Taking Next Week Off?

I'm going to my sister's for Christmas and I don't think I'll be able to work out next week. I've worked out at least 5 times a week (usually 6) for the past six months. I got a little burned out about a month ago and only worked out three times during the week for one week. I'm really worried that I'll gain weight if I don't work out. Or even worse lose my cardio capacity and strength. Is a week long enough to really have a negative impact on me?

My own opinion, which is not worth a heck of a lot:

If you can walk, walk. Find a mall and call to get their opening hours. We all tend to overeat over the holidays, and I personally don't like to not exercise during a week when I know I'll be eating too much. You could do body weight exercises for strength if you don't have portable stuff like tubing to take along.

You could always find a gym where you could work out as a guest, also.

If you just can't work out, don't sweat it and just jump back on the band wagon the minute you get back. Taking a week off in six months is certainly OK.

Just Do It! :)

I'm with Honeybunch, I can't go without exercise when I know I'll be scarfing down a lot of extras... my mindset is so much better if I can even get 2 or 3 workouts in when I'm visiting home for a week. But as Gettingfit said, your body may actually thank you for the rest and you'll end up benefitting from it. Just be sure to get back into your routine when you return without procrastination (it'll be the death of me).

I will be in Chicago for a week without my step, DVD player or any weights above 5#. I am taking along my Cardio Kicks and Powerstrike Millenium II to keep me busy between the ham dinner and the fudge for dessert!

Either way - enjoy your holiday and don't stress over it! ;-)

I've maintained my weight and my fitness level for 7 years and always take off a few days at Christmas. And I've eaten like a pig! If there's an open box of chocolates on Christmas Day, that's where you'll find me. If there's a bag of Doritos, look for my hand in the bag. I leave no pastry, no chocolate, no stuffing unturned, leaving devastation in my wake. I am the Christmas locust.

"I don't care what your name is fat man! Step away from the cookies!"

Oh, but I DO love Christmas. Oh, but I DO hate being so FULL!

So my advice: take a few days off to smell the roses and the cookies. Cathe's workouts will be there waiting for your return.

If you've been exercising consistently you're body may enjoy the rest! Otherwise you can always walk. I usually keep right on with my routine. This year we're staying home so I'll use Christmas as my "OFF" day. I do take time to enjoy the goodies and find even if I can a pound or 2 once I'm back in the swing it goes away.
Give yourself a lil' break and enjoy your Holiday! ;-) Susan

Hi Jennifer,
I have taken 11 days off for a vacation without working out. I had no problem getting right back into things. Actually I was really looking forward to getting back into the workouts and I figure it was good for me. Enjoy yourself. A week is not that long.

Hi there! I seriously would not worry about it! Take the time and enjoy yourself.

This past week and 1/2 I have been sooooo slammed at work and working a ton of hours. With the holidays, the 2 year old and the work schedule I have little to no time to work out! I have only worked out like 5 times in the past 2 weeks and guess what.... I have lost 5 lbs and it isn't muscle loss!
I am usually one to get all worked up about the time off too. It is sooooo weird! Recently when I have been working out I have been working out really hard and burning out a muscle completely when doing weights. I am wondering if it is the fact that I let my body recover more? I have been eating pretty healthy (except for a few holiday cheaters here and there). But for the most part I have cut down my carbs and am trying to eat more protein since I am not doing cardio like usual.

This next week and 1/2 I am off so I will have time to work out a ton! My body feels soooooo rested and ready to rock into the new year! I think it was a very needed break. My knees feel better, I feel all around better.

Maybe you should just truly take the time off and enjoy yourself! Your body might thank you for it!

And heck... it will get you rested for the new intensity series!
