The Cardio-Free Diet

My boss' wife just got this book from Amazon. She said that the author, Jim Karas, was on some talk shows recently and he stands by the premise that muscle conditioning ALONE is the key to permanent weight loss, along with proper diet, of course.

I glanced through the beginning of it, and wondered if anyone has read this book, or seen any of Karas' interviews. I guess he was on GMA. He used to be an aerobic instructor of sorts and did it all-high impact, step, hi/lo, etc.

I would love to read more and see how he believes the heart muscle gets stronger from muscle cond. only.

Anyone know??

Doreen-
If you check Ask Cathe in past 2 weeks this topic was discussed! I have no input as I had never heard of it.

And... and... and.... well, we don't do cardio JUST for weight loss! Cardio conditioning is essential to keep your heart and lungs and all the stuff that keeps us moving strong and healthy!

I think we sometimes lose sight of the fact that it's not ALL about weight loss. It's about staying healthy and keeping our bodies in great working order so we can have good quality of life.

I agree 100% with Shelley. Who cares how skinny you are if you can't walk up a flight of stairs without gasping for air? Besides, cardio is FUN.

You know, it's just a shame. I venture to say that many of the people on this forum got into working out because they wanted to lose weight. I know I started walking five times a week when I was on Weight Watchers because it's what they recommended. That began my transformation from a couch potato into some who does regular cardio because it just makes me FEEL better.

This guy is taking away the opportunity to introduce people to something that is so necessary in maintaining a healthy functioning body. Go ahead, try it...if you haven't done any cardio in years, a mere 30-minute walk, five days a week and a proper diet with fewer calories will more than likely get you to your weight goal. It doesn't take that much to get started...BUT, you will also get first hand proof of the gigantic benefits of cardio, and you probably won't want to stop.

I've discovered Shapely Secrets and I haven't done cardio in ages. I just breathe and play with that plastic thingy while watching tv and eating bon bons and I went from 489 lbs to looking like Kate Moss on a three week heroin bender, all in just TWO WEEKS! :7 :7
Sorry to hijack thread with my silliness ;)

I did read this book, it is really geared towards people that are completely new to weight training. One thing I disagreed with in the book was his nutrition guide - the calories were way to low for me and didn't account for differences in peoples sizes or activity levels. He simply stated all women should start at 1200 calories/day and throughout the phases of the diet work up to 1500/day. I couldn't make it off of that few calories.

I am afraid to say it for getting bashed, but I have been cardio free now for a while and am really loving it. I have given more focus to my weight training and really do work up a sweat and increase my heart rate while lifting. I think that different things work for different people. I still like to take my pooches for a walk in the park, and I may do an occasional low intensity kickbox at some point in the future, but I am getting great results from stopping high intensity cardio. I recently visited the doctor and she commented on my weight and blood pressure and asked if I had been working out more - I had to say actually no. Less time working out - used to work out 6 days per week, now I do 3 to 5 (one heavy leg day, upper body split into two days, yoga, if I feel like more I'll do a light weight leg day).

Sorry for the long post -- just wanted to share my recent experiences.

I just ordered this book from amazon last week after all of the discussion on this board about it. I am a nutritionist and a nurse and I have not heard any real "proof" that cardio is not an essential part of health. I think that all things in moderation is the key, key in your diet and exercise program. I look forward to reading it. I also ordered the Eating Clean book also discussed here, just to be informed. Lately I am afraid that my version of eating clean may not be clean enough.x(
