Surgery or more exercise?

Has anyone thought seriously about surgery to get rid of those stubborn lumps and bumps instead of hoping for, and accepting the best with exercise? Yes - even Fitness Instructors have body fat in areas that wont budge:)

Thought about? Yes. Seriously? No. I guess maybe because my lumps aren't TOO bad. I've got a little bit on my belly that never goes away. I probably could get rid of it through diet, if I wanted to obsess over every little thing I eat or drink. I'm sorry - but that takes too much fun out of life.

I'm 37 years old and married. The only person who will ever see me naked (or even close to being naked - I've never been a bikini person) is my husband. Do you think he cares about that little glob? Not a bit! He'd rather have a wife who is healthy, but still willing to go out for some wings and beer once in a while. As far as the rest of the world can tell, my belly is completely flat.

If I was going to do any sort of elective surgery to improve appearances, it would be laser eye correction. Then I could go swimming and actually see where I was going! I'm blind as a bat without my contacts.

Nope. I've only considered surgery to ADD some bumps, if ya know what I mean. ;-) Am lucky enough to have a BF who talked me out of it, said I'm perfect just the way I am. :) Sometimes the guy shocks me by saying exactly what I need to hear about the most unexpected things.

I will never go to a surgery for aesthetics reasons.Good has give me this body. I do not have a perfect body like cathe has but I am healthy, I look great and I really enjoy my cathe workouts and the exercise gives me endorhine too.

Agreed...would never do it. My son has had some serious medical issues and that's what I'd do surgery for. His ordeal put everything in perspective. To me now a little cellulite is well just not a big deal.

Sad we sometimes need MAJOR things to put things in perspective. I just have to believe each adversity carries with it a positive blessing.

All the best

Thought about it, yes. Seriously, no! Who doesn't look in the mirror and think, I wish this was more _______ or that was less ______? The more society embraces things like 'The Swan', the less any surgical alterations appeal to me (is it just me or do they all end up looking like some strange variation of a cross dressing Barbie?)
At 42 I have sincerely learned to love my imperfections, they make me, ME! The lower abdominal softness (thank goodness for lycra!) is evidence of 3 pregnancies and 30 years of being heavy. I may never have a 6 pack but I love my 4 pack!!!
I know too many instructors and members who have had their breasts done, tummies tucked, eyes and faces lifted and that's their God given right but no thanks!! I keep reminding my self that it's not a health club, it's a fitness club!! The recovery stories alone are enough to turn me off, one instructor had a tummy tuck last October and still has to modify ab work. Another has breasts that are freakishly round and completely out of proportion with her build and is the brunt of too many cruel jokes by members. Don't even get me started on the wind tunnel faces post lift.
To each their own, I feel so completely blessed to be healthy and well and am grateful that I have healthy self esteem and acceptance, lumps, bumps and all:)

You know, shows like The Swan & Extreme Makeover have actually turned me off to surgery. I think the people who go on the show might actually benefit from a little "tweaking" so to speak--I mean some of them do have some pretty serious cosmetic issues w/teeth, noses, etc--but they always go way too far & the result is so plastic & fake looking it's like, what's the point? They don't even look human anymore.

I have a friend who was my best friend when we were kids. She's very slender and flat chested. Her teeth are also crooked, but otherwise she's a pretty woman. She was married to this total ass who told her he would pay for her to either get a breast enlargment or get her teeth straightened. I told her to go for the teeth.

He told me I didn't know what I was talking about. Can you believe that? I have a very small frame and am only 5'0" tall, but I wear a 34C bra (which looks larger on a small frame). I also had a huge overbite when I was in my early teens. I had braces and got my teeth straightened. And I spent my teens being teased about my chest. Then I spent my early 20's covering them while walking through crowds, so men wouldn't "accidentally" brush them. I also endured the mistaken idea that women who are large chested are easy.

Now that I'm older, I still wouldn't mind a smaller cup size. But I no longer really care. However, I would STILL get my teeth fixed if it was necessary.

As for my friend, she never had either done and divorced the jerk.

Exercise or surgery?

How about a third way? Self-acceptance. Make peace with who you are and how you are. Maybe it's the only road to lasting contentment. It's a life's project: I'm still working on it myself, so, join the club!

I have thought "wouldn't it be nice..." but I would never do it. As long as I'm exercising my flaws don't bother me! For me, "it is what it is when it is what it is!" :) :)

Maximus - you always make me smile with your comments. Yeah, I know what you mean - bigger "bumps" may even out my lumps. Ive always wondered how those Fitness Models with very large breasts (mostly implants I know) can even perform cardio! Weight lifting would be fine, but running etc, ouch!!!

Well, yes, errr, IIII, uuuhh DID! Not once but 2X. I succumbed to lipo. I do regret the liposuction but not the tummy tuck or the having the twins lifted :) I had lipo on the lower body done and the results I must say were spectacular. However, any little bit of fat that I now consumned went to my back and arms. So I had lipo done on my arms. Great results but fat now goes to other places, like just above the knees. The bottom line is I will not do it again!! I could of saved alot of $$ and taken pride in the fact that the body I had was a result of lots of hard work and dedication. The example I set for my children about taking care of our bodies by exercise and healthy eating are invaluable. And like another member pointed out, when something such as surgery on a child comes along, lipo suddenly becomes the last thing that could ever enter the mind. It really puts things in perspective. Somehow those small lumps and bumps we might have on or bodies are just small bumps and lumps on the road of life.

I think about surgery now and then. I would not mind having a small tummy tuck and maybe my breast done. I'm 5'4 and 107lbs. I know you all are saying tummy tuck she is crazy, but since I lost 19 pounds I have a flat stomach but excess skin(I also have been pregnant twice and I was all stomach for both). Breastfeeding both of my girls did a number on the boobs. I was a B cup, but now I'm wearing those Playtex nearly A's. I just want my B's back. I do not know if I would ever actually do it, maybe if someone else footed the bill. I can think of a lot of other ways to spend 10 grand.

Clare, BEAUTIFUL post. You said what I wanted to say here, but much more eloquently and gently than I would have done so ... }( Thank you.

I applaud BooBoos honesty over her cosmetic surgery, and Im so happy that she had tremendous results. What she experienced with body fat returning in places there was no problem in before, is a worry but its something Ive heard lots of times. I dont know if my body can afford any "extra" popping up in the name of thinner thighs. My 'pet peeve" area is my love handles, or muffin tops (as we call them in Aussie). Not a huge amount of hang over but enough to annoy me because they wont shift! Also with implants, I think they have a life span of 10 years, before the sag sets in like natural breasts, so if you have a boob job at age 30 - thats alot of breasts you need to buy in a life time!. :)
Speaking of implants, that Jack Osbourne apparently has Paris Hiltons first pair of implants, framed on his bedroom wall! - Hmmmmmm :)
