The thing that makes my bike stationary

I recall a previous post some months back that someone (Michele??) had mentioned that there is thingamabob that I can attach my bike to so I can use it indoors. I can't find the post, and I don't recall what dohicky is called. I think I may want one for the winter. I don't have a fancy pants bike, just a normal bike from the toy store and I wonder if it could still be used. By changing gears I could mimic hills and such, right? So where do I find this magic piece of equipment and what is it called? I can Google it if I know what its called.

Shana (meowracer) uses it, I think. I think she called it a trainer? Hopefully she'll pipe in here to give you more info.

I LOVE my trainer. It's not the same as a spin bike - not quite as stable - but there's nothing like a trainer for really well, training to ride. I have a Cyclops Fluid as well. I'm not thrilled with it - it's my third Cyclops in 15 years, and I think this is the flimsiest one. I will go Blackburn or Kinetics next time.

You can get three different kinds of resistance - wind, magnetic and fluid.

Wind is NOISY! If you want to be able to ride while watching DVD's or movies, don't consider this one. You'll need the volume on ultra loud.

Magnetic is a little quieter - a better choice if you don't want to spend the $300 that a fluid resistance cost.

Fluid is the top of the line - the quietest and smoothest.

Don't worry about getting the one with the shifter to change resistance - all of them change resistance when you change your gears.

You will also need something to prop the front wheel so you don't feel as if you are riding WAY down hill. But I've found that 2 risers from my step upside down on a yoga mat work perfectly.

Wow- great memory! :D I love my trainer. I have the Cycleops Fluid2 and it hasn't given me any problems at all but as I took my bike off of it yesterday, I wondered when that day would come. It has been many miles! It is very easy to use. Here is a link: http://www.cycleops.com/c-6-trainers.aspx?skinid=2. Also, Amazon shows it with a bike attached if you want to see that. There are some on ebay but I got mine from a bike shop online - just shopped around for the best deal. Any bike should work on it but the more gears you have, the better off you will be. I have 24 gears - I would think you would want, at a minimum, 18 gears. You will be missing out on good hill climbing though...which is standing up and pushing hard in those high gears. You will also want to have a back tire that is smooth down the middle or it will be too noisy. If that doesn't bother you, then ok but don't spend the extra cash just for the fluid trainer's quietness :) The fluid one offers other benefits as well. You will also want an odometer to attach to the back wheel if you want to watch speed, mileage, and RPMs. Like Christine mentioned, you need something to go under the front tire. They make a riser for that which costs about $10; never thought about using step risers! Hope this helps. It really is a great thing to have and to me, much more comfy than a spinning bike.
