Okay, raise your hand if you're addicted to Sudoku puzzles. I CANNOT stop! Anyone else hopelessly addicted?

-Nancy

YUP!

I love puzzles but I have trouble doing word ones (I try only to help with my vocab). The sudoku are right up my ally (i'm an enginerd).

I have a book of them that has a challange in the back with a 16x16!

Jeanette

Kathryn, they are a number puzzle the is a 9x9 square which has smaller 3x3 squares inside. Each row, column and 3x3 box has to contain the numbers 1-9. There is no adding involved! Check out

Yep - I am! I even make DH drive when we go out, put in DVD for the kids, and pull out the puzzles. What fun!

Me! Me! Me! (Raising hand enthusiastically!) First thing I grab from the paper in the morning. Found a website that I sometimes will visit after my son is in bed and I just want to veg. Love them!! Love puzzle books too...that's my little guilty pleasure that I occasionally use to treat myself. :)

Thanks, Jeannette!
I think those would drive me nuts--WAY too much thought involved, LOL! I prefer crosswords (when travelling---no time otherwise) and word games.

Lorrie- do you find you look up and a few hours have slipped by? I fear they are a waste of time because I'm not learning anything, but my DH says they are keeping my mind sharp. (I think he just likes how quiet I get while I'm doing them :+ ).

That looks like the kind of thing I would throw across the room in a fit of frustration! I'm hoplessly incapable of that sort of puzzle--I prefer a good book.

oh THANKS for posting this!!! I wanted to get a book of them for my mom- she's addicted.

Do any of you have any books you would recommend of the puzzles?? TIA!

Kathryn, I love crossword puzzles and all word games. But these little puzzles are little logic games, and they are just as fascinating as crosswords. DO NOT TRY ONE. THEY ARE DANGEROUS TIME-EATERS!

-Nancy

Yes - the time FLIES! And I agree with your DH - they do keep the mind sharpened. Mostly I do them to drown out the babbling children though.

Lorrie

I have been playing online but I am very slow. If I am smokin' 70% of the players are faster than me. I don't get it, if I do an easy one it takes between 7 and 11 minutes and 70% are faster? Geez how fast are these people?

I have a small magazine sized "book". It has three levels plus the challange at the back. There are also a few that are called "extreme" where you have to have the "cross" rows with 1-9. My opinion, those are easier.

Since the game is popular there are a bunch of books out now. If you can find them I would recommend at least a easy, medium, hard options. Your brain needs a break now and then. Acutally, it kinda reminds me of cathe workouts!!!!

That is so funny that you posted this. I love doing puzzles and I just finished a book that had a variety of them but I wanted one with just the sudoku and one with just the logic puzzles since those are my two favorites so I went to Wal-Mart today to pick up those books and then I saw this post. How ironic. I don't think they are a waste of time because you really have to think and concentrate and is so much better than sitting around watching TV when the kids go to bed.

Nancy, thank you thank you THANK YOU for posting this today!!! I have now completed my shopping for my mom. I needed one more thing, and this was it!!! I checked with my dad and he replied:

Amy,
We are absolutely hooked on Sudoku puzzles --- we make two copies of the one from the newspaper every day (except Sunday) and finish it after breakfast before doing anything else. For what it’s worth, Michael Mepham seems to be the newspaper(?) guy (in England) who popularized the fad. We bought his “Book #1” in the airport, and it’s almost done --- good timing! Generally the books have a mix of gentle and demanding puzzles, and that’s fine. All easy ones wouldn’t be so fine, nor would all extremely difficult. (The super hard ones require that you make a guess at some point, and then continuing working to see if your guess was correct. If not, you have to go back to where you guessed and make the alternative choice. Meanwhile, you have filled in an unknown number of squares with incorrect numbers. Sorta kills the fun.

So now I'm thinking when the books arrive I'll take them to Kinko's and copy some of the puzzles to save them the trouble. ;) Merry Christmas!!!! wahoo!!!

Think of it this way, since you're creeping up on your 50th birthday at a feverish pace - puzzles and games keep your mind sharp!!! So puzzle away!!!!

I love to watch Jeopardy, so my mind will be sharp as a tack, since I know it will be on TV for years. When Alex Trebek retires, they'll get someone else to host it, so I don't have to worry about it stopping with him!
Just Do It! :)

My husband got my 12 year old hooked on these last week. They have already cracked the formula for doing them and are now moving on to newer logic-defeating pastures!!!

I am in awe because numbers just are not my thing. Like Kathryn, I am totally word orientated.

Keep going Nancy. It's true that daily mental challenges keep you young!

Ivory, I think 7-11 minutes is very fast. I know I've played Boggle online and I just can't believe the reported times. I think there is something out of whack about the timing online. I think 7-11 minutes is excellent.
