The Florida Keys

My DH and I are thinking about taking a trip to the Keys. We have never been there. Anyone live there? Anyone vacation there? We enjoy bike riding. What are some fun things to do there?

I live near Orlando and have been to the Keys several times. We have friends who own a home in Marathon (just about half way to Key West).

The Keys are famous for their water sprorts: Scuba diving, parasailing (on some resorts), swimming, fishing, boating, etc. As far as riding bikes, I'm not sure how popular that is in the area.

What Key are you interesting in visiting?

Most of the people of the Keys are into relaxation, period. Very, very laid back atmosphere.

Key West is probably the most popular destination. It's a little different. For instance, when eating at a few of the outside restaurants, you can expect people to bring their dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, etc to dinner with them. When walking along Duval, sometimes you've got to watch out for the roosters walking along the road. I love taking a trip their at least once a year. Very, very relaxing....but, like I said, different.

Oh, yeah, drinking is a very popular pastime.

Hi Joanne! My parents vecation there every year, well it's kind of a vacation, it's a meeting that they go to, but they have fun too. I unfortunately have never been. But my parents love it! And they aren't one for activities. But I'm sure you can do a google search on the Keys and find out what there is to do! I bet you'll find there's a lot of fun stuff to do!

Joanne,

I have been to the Keys several times also. I have gone every year now for the last 4 years. It depends what your interests are. Do you want to snorkel or dive? If you want to snorkel which I highly suggest I think Key Largo or Islamorada is a great place to stay. John Pennekamp state park is beautiful. Keys Diver is a great boat to go out on for short or long snorkel excursions. Let me know what key you are interested in and I can give you lots of info.

I got to thinking that you hadn't asked WHEN to go. Florida weather is a factor to take into consideration, especially when you are from a colder climate. It looks like you live in Minnesota.

The best months to go to the Keys are, IMHO: March, April, May or September, October, November. These months are typically a little cooler and a lot less humid.

If you go in June, July or August you will probably get a lot of afternoon rainstorms. We Florida residents welcome these storms after hours of 95-98 degrees in 90-100% humidity, but I assume a vacationer would not prefer them.

We are planning on going in January or February. It is so cold here, we want to take a break from it. The plan right now is to fly into Miami and drive down to Key West. Possibly, staying one night in Marathon on the way down.

Thanks everyone for your help.
