Supplement/Appetite Supressant

I know this may be a taboo subject for some, but here goes. My son has a chronic illness and sometimes when he is in the hospital for long periods of time, when he is hospitalized I lose some of my good eating habits and bad habits enter. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good appetite suppressant to help me get back on track. I do not want to go out and waste my money on something that does not work very well. I am back with my working out and trying to eat healthier again, but I need a little boost. Any suggestions on what could work? Thanks for any help.

Hi Ivy. It is so tough as a mother to take care of yourself when you are busy taking care of your kids, especially when they are ill, but you will feel so much better and be a better mom when you do, and it sounds like you know this! Honestly, I would stay away from pills-- they can be quite dangerous!

There are so many ways to calm down your hunger naturally. Try drinking lots of water and green tea. Fill up on complex carbs with tons of fiber like apples, berries, melon, celery, oatmeal, whole grains and shredded wheat. I also try to always have some fat or protein with my carbs, or I get hungry sooner. You can make your own trail mix to take on-the-go with nuts, seeds and dried fruit, or make a protein shake before you head out the door or grab a mozzarella cheese stick. Hummus and veggies make an awesome low-fat snack. Also, yogurt mixed with some ground flax seed and a little protein powder or cottage cheese is very satisfying. For dinner stick to lean meat with salad or veggies and a small portion of rice or half a sweet potato.

If you eat a small meal or snack (around 300-400 calories) every 3 hours, you will have lots of energy and won't get so hungry that you are tempted by unhealthy food. Just wash and chop up a bunch of veggies ahead of time or you can buy pre-washed spring mix lettuce, sugar snap peas and baby carrots. Be sure to have plenty of fruit around so it is always available and throw the junk food in the garbage so it isn't in the house. Cook up a big batch of rice -I like basmati-so it is ready for quick meals. If you like chicken, there are lots of places that sell whole rotisserie-style chickens already cooked that you can use in so many ways. Find books or websites that motivate you to get healthy and read them often. Stay away from the fast food drive-thru too. Good luck getting back on track! I hope your son is feeling better.

I am sorry I'm getting back to you so late. I have been busy with my son, thank you so much for your advice, when you are not getting your usual amount of sleep that interferes with good eating as well. I will take your advice to heart.

Ivy - I agree with Jules and have the personal experience to back it up. I have yet to find an appetite suppressant that actually worked. I think the main reason they don't "work" is because many times when we eat, especially in stressful situations, it isn't because we are actually hungry. If I only ate when I was hungry, I wouldn't have any problems! Jules gave you some great ideas. Pack/plan lots of healthy snacks so that even if you eat everything in your "snack bag" it won't sabotage your healthy eating efforts. You can also try drinking more water to fill you up. Good luck to you.

No reply needed-- I hope get some much-needed rest soon. Sleep deprivation can definitely mess up good habits, both eating and exercise, and bring you down. I know when my children were infants, and I was up half the night feeding them, it was so hard to work out the next day, but I always felt better when I did and had more energy too. I am sure you spend a lot of sleepless nights taking care of and thinking about your son. I hope he is having a good day today.
