Thanksgiving>What time dinner?

I am having people over for Thanksgiving dinner and not sure what time to invite the guests over. I'm thinking about 4:00 for drinks and appetizers and 5:00 dinner and then some other people are coming over for dessert at 7:00. What do you all think?
 
My hat's off to you!! I think you might be pushing it a little bit in that time range between cocktails and dinner. Having said that, I have no idea how much of the work you will have done ahead of time. If these are good friends the day should be relaxed and they should be willing to pitch in and help you meet your timeline. How wonderful of you to have people over:)

I am so bad! When we had Thanksgiving at our house, I had it early because I didn't want people hanging around all night! Bravo to you! I don't host anymore because it is too stressfull with three kids, but I do love to have people over for other things.

I think the time between dinner and dessert sounds good, and I am not really sure about the appetizers. I usually just have stuff sitting out when people arrive so they can much as they please and then serve main course after about... an hour I guess. :D

I think you might be timing things too close together. If you start at 4:00, go for dinner around 5:30 or 6:00. That's usually when the most socializing goes on, and people have a lot to talk about in the beginning, and the kids go off and play together, etc. I'm going to one on Thursday and one on Friday and they both start at 3:00. I'm glad they are starting early, because I have a long trip home from both.

We have it at our house every year.. we eat around 2:30-3:00 pm, I tell people to come any time after 1:30.. this give DH and I time to get most everything ready so we can enjoy the company before the last minute things have to be done.
 
My family does it the same way. It's at my aunt's this year and she said "cocktails at 4pm, dinner at 5pm, but come early if you want some extra socializing time". Which of course I will since my sons are with my ex this year and I'll be sitting home dreaming of pumpkin pie with whipped cream. :)
 
We'll probably all go to my mom's for about 1pm and she will have snacks/appetizers out right away and will eat dinner around 3pm. This way there is no rush on dessert because people need/want to start heading home.:)
 
we used to have an early dinner at 3-4pm but my brother in law is kind of on an eating schedule with his diabetes so now we eat at 5-6pm. i usually steal a piece of fruit or a handful of baby carrots before we go b/c his mother never has any appetizers but she has a lot of drinks LOL. i like nancy's idea of dinner at 5:30-6pm so you give folks a little more time to socialize. i have always like that at my family's thanksgiving. we would usually get there about noon and just talk for hours while grandma checked on the turkey. remember when grandma's and mothers would get up at 6am to start dinner?

LOL! They've all wised up now! Anyone I know starts cooking the day before that way the only thing you REALLY need to be concerned with on Thanksgiving Day is the turkey! Ofcourse, depending on the size of the turkey and what time dinner is, you might STILL have to get up at 6am to pop that baby in the oven!:)
 
this year i am doing the ham and probably some homemade cranberry sauce. of course my brother in law and i will be the only ones eating it the rest prefer the crap in a can. and maybe some green beans sauted with garlic. so i don't have long maybe get up at 12pm LOL.

In my in-laws house and in mine when I host, dinner is planned based on Thanksgiving day football schedule. Dinner is sharply on the table between the early and late football games. SO in short dinner is around 4pm.;-)
