Thanks you guys! I was making them from scratch to put in a casserole so I didn't know if I had to cook them a bit first.

By the way, Renee, you can cook hash browns with just a little cooking spray but the grease is soooooo gooood!!

And Jes, mmmmm.....salty hash browns! I used to go to a restaurant for just the side of hash browns. It cost $2.50 and I swear they used 6 or 7 potatoes for one serving! So greasy and salty!!!

MMM..on the subject of potatoes fried in grease: when I was a kid, my dad would make fried potatoes. Here's the general recipe:
take one big glob of saved bacon grease, fry onions and cooked (boiled) potatoes in. When they are almost done, tear up some white bread and press it into the excess grease to soak it up and fry the bread. Serve! It tasted sooo good! (though now, eating that much fat at once would make me sick to my stomach.

When I became vegetarian, dad changed the bacon grease to crisco or some other solid veggie fat.

I recently heard a suggestion to use daikon radish instead of potatoes for hash browns and fries (I bake my "fries"). I picked some up and intend to try it sometime this week.

Wow, that sounds incredible, Kathryn! I've been vegetarian for almost eight years now and just about the only thing I miss is bacon and it's evil progeny: bacon fat. I have only tried daikon radish raw (I wouldn't recommend it), but I haven't baked one yet!

ROFL! I thought your post was titled "stupid question, re: hash BROWNIES". I thought this site was REALLY going to get interesting!!!!

You'd want to cook both your hash browns and hash brownies!

LOL Donna!!!

I've been making a healthy version of hashbrowns. I bake several potatoes & keep them in the fridge. Then for breakfast I will spray a pan w/Pam and grate the entire potato (peel and all) and add some salt & pepper. It takes about 5 minutes til they get brown. I usually eat it with a turkey burger so I get my carbs & protein. YUM!!!!
