Sugar Cut Question...causing acne?

For those of you who have cut out simple sugars...ALL simple sugars...did you experience a brief acne surge in the beginning? Tell me about the side effects on your complexion.

TIA!!!

Sarah -

During this month's "No Sweet" challenge, I did notice that my skin broke out a little more than usual during TTOM. Could have been due to other factors, too, I guess. I just stepped up the skin care routine and now everything's back to normal!

I cut out a lot of sugar this month, but not every last little gram, so I can't really say how that would affect my complexion. My skin looks very nice though. I can't complain.

When I struggled with adult acne a few years ago, my dermatologist had me try several different treatments, and he would always say before I started a new treatment that the acne would get worse before it got better. And he was almost always right. Pimples take weeks to form under the surface of the skin - when you start a new acne treatment, it accelerates this process so the ones that are already forming start popping up faster, but no new ones start forming. So what you get is more breakouts at first, as your skin tries to push all the forming pimples up to the surface and get rid of them. Then, the skin starts to clear. This is my very limited understanding of the process. I wonder if eliminating sugar, as an acne treatment, would have the same affect on some people - it gets worse before it gets better. Could be, but I don't know for sure...

Interesting...........I have read numerous articles about cutting out simple sugars and how your skins appearance should improve - but maybe it does get worse before getting better........your body could be driving all the crap out of it first - LOL - I think I should try this! I am always battling breakouts - I finally have it under control but only because I am taking an antibiotic daily for it - I hate the idea of not being able to handle my breakouts naturally.....

Sarah - I just checked out your picture trail - WOW! You look fantastic!! Not only that, but I can totally see the effects of the P90X rotation!!! That is amazing!!! Did you use P90X and Hardcore?? Have you adjusted your eating habits at all when you did that rotation! I just cannot get over how quickly it toned your muscles and they were toned to begin with!!!

You should post something in Open Forum on your rotation that you did and what you were eating - we all know its not just workouts but a combination of diet/excercise!

Ok this is new to me. Some people get acne because of cutting out simple sugars? Why is the scientific basis behind that (if any)?. I started the no sweets challenge for this month and I cut down my added sugar intake to 50g or less a day (this is the way it's supposed to be so I'm going to do it for life now). I have noticed a couple of small white heads that I never had before, but I can't say it is because of cutting out sugars. My skin always gets like this in the summer, especially since temperatures have been over 95 over here. So at the moment I can't say it is because of cutting out added sugars. I'll see in the fall how my skin is going to be.

My skin cleared up almost immediately. I have been off of sugar since last October and now if I do have a piece of cake or something like that I break out the very next day! I have never had great skin, but since I got off of sugar I've had several comments on how great my skin looks! Anyway, in answer to your question, I did not have a surge of acne.

I believe what you're telling me but I'm not sure whether this is a result of giving up simple sugars or a coincidence. I have been battling acne for 30+ years and as my doctor likes to say "it's the hormones, stupid!" (although he really doesn't call me stupid). Unless the dietary change affects the hormonal balance of the body, I don't see how this could be happening. But, I'm not willing to discount any theory at this point. My acne has never been affected by any dietary change I have made, but that's me. And, as well all know, a female body is so complex, who knows entirely what systems affect others?
