The "not smoking free" healthclub

Krisztina

Cathlete
Today I went back to the gym and I asked for the manager but they said he wasn’t there. I smelled cigarette but that wasn’t intensive. This was a different receptionist and I thought I’m going to be ok and will talk to the manager later.
I was done with my cardio when I smelled cigarette. I looked at the receptionist and this one was smoking too. I got really mad and immediately went there and asked her if she was allowed to smoke in that area.
She said: yes.
I asked for the manager’s number and she said: she cannot give me his number because he is very sick.
I told her that this is a health club and I don’t think she can smoke inside the building. / I was very polite and nice!!/
Her final answer was: “when you come here next time tell the receptionist not to smoke because it bothers you.” Can you believe this? I have to ask the staff not to smoke in a health club?!
I will never go back there. This is ridiculous and crazy.
Don’t they have to have permission? Shouldn’t somebody check if they follow the rules?

Thanks for listening I'm just very mad and disappointed.

Kristina

RE: The

That just isn't right, especially in a health club. They are there to help you prolong your life.....not pass on second hand smoke to kill you sooner.:( I live in Az and to the best of my knowledge you can't smoke in any building unless it is a bar. Okay,(I'm going to date myself (say how old I am) 35), I remember back in the mid 80's , walking into Fry's (Krogers) grocery store and people were smoking in the aisles and putting their butts out on the floor. I definitley would report this to the manager. Hopefully that person is not one to hang out w/ the receptionist and smoke.:(

RE: The

be persistant in asking for the manager/owner whoever is above them and let them know. somebody has to speak up and if this person gives you a hard time then let others know before they decide on joining that gym. personally i would be a b*tch about those things b/c it doesn't make sense to smoke in a place where ppl are trying to improve their health. we inhale enough stuff in the air these days we should be able to go to our "sanctuary" to get aways from all these things and just let the stress and disease sweat out of our bodies.not to inhale these airhead's bad habits. hell even the ppl at the office of our apartment complex are not allowed to smoke in the office. you see these poor guys and gals freezing their butts off by the closed pool just to get a drag.

RE: The

 That's appalling! Smoking in a health club??? I'd be upset too - definitely try to talk to the manager (when he gets back from sick leave). That's just unbelievable. I wouldn't want to go back there either. x(

RE: The

I would be very upset too.

Minnesota is slowly but surely changing the laws about smoking in public places (I can't understand why it is taking so long). I can't stand to go in any places where smoking is allowed.

RE: The

I would ask for a refund and I would never go back. Smmoking in a health club!? Rediculous!!

RE: The

I would be mad and disappointed too, so feel free to vent. I really don't like being around it but especially in that setting. Trying to work out and having to breath that....it just doesn't mix.

Don't forget that you might speaking up for other people who don't feel bold enough to do it. Keep being polite, but I would be persistant about it.

RE: The

There has to be someone in charge even if the manager is out sick....an assistant manager, perhaps? I'm sure there are other people who are appalled by this so kudos to you for speaking out. That's just unbelievable - smoking in a health club!!

Angie

RE: The

I'd be persistent too until I got to speak to the manager. And if he/she doesn't do anything, I'd demand my money back. I still cannot believe that people are smoking in a health club - that is just insane.

RE: The

Kristina,
I would tell the "smoking receptionist" that if she does not give you the manager's number you will have that health club slapped with a government fine so fast her head will spin. I lived in Pennsylvania...it is against the law to smoke in government buildings or in workplaces with five or more people (unless you are a bar or restaurant with a liquor license). I'm sure she will comply. Here's your your amunition:

Good luck to you!

RE: The

That really is bizarre. NJ also bans smoking in public buildings. I guess I never realized other states hadn't done the same. Can't believe people would smoke at a gym.

RE: The

Blooper. Holy cow! I pulled up the wrong state! Heck, they can smoke in workplaces as long as they are not government (looks like they are one of the few states who just don't have legislation against that yet!) Isn't that just really sad!!

I would still demand to see the manager and get my money back...how "dare" they promote themselves as a health club when their own employees smoke.

Robin

RE: The

Is this a National Health Club? If it is, I am certain that they would have rules about such a thing. I'd demand the contact info for the manager and the receptionists continue to say he's too sick, as for the contact info for his boss. If that doesn't work, and it is a national chain (or at least there are more than one), go to their website and get the phone number for headquarters and lodge a complaint with them.

You will be doing the business a favor. If you notice it, others will, and they will simply quit, and not say why they are. It's not the image most health clubs want to project.

RE: The

This is a private gym and opened recently. I was so happy because this one is close to my house.
I will go back tomorrow and ask them to give my money back. I just don't want to w/o there.

Robin- Thanks for the link. I will print this out and take it with me. I think since the receptionist desk is together with the workout area they are not allowed to smoke inside the building.
Today I went to another gym and they have the same equipments and of course they don't smoke.

Thanks girls!

RE: The

I am interested to find out if the manager knows and just can't find any receptionists who won't smoke up front to work (it is very hard to find people to fill those jobs because they pay so low) or if the manager thinks it is OK to smoke there.

I don't think it is appalling that they smoke - to each his own - but smoking inside of a building is unheard of in this day and age. And inside a health club....well, it is kind of comical that they think it will fly there. If the management/owners know about it, they won't be in business very long because they really don't have a clue.

Good luck and let us know what happens. I never thought I would have to preface "non smoking" when choosing a health club!

RE: The

All I can say is Holy Cow! This is unbelieveable! There has to be some rules or someone is holding one over on the manager!

Jo

RE: The

Kristina..in this day and age all I can say is UNBELIEVABLE!! I don't blame you one bit for being upset and I hope you get all of your money back.

OMG!! cigarette smoking in a GYM?? Unreal!! I would be so angry!!

Here is how I would handle it..
I would call the Manager/Owner and let them know that someone is smoking at the desk, if they don't seem to care or refuse to do anything about it. I would call your local news and or local Newspaper and let everyone know that the NEW gym in town is not a "Smoke free" facility. People don't want to go to a gym and smell smoke...Good heavens what is wrong with people!!

Where is the receptionist's desk located in the gym? How large is this place, is it a chain? I would do something to get the owner's attention!! I would call on the phone and ask who the owner is, I am sure they will give you a name..then I would call them at home and tell them what you intend to do...
