The Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno...responses appreciated

I bought Tosca Reno's book online at Amazon.com as many of you suggested. Let me begin by saying that I felt that it's time I really try harder to eat clean because I'm working my butt off working out!!!!! I want to look as good as I possibley can for the summer. Most people would not consider me to be overweight, but I would like to trim down about 10 pounds and build lean muscle mass. I've been eating rather healthy for quite awhile, but know in my heart that I can do soooo much better. I read her book and decided to journal everything, greatly increase my water intake and eat 6 small meals a day....making sure to eat a protein with a carb. It's only been about 2 weeks (and trust me I have not been perfect....have had a few glasses of wine here and there), but I will say that my appetite has decreased greatly. By making sure I eat a small healthy meal (snack?) every 4 hours, I no longer overeat or have a desire for sweets. THIS HAS BEEN A MAJOR CHANGE FOR ME!!!!! So I was wondering....for those who have been following this "lifestlye" seriously....for quite a while...how is it going? Can you describe your results?

Hi!
I finished Tosca Reno's book on Thursday. I really did like it, and will follow it, though I will not be using any suppliments or protein powders (just not for me). I thought it had really sound nutritional information. I can say that after following it since Friday my appetite is gone. This never happens to me, ever. I feel good too. I can't wait to see how I do in a month.

The only thing I did buy in addition to fruits and vegetables is Flaxseed. I now add it to my cottage cheese, yogurt, etc. By the way I just had dinner and could hardly finish my meal. Two hours earlier (before dinner), I had my 5th "meal"....1/2 a grapefruit and a very small handful of walnuts. Good Luck

RE: The Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno...responses apprec...

I bought Tosca Reno's book about 2 or 3 months ago. A lot of her recommendations make a lot of sense to me.

I was never overweight, I had never been on a diet before until I was pregnant with my second child, and was put on a low-fat diet with 3 meals per day, resulting in uncontrolable hunger attacks. In the end, in my second pregnancy I had gain 25 to 30 lbs more than during my first pregnancy.

After that I went on a downward spiral, Atkins, SouthBeach, The Zone, Fat Flush, The Rotation Diet, Bob Greene ....., saw two nutritionists, low calorie, high carb, low carb, low fat, high fat, you name it, I did it. It just made my head spin. I was the poster child for a yo-yo dieter! But certainly not by choice.

The only thing that every single one of those diets did was to deplete my energy and after a week or two on the plan, I couldn't continue my exercise program. The worst ones for me in that respect were Atkins and SouthBeach!

So finally, after my weight hit an all-time high and I saw a picture of myself taken at my son's birthday party, I decided to change my life.

I applied the principles that I had read in Tosca's book and modified it according to what had worked for me successfully in the past - prepregnancy. I started eating every 2 to 3 hours, always include a little bit of protein with my carbs. I had always eaten fairly healthy food, but I tightened it a little more, however, contrary to Tosca's recommendations, I will not eat non-fat dairy products or drink skim milk. I tried it at first but it just doesn't work for me.

I have been eating "clean" for close to 2 months now and only did daily walks. I dropped a few pounds it went VERY slow.

A few weeks ago I started to incorporate Cathe's Intermediate Rotation plus 45 to 60 min walks/walk-runs with my dogs in the evening, plus yoga/stretching.

As of this morning, 16 days into eating right and Cathe Rotation, I am down 10.5 lbs, my bodyfat dropped 6 % (don't know how accurate the scale is but it's a definite downward trend - don't be fooled though, I have plenty to lose :)) and I am down one dress size.

I haven't had as much energy in years, so I have actually been able to stick to my exercise program without fail for 16 days in a row. I think the last time that happened was about 7 or 8 years ago.

Sooooo, I am pretty happy with the book. I don't eat clean 100 % of the time, I don't stick to Tosca's book 100 % either, I do not subscribe to all of her recommendation, they are too stringent for me and there are many things that I have learned that work for me that are not mentioned in the book.

To me this is not a quick-fix diet (just the word diet makes me hungry :) ), it is a lifestyle that I plan to continue for the rest of my life. Even my kids and my DH changed their diet along with me and I can also see a huge improvement in their energy level.

Good luck to you, let me know how your health journey progresses.

Take care,

Carola

Wow, congratulations on your recent success. By the way, I forgot to mention that I too do NOT drink skim milk or non fat....I put half and half in my coffee (2x a day). You're so right though, it's not a diet, but a lifestyle. I like eating every 3 or 4 hours, never letting myself get hungry!!!!

My kind of girl :)

I forgot to mention, I think about the only thing that bothers me about the book, is, that somewhere in the Q&A section, someone asks her, if they need to exercise in order to lose weight. Her answer is, no, the truth is, you don't need to exercise, it just goes faster if you exercise.

I think she is walking a VERY dangerous path here. If people don't exercise, they have to severely restrict their calories, even on the Eat-Clean Diet which means that their metabolism will slow down and it can result in the same yo-yo dieting as any other weightloss plan.

Definitely does! Thanks for responding so quickly!!! You have no urge to eat at night after that either?

Nope, not at all! I actually have a problem eating all the food. Which is kind of amazing because night time has always been my problem, I would just get those ravenous hunger attacks where nothing was safe anymore. Even if I had put a lock on my fridge and thrown the key away, I would have found a way to get in :)

I eat dinner around 6:30 and the 6th meal (which really is only a small snack) at 8. I go to bed around 9 or 9:30.

I think the reason why I am not hungry, is, that the blood sugar level is pretty even all day and doesn't go through spikes and dips low. And exercise helps with it too.

It did take a couple of days though for my body to adjust, but after that, no problems, I have soooooo much more energy and feel healthier overall.

You have me sold! I am going to at least try and see how I feel. I eat extremely healthy for the most part but eat too much (mostly at night).

I hear you, I was eating fairly healthy but those afternoon and evening attacks, yikes! The thing that I don't do (which is what got me in trouble in the first place) is everything non-fat. I eat between 50 and 80 g of fat each day and most of the time my dairy products are 2 %. I try to keep the saturated fat to less than 10 %, but not at all cost.
The fat helps to keep my hunger under control and it is actually needed to help the body absorb certain vitamins like Vitamin A. I always eat salad with at least a little bit of oil.

Let me know how it works for you.

Have a great day!
