The DC Visitor's Hellthy Diet

Hello, Cathe-ites - I missed you! DH and I just got back from a weeks vacay in Washington DC, and although the sightseeing was great, I'm d@mn glad to be back home with MY DVD's and MY refrigerator.

I don't know how many of you have ever experienced this in DC, but I gotta tell ya - healthy, economical eating goes right out the window when you're staying inside the Beltway. It was a like the Quest for the Holy Grail #1 to find a casual eatery that was open after 5:00, and #2 to find a place that had like, maybe, ONE vegetable that hadn't been stewed in oil for 5 hours, #3 to find light proteins that weren't buried in pesto and whatever else is fashionable this season. And fresh fruit? HAH! I laugh at that.

I always come back from vacay a little dyspeptic (not to mention corked up) (TMI) because I've been Cathe-deprived and because I don't have access to a pantry that was healthier than I knew.

Anyway. It's good to be home. And if you're planning on going to DC, have a great time, but don't plan on eating clean, even if you are going to those Fine Dining Establishments that you need to take out a second mortgage to pay for.

I was in D.C. 15 years ago. I was able to find ONE good veggie restaurant, but was given dirty looks when I didn't want to order a whole big meal, but just a soup and salad for lunch. I did go back, though, and ate a full meal later.

I also tried to find another restaurant, walking seven blocks from my hotel to find the address, then discovered it was closed (and that it was not a good part of town: the walk back was faster than the walk there).

I always make sure to pack my own healthy foods "just in case."

Hey A-Jock! You should have told me you were coming! I'd have told you to go to Java Green. All vegetarian, about 75 percent of the menu is clean and you can eat for less than $10 per person!

I'm glad you enjoyed the sightseeing and it's good that you got home before the torrential rains started yesterday!

Enjoy your DVDs and your fridge! :)

Hey, Tunabat - I forgot you lived / worked in DC! Doh!

Yeah, we had good luck up until yesterday weather-wise. We'd planned on going to the Jefferson and Roosevelt Memorials yesterday morning and then the Smithsonian American History museum in the afternoon; the rain scuttled the Memorials part. DH, however, is a Smithsonian addict, so we were at the Am. History Museum for about 6 and a half solid hours. I think, after looking at my 796,852nd artifact and legend my brain exploded. Interestingly, we toyed with the idea of going to the Washington Monument, and scuttled THAT about a half hour before the bomb threat.

Ain't life interestin'?
