Stupid question re: dog food

What would you do? My 5-y.o. golden retriever has a weight problem, but is otherwise very healthy (hey - kinda' like me! :))

We feed her Natural Choice dog food and for the last 2+ years had her on the weight management food, which really didn't help a lot. About 4 months ago I discovered that Natural Choice made a "lite" food which had fewer calories, so I switched her over. It's really made a difference -- she has slimmed down nicely, and now that Spring is here she clearly has more energy and spunk.

We were running low on food and DH decided to be helpful (you KNOW where this is going) so I would have to hit one less errand today. He of course swung by PetSmart and got a 40-lb bag of the weight management food. Ugh! I am so tempted to call my local humane society to see if I can donate that, and go get the lite food. She's just getting on the right track and I feel like I would be derailing her. Is that stupid? This bag will last a little over a month. Would you just give her smaller portions of this stuff, or donate and switch? TIA

If she is doing well on the lite food, then I'd keep with it. Donate the bag your DH bought and go get the stuff she's used to eating. That was very thoughtful of your DH though.

Donating the food is an option, but Petsmart (Petco too) takes back opened food, no problem at all. While there, buy an inexpensive bag if you want to donate. The dogs at the shelter just need food, not the premium stuff b/c it isn't consistently fed to them.
