive for. Talk about a recipe for creating body dysmorphia and disordered eating! I could go on and on about this ridiculous phenomenon but I think I've made my point:confused:

Oh it's a thing all right. You should see all the Instagram girls posing and it's funny because they try to angle their legs funny to create the thigh gap illusion and anyone with a brain can see.

Good grief, I would love to meet the person who came up with the term "thigh gap " and give their head a shake!
Maybe I'm just getting old and can't tolerate stupid stuff anymore.

the thigh gap is not a knew thing as something desirable by men. My dh is 53 and it was something the boys talk about as something desirable in highschool (late 70's he graduated in 81) Its reverenced as making the vagina more accessible or crudely " f*ckable"

He still thinks its sexy. I'm guessing there are other men that think that way also. He never said a thing to me about it until I ask when the article on forums like this started popping up.

I'm guessing the girls trying to achieve this goal is being driven by internet or the young men are more vocal about their desires. I'm also going to guess the available of porn and the more open society is making young women feel more pressure to achieve the ideal or less attractive if they don't have a certain look.

on a lighter note

So my dh has a thing for the gap but we've been together 25 years before I knew it was something he like LOL He just always told me he ask me out because of my a$$.

I think on this forum we are all olders and call all this bull sh*t but I remember younger years being critical of my body. I'm glad it was before internet and multi - media world

@Cafelattee :D:D:eek:

Lol I almost had a heart attack reading your post Lol.
Did you explain this below to your husband?

I was not made with this wide hip structure cause God knew somehow my hip girdle had to match my personality!
I ain't giving key access that easily!!!! Whoever has access has to earn it and be special!!! Lol:D
Phew phew phew:);)

I'm laughing my a$$ off Cafelattee!! Great post! As a guy, I never thought about "access" (killin me here!!) I always thought it was sexier to have muscle than space, but to each their own. I remember watching Ludmilla Tourescheva (sp)? as a young guy (she was a Soviet gymnast). and I thought she was incredibly sexy and absolutely NO thigh gap! Still laughing!!

From a Mother's perspective.....something I would tell my daughters. If you are seeing a guy, and his biggest concern is that you don't have a thigh gap, he's probably not the guy for you. If your lack of a thigh gap derails him, it won't be pretty, when real life kicks him in the head. I guarandamntee, that life will eventually kick him in the head, it always does!!! Real life, is kinda funny that way.

There's a new trend - #mermaidthighs (I think) as a rebuke to the crazy thigh gap issue. The idea is to be proud of thighs that touch, just as a mermaid's do! :)

Hi,

I am posting Pauline article on thigh gap as the link above is not working.

Thigh Gap: what's the obsession with it and WHY?

Space between the upper thighs is an obsession amongst women nowadays. I remember I too wanted that back in the time I was starving myself. Knowing what my motive was, to be very, very thin and have protruding bones, vertebrae and ribs, I feel it's important to explain why a thigh gap is a ridiculous fitness goal.
Here are my 5 facts about thigh gaps:
1. Unless you have very wide hip bones which usually comes with a narrow shoulder structure, a thigh gap means your adductor muscles are underdeveloped. That is not a sign of strength!

2. In an attempt to firm up the inside thigh, infamous for being flabby, you need to BUILD those adductors! The inside thigh hosts several adductor muscles which you can bring up so your thighs shape up.
3. If you skip training inside thighs to get a thigh gap, you will also inhibit growing rounder glutes. Why? To get round glutes you need healthy balance in all your leg and hip muscles. Weak adductors can lead to hip impingement syndrome, knee injuries and more.
4. You can't spot reduce fat in this area unless you have liposuction done. You think cutting out fat is bullet proof? Nope! Fat cells can proliferate and if you suck some out, new ones can still form. You also risk getting a lumpy look, like cellulite from uneven results.
5. Women with an athletic body type, narrow hips and broad shoulders, should in no way strive to have a thigh gap unless you're a catwalk model. You might have some space in the mid part of your thighs, however, the top section should not.
