<---explains to Ellen that DS has a genetic syndrome called Prader-Willi Syndrome. The syndrome is best known for the lack of control over appetite. They are always hungry, have a very slow metabolism and gain weight on very reduced calorie diets. All the food in our house is locked away, as well as money, which means food to DS. He has other behavioral problems associated with the syndrome. We just spend thousands of dollars and 4 long years fighting a legal battle with the county mental retardation agency, who said DS wasn't retarded and therefore not eligable for funds to move into a residence specific for his syndrome. We won the court battle, then had to wait for the money to become available. Now we have to get him into a residence, or we will lose the funding. He spend last night at a residence about 2 hours away from here, which we have heard wonderful things about. We are hoping they can find space for him. Room in these specific residences are as rare as hen's teeth. If he gets into the residence, he will have a job, more control of food accessibility, an exercise program, and a social life, none of which he has now.
