?? The inconsistency of the fitness world

How many times have we read so many conflicting views on exercise? It baffles me. Today I just received this notification:

*Too many forty-plus folks have fallen for the myth that you need numerous days per week of hard training to get good results. That is more bunk from the "magazine" world, which is full of bodybuilders putting their body into a dangerously high gear using illegal steroids. Good news-drugs and lengthy workouts are not required!

For us in the forty and over club, it's important to consider frequency, intensity and time. The frequency of your training build the body of your dreams-if you train with sufficient intensity and efficiency.*

I don't get why some say you can exercise less some say exercise more. The continued how much is enough. It seems like you're in a room of mirrors and when you find one that opens for you, that's the one you go to.

I think Jack Lalanne (s) doesn't agree that you have to change your work out routine as long as you do SOMETHING.

I think articles like this are for those that are looking to exercise less so they can validate their thinking.

To sum it all up, in a nutshell..just listen to your body. Who cares whatever everyone is doing. If you push too hard too soon, you wind up sick or you over do it and that sets you back. You can go further if you have the proper rest and then proceed for the maximum workout!

I read in a fitness magazine lately that it is a MYTH that it is harder to lose weight after years of yo-yo weight fluctuation. I'm not sure I believe that or not. I have a terrible habit of yo-yo'ing and it seems that everytime I try to lose the weight again, it gets harder and slower to lose. It seems that my metabolism has slowed way down. Of course, that may be due to me getting older, too. :(

At 45 now, I thought it was impossible for me to lose the 38 lbs I had gained over the past 20 yrs since my first pregnancy, well I found out thru hard work and changing my eating habits and my drinking habits, I could get the results I wanted, and have, I am almost at my goal, now as far as my weight is concerned I am at my goal, but now I am look to tighten the butt and abs and they are coming along nicely.... its not impossible just takes hard work... just had to add I started my journey 2 yrs ago this month... This is one of my favorite jokes. Fitness literature is just like the bible or the constitution. For every one thing you read, you can find 10 others that say the opposite.

So the previous poster was right--listen to your body. Do what you enjoy & what will help you stick to a fitness routine.

There are always two or more schools of thought to one fitness question. Just going through the eating and exercise plans of professional bodybuilders that are posted online makes me dizzy. Everyone has a different way of getting one result. I've learned what's right for me through trial and error. Takes a lot of time and patience, but it's worth doing. How can I know what's right for me if I don't give it a chance? I do the work, and has has been said, listen to my body. And I take notes.

Rhonda, I just wanted to add that being a fellow 40+'er I know you can reach your goal!! I was in a car accident a few years ago and for two years I couldn't work out because of the injury...I kept walking regularly but I couldn't do any heavy weights or jarring exercise. I didn't gain weight but boy, did I lose muscle tone. When I finally started back on the road to a hard body that was when I found this forum and the Cathe workouts. I still have pain but it's not debilitating and the stronger I keep my back muscles the better quality of life I'm going to have as I continue to age.

I think back to 5 years ago and I could not even ride on our riding lawn mower because the pain in my back was horrible. But I carefully worked up to the level of fitness I am at again and now I can do all of the Cathe workouts without moderation's and my back is very strong, but now I need to keep it that way or I fear I will really fall apart as I age. I also added swimming to my regular routine last fall and I can't wait for summer to get here so I can kayak for the first time in a long time.

Life is good!

It just makes you realize that no one has a clue. Look how many times they change their mind on what foods are good for you and what's bad for you.

You also hear from one source that it's just as good to break your daily cardio up into 10 minute sessions throughout the day, and another will say you have to do it all together. What-EVER!

But even with getting older, I thought exercising will speed it up??

I agree, Pinky. If we all have a different set of fingerprints, I belive we all have a slightly different set of metabolisms. I also read the body building lines and what they eat, makes you say ....what!!! I could not live like that every single day in day out. not much variety at all.

Then when I pipe in about what I do, they think, I'm not doing anything.

I really really would love to take one of them home and see how they do with Cathe even with their 40 pounders.

LOL Donna, I guess that's another reason I don't buy the magazines. Sometimes I do gander into them but I lately, just recently, I have found what Cathe does is what they recommend or can't decide on how and when to do what.

Is there anyone that does routines like the FitnessRX and stick to that because the magazine says so?

If we did not live in a fast producing society, we (I) would not get so discouraged about my exercise journey.

Then with the getting older, ahhh... I see it as giving people a crutch not to have to push themselves. I sure did today and my darn triceps were shaking....as if they saw a ghost. Hope I get my massage today. I can use it.
