Sunflower Seed Butter

(just thought I'd share)

After a dear friend finally convinced me to try Almond Butter, I fell in love with it! YUMMY.....I have been eating 1T with a banana or apple each day and LOVE that mini meal.

I ran out last week, and the health food section of my grocery store was out of almond butter! But I looked at the other choices.....cashew butter, soy nut butter, sunflower seed butter.......and decided to try the sunflower seed butter. WOW! I'm impressed and love it just as much.....it tastes like sunflower seeds (obviously) and has a bit of crunch. So it's like eating crunchy peanut butter from my childhool (heck, from my adulthood too).

Anybody else try this and like it? Or try another kind of healthier nut butter and can recommend it???

p.s. since discovering these new gems, my beloved PB2 has been sitting in the back of my cabinet, lonely and sad! ;)

I also love Sunbutter and use it as a complete replacement for peanut butter (even in recipes!). One of my kids is peanut-allergic, so it is a must (though he wouldn't dream of eating anything with sunbutter in it himself.. but just having peanut-containing items around is dangerous, so we never have peanut stuff in the house). The good news is that the sunbutter is such a great product with such a similarlity to the flavor and consistency of peanut butter, that I don't even miss peanut butter! I get mine at Trader Joe's- it is less expensive than at Whole Foods or the regular grocery stores and it is delicious!

I think most nut butters are nutritionally superior to peanut butter (and safer, since most peanuts contain aflatoxins).

I've tried almond (my favorite), sesame (otherwise known as tahini), cashew (though I'm avoiding cashews most of the time now, as they have been found to be high in mycotoxins, and cashew butters always have oils added), brazil nut (high in selenium, which many people are deficient in), macadamia nut (can you say decadent!).

I've also seen, but not tried, walnut, hazelnut, pistachio, pumpkin and pecan butters. Hemp seed butter I wasn';t too impressed with (though I like hemp seeds themselves).

Living Tree Community has a nice selection of raw nut butters (pretty much everthing mentioned above except the pecan butter), including some interesting-sounding combos, and some yummy-sounding mixes with coconut butter : http://www.livingtreecommunity.com/store2/products.asp?catid=1

I love all kinds of nut butters, but be careful with cashew butter.. cashews are related to poison ivy and eating a lot of them can cause hypersensitivity and really bad reactions to poison ivy, even in people who have previously not had any reaction at all.
