Teeth and Gums

HI Everyone,
Today while I was at work...for some reason,I ran my tongue along the outside of my teeth,on my left side. For about the length of 3 teeth,my gums feel swollen. It sort of feels like I blister that as been burst and the skin feeling a little wrinkly.Does that make sense?
Its weird.I have never experienced anything with my teeth before.I am very good with hygiene.I have a few cavities, thanks to my childhood days. But other then that nothing. No gum disease in my family or any gum related issues.
It as been like it for about 5 hours. It may have been there longer and I may not have noticed, although I think I would have felt it when brushing.
Anyway,if ANYONE as any info on this or any other matter could you pls respond! I am going to call my dentist tomorrow but chances are,he won't have any openings,
Thanks in advanced!
Lori

Hi Lori!
It sounds like it could be any one of a few different things. Does it hurt, or is it burning, stinging, or tender? Or not at all?

If it's burning or painful, it could be aphthous ulcers (pronounced aff-thiss) which are very common and resolve by themselves within 2 weeks. There are other conditions similar to aphthous ulcers (also sometimes called canker sores) but viral in origin, and these also resolve within 2 weeks or so.

Is there a bad taste in your mouth? It is possible you could have a dental abscess, which is draining into your mouth through a fistula (just a tube through the tissue to the surface) and it would not hurt but you might taste something bad. In this case you should see a dentist right away.

Another possibility is something that sometimes happens if you are under a lot of stress, getting a bad diet and little sleep. It is less likely (from what I know about you) but should not be ignored because it can do irreversible damage in a short time. It's called A.N.U.G. the initials stand for acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (used to be called trench mouth and Vincent's disease).

Your condition sounds like one that might be easily and quickly sorted out. I hope you get in today.

Thanks so much Connie.I was waiting for my teeth to fall out! I get very nervous when something out of the ordinary happens to me.Im one of those who thinks I am dying everytime I get a pain in my head...well maybe not that bad but you know what I am saying.
It doesn't burn or sting.I wouldn't have even known it was there but when I brushed I felt it.Which makes me believe that it has came about after lunch. Now that I now it is there I can't stop sticking my tongue up there.I also never thought about wisdom teeth symptoms.I still haven;t got those yet but for some reason I am thinking that I would be having pain with that and it would be in one specifc area.
It does sort of feel like a ulcer you would have on your tongue. It feels like I burn or like I said, a blister. It doesn't hurt when I eat either.
There are absolutly no symptoms. Its just there.Where it came from...I dunno
Thanks again,
I am calling my dentist first thing in the morning!

Its me again.I just got back from the dentist and I am happy to say that my teeth aren't going to fall out:) I seem to have 4 ulcers on my gums.He figures that it was caused by some sort of food I ate or maybe I scratch it with a fork. The weird thing is, I eat with the right side of my mouth not the left.Food can still get over there but a fork wouldn't.
Just wanted to let you know that my mouth wasn't rotting:)
Lori:)

LOL Lori! It's definitely good news when you know your mouth isn't rotting hehe! I'm glad you are okay. Keep taking good care of your teeth and gums.

Good! I'm glad you're OK. That sort of thing can also be caused by a bit of "toothbrush trauma." Anyway I'm glad your teeth aren't falling out! I hate it when that happens!:p
