Summer Reading

I was wondering if someone could suggest a good book(s) to read. I have read the Janet Evanovich series and I love them. I love to read but I find that I am reading the same old stuff. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

David McCullough's incredible biography "John Adams", about our second President (and father of our sixth president). McCullough's writing style is so incredible lucid, and his treatment of an often overlooked Founding Father is one of deep love and respect.

Colin Powell's autobiography "My American Journey". IMHO Colin Powell is one of America's most intriguing, and trustworthy, public figures, and his history is almost symbolic.

Hi Susan,

"Seabiscuit: An American Legend" by Laura Hillenbrand is quite good. I think almost everyone I work with has read it and loved it. It's got that heartwarming, inspirational quality.

If you're looking for something a little edgier - dark, sarcastic humor - then I'd recommend Tony Bourdain's books "Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly" and "A Cook's Tour: Global Adventures in Extreme Cuisine" (I'm in the middle of that one right now). Also anything by David Sedaris.

The best book I've read in years, and I read a lot, is The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell. It's her first novel, about first contact, but isn't really very science-fictiony. The characters and what they go through are fascinating, although you have to be patient for the first few chapters as she introduces and develops the characters. It's worth it, I promise.

It has a sequel, which is good, but The Sparrow is amazing.

Hey A-jock,

Do you ever watch 24? I'm just wondering because I wondered if President Palmer's character on 24 and Colin Powell's are similar.

Won't make sense if you don't watch it though! hehe

I'm finding J.D. Robb rather interesting, any of his novels featuring Detective Eve Dallas.

Here are a couple of good ones, can't recall the authors' name though:
Standing At The Scratch Line and Echoes Of A Distant Summer.

I keep track of the books I read and tapes I listen too because I go through so many every year. I will post more titles tomorrow if you'd like. A few of the books I've read since the start of this year have been suggested right here on this forum. You might want to run a search for the posts.

I am currently reading The Sparrow and I am totally loving it. It is a very different and unique read at least for me! Very interesting.

Created for Commitment by A.Wetherell Johnson This is the autobiography of the founder of Bible Study Fellowship. It is very interesting so far. We truly live in a different time with different values. She lived her life in faith and God provided every step of the way.

Question for firmfreeze

I will have to check out Created for Commitment. What other Christian authors or Bible studies do you enjoy? Beth Moore is one of my personal favorites for women's Bible study.

Thanks Angie,
I will be checking out the library soon. If you have time to post more titles it would ge great. Thanks again.

Betsy...

I am also waiting for the Harry Potter. I can't wait!!! These books are such page turners! I hate that I usually finish them in a couple of days. I remember the first one I picked up at the grocery store thinking "now what is all this hype about". Well, I got home that day sat in a chair started reading and I didn't get up until I had finished it.

I don't know what it is about these books. They are just so creative and entertaining.

Aside from HP, there is a very good book called A Fine Balance. I can't remember who it was by but I know it was an Oprah book-Very good book.

Here are a few that pop into my head that I remember really truly enjoying:

The Corrections
Empire Falls
Life of Pi
Cane River
The Thorn Birds
Gone with the Wind
Bridget Jones Diaries
The Nanny Diaries
Icy Sparks
Memoirs of a Geisha

Of course, I can't remember all of the authors but you can search for them on Amazon.com. My idea of a good book is either "mindlessly entertaining" or "something I can sink my teeth into" but they ALL must be compelling or I can't get through it

Just thought I would add that J.D. Robb is actually a female. Her real name is Nora Roberts. She writes a lot of novels under her real name as well. You may want to check her out.

Hi Gayle!

Just in case you are interested, Seabiscuit is being made into a movie. It was filmed earlier this year. The horse race was taped here in Lexington at Keeneland. I think the movie is scheduled to be released sometime this year.

I just finished a great read by Nicholas Sparks called"The Guardian". He has a few other good books as well. I am starting on John Grisham's new book "King of Torts" today. I love all the James Patterson thrillers too! Susan(just like you! ;-) )

I've read and enjoyed alot of the books Oprah has listed under her Book Club list. They're not just mindless reading...but books that have substance. I hate reading books written by Danielle Steel or anything like that. Wally Lamb's books are very good.
Happy reading!!!

Kristi - thanks for stating that! I didn't know J.D. was female. I just figured it was a guy, none of the books on tape that I've listened too have ever had a picture of the author. You know, if I wrote that well, I would have my pictured plastered all over my work! :7 But I guess she doesn't because she's writing under two names? Oh well!

Oprah's listings always contains at least 3 books that any type of reader would enjoy! (Enjoyed Wally Lamb's books.)You can also check the listing at US News & World Reports. I think that contains the top 100 sellers of the week.

Okay here's that list I promised:

Those two books I mentioned Standing At the Scratch Line and Echoes Of A Distant Summer were written by Guy Johnson (Maya Angelou's son)

1)Chopping Spree, 2)Prime Cut, 3)Stick and Scones by Diane Mott Davidson. Caterer/mystery solver series. Kind of funny, nice recipes. If you like the Evanovich books, you'll enjoy these.

1)The Murder Book, 2)Flesh and Blood, 3)The Clinic, 4)Blood Test all by Jonathan Kellerman

1)The Harris Men, 2)The Harris Family, by R.M. Johnson

Burn Factor, by Kyle Mills

Any Alex Cross/John Sampson novels by James Patterson

1)Married Men, 2)Baby Momma Drama by Carl Weber (funny, at times steamy, can get you a little ticked at some of the characters) :)

1)Dying To Please, 2)Mr. Perfect, 3)Open Season, by Linda Howard

Lord Of The Kongo, by Peter Forbath

In Her Defense, Stephen Horn

1)Right As Rain, 2)Hell To Pay, by George Pelecanos

1)The Lovely Bones (great book), 2)Lucky (it was alright, very moving at the beginning but I didn't think it was as well written as the Lovely Bones, just my opinion)

Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki

The bizzare and supposedly scary group would include: Bentley Little, Dean Koontz and Stephen King

I like a lot of detective and true crime novels too. Murder and horror! If you like history or portions of it, I would recommend reading the magazine The Civil War Times.

Hope this was helpful! Of course some fo the more serious books that I've read are failing to come to mind. I'm sure you don't want to know about the biology and human anatomy books I read for fun! :+

Enjoy your summer reading!

RE: Betsy...

I remember reading Gone With the Wind when I was in college. I stayed up an entire night and read the whole thing. Needless to say, I didn't make it to class that day.

I recently reread all of the Harry Potter books just to "catch up" for the new one. The Lord of the Ring books are very good too. There is much more to the story than is in the movies, although I love the movies too.

RE: Betsy...

I loved Gone with the Wind. I couldn't believe I waited so long to read it!(I'm 28 and read it for the first time last year)

I also just finished Goblet of Fire for the second time, last week! I must have it all fresh in my memory!!

:7

Hi Kristi,

I was able to watch the Seabicuit trailer on the web site a few weeks ago. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the movie.
