The Golden Compass

I'm halfway through the book "The Golden Compass", I guess I haven't got to the "juicy" parts yet. There's been some kidnappings, child slavery issues.

My daughter (who is 19 now) was hyperlexic, reading beyond her years. She read Gone with the Wind in second grade, War and Peace in the 4th etc etc. It was very difficult finding books for her to read because she was not ready for the concepts that were the subject matter of the books.

As Bill suggested, parents should read the books or preview movies prior to their children. My daughter watched Schindler's List at a very young age, it brought up a lot of discussions and probably a nightmare or two.

It's not about "juicy" issues. There are claims that this movie has atheist tendancies based on the author being a proclaimed atheist and references in the book to the rejection of organized religion and the abuse of power in the Catholic Church. Supposedly in the movie this will be diluted and be a critique of all dogmatic institutions. The Catholic League has called for a boycott of the movie.

This will just stir up another controversial thread about religion - UGGGGHHHH.

I can't say I will see ever see this movie. The book bored me to tears. My hubby read all 3 of the books, said it picked up in the 2nd one. But I thought it was a terribly written mish mosh of crap. And I may get flamed for this one, I am a whole hearted atheist, so my problem is not with the context of the movie/book. It's just a bad story and poorly written, in my opinion. And FYI, for the poster on that link that says Mr Pullman hates God, that would be incorrect. An atheist cannot hate God, because we cannot hate what does not exist.

And when they say it's a child's book, they don't mean 3 and 4 year olds. They mean 10-13 year olds. I would say same age as Harry Potter. I think by that age kids are old enough to start to figure out their own spiritual or non spiritual beliefs.

I do agree that there is not enough overall parenting in the world. My son is 6 and he didn't see Spiderman 3 and Transformers. Coworkers of mine who have kids the same age took there kids. Although those moives are based on comics and cartoons, they were full of violence (even if it was fantasy violence) and not meant for younger children. We need to be aware of what we are letting our kids watch/read.

But I also think that if a movie topic is offense to you and your family, you have the right not to go and you do have the right to let others know what the movie is FULLY about, however in my opinion, it shouldn't be boycotted because you don't like/agree with the subject matter. I don't, nor do any atheist's I know write a letter to NBC every spring and tell them not to play "The 10 Commandments" because it's a crock of hooey, I just DON'T TURN IT ON!!!!

Ok, flame away

Well said Nan.

If a flame war gets started, it will be because no-one needs another poster to alert them to what the poster believes is or is not appropriate for our children to watch or read. We are all capable of making up our own minds thanks. By posting at all, he has begun the proselytizing. Please keep it to yourself. And please desist from demonizing children's literature. Censorship has no place in education.

Carola,

By calling for a boycott of the movie the Catholic League has brought curiousity to bear. The movie will probably make more money now. The Catholic League didn't exactly hurt Dan Brown's "DaVinci Code" did they? The movie stunk but made money because of the hoopla.

I haven't finished The Golden Compass because but it's been very dry. Atheist, spiritualist, believer or not the book stinks IMO. The movie probably will too.

Bill has asked that parents research the decision, parents need to be the "censors" for their own children. As a parent you should know best what your child is ready to participate or not participate in.

Disparity and difference of opinion, the studying of other beliefs will usually result in a stronger faith and a reverence for all peoples and things. I choose to be spiritual and believe in a God who models the teachings of Christ, my daughter is studying Judaism. Atheism does not equal evil.

I appreciate and respect your opinion, David! In fact I actually agree with most of what you are saying.

I personally don't have a problem discussing a subject like that, however, I find that with subjects like religion or politics, a lot of times emotions fly high and feelings get hurt.

It appears to me that the OP has a history of posting those kinds of topics for the sole purpose of riling people up and that's what I have the problem with.

The seventh and eighth grader that I taught loved the books. We had no idea that they were anti religion. The kids enjoyed the story and those books were constantly out!

sorry, I intend to stay out of this religious debate as long as possible.
i just have a really dumb question. What's an OP? Again, sorry.

dave,

boy could i have used your help a few years ago. in all my years of working as an slp, i have had only one child who was diagnosed as "autistic/hyperlexic". he is now in the 5th grade, and has made a lot of progress. it has been a long road, but it was his mother, not other so called professionals who was the biggest help.

Oh, great. I guess there will be protesters at this movie, too. Life of Brian, Last Temptation of Christ, Fahrenheit 911...I didn't mind having to walk through a crowd of people who felt the need to stand out in front of a movie theatre for hours to protest movies they'd never seen, because someone else who had never seen them told them they should. But they did take up valuable parking space.

Interesting how the op seems to trust snopes about this. I guess sources of information are reliable when they reinforce your beliefs and not to be trusted when they don't. How convenient.

I loved the books and will most definitely go to the movie. Can't wait. I don't remember them being anti-religion, but they definitely encouraged children to question authority and fight for the right thing, even when the immorality was all-pervasive and was being committed by trusted adults. The children in the book are intelligent and empowered and fighting to end crimes and abuses being committed against them and others. They are aware that they have the power to shape the future for the better. I guess those are dangerous things to teach our kids huh? And of course we don't want to expose them to films that encourage them to think independently. That's just anti-American!
