The Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book 100 % Whole Wheat

Just wanted to give an update to my whole wheat bread baking woes! I posted a few weeks ago about how unappetizing my homemade whole wheat bread was and it was recommended to me that I try Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book. I did, and this past week got up the nerve to try her 100 percent whole wheat recipe. I wanted to report back that it is FANTASTIC!! I've made four loaves now and each one was soft and moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The loaves still have a touch of mass to them but nothing like before. So, THANKS!!!

hey Robin!

Let me see if I can scan and post it. It's a simple recipe but she gives a lot of tips throughout and it will take me forever to type it! :)

Stay tuned!

Sparrow,

I have Laurel's Kitchen a handbook for vegetarian cookery and nutrition. Will the recipe be in this book as well? Her breads are made of 100% wheat or whole grain. Love this book! Thinking about getting the one you have too.

Sparrow,

Isn't Laurel's Bread Book wonderful! I was going to post the recipe my friends use for their daily bread, but couldn't find it due to remodeling. Anyhow, when I went to their house, I asked for it again. Here, it came from Laurel's Bread Book! With them using it and Sandra (FiddleFit) recommending it, I just had to buy the book too!:7 I didn't post it for you since I saw you had already purchased the book. Anyhow, it's the Oatmeal Bread recipe. They use vital wheat gluten to help "cheat" with the rising. I didn't when I made mine.

So far, I've tried the Loaf for Learning (turned out great!), Oatmeal Bread, and Banana Bread. It's been fun playing with these recipes. Today, I'm going to make some more Oatmeal Bread for the week. Which ones have you tried?

Ooooh, Sparrow, I'm thrilled to hear you had such good results! I love these recipes so much I'm always pleased to hear when others have good results, too.

Janie - I have Laurel's cookbook, too, and yes, the whole wheat bread recipe in that book is the same as in her Bread Book. In the Bread book she has an even more detailed breakdown and explanation of the process, and more bread recipes than I ever thought possible. If you want to get more deeply into baking bread with whole grains, the Bread Book is the way to go. If you just want to bake whole wheat bread for an occasional treat, the cookbook will suffice.

Wendy - Do you think I should contact Laurel and suggest I get a few royalties ;) I checked out the banana bread recipe the other day. I like that it uses so many bananas. Now I just have to wait for the ones on my counter to ripen enough to give it a try. That would be easier to do if I'd stop eating them. BTW, I just finished eating two slices of that Oatmeal Bread, toasted, with natural almond butter and blackstrapp molasses. My favourite breakfast, hands down.

Cheers,
Sandra

I ordered the bread book so I can see the more detailed version and more recipes. I love to bake my own bread, have been for many many years. No HFCS in my body!

Thank you,

Janie

Oooo I'm going to have to try the banana bread!! I tried the corn crackers but they were near impossible to get off the pan and ended up looking like a pile of chicken feed. Guess that happens when the cook forgets to grease the baking pan :p

I have not found a link to the whole wheat recipe online or been able to scan it in. So I will type it out ASAP and post. It's so good it's worth the work!!
