Stupid appliance question

Hi all. I have a 3-yo side by side refrigerator freezer that I got from Sears. Lately it's malfunctioning where it cannot dehumidify extra moisture in the fridge. So everything gets sopping wet, the shelves are covered in pools of water, and there is a puddle in the bottom. It goes for about 3 days of doing this, followed by 3-4 days of normal operation and then the humidity problem repeats.

Had service out 2x. First they pulled out and replaced the cold air vent from fridge side - which was frozen solid (the moisture collects in there and then when it cools it freezes). That didn't work. Then they installed a small fan somewhere inside - that's not working. So yesterday I called for service again, and the young man on the phone suggested that I should unplug it and let it sit for 2-4 hours everytime this happens. HUH? I asked him if he was serious - "yes, ma'am" he says.

Should I have to do this? I'm kinda thinking if I have a 3-y.o. refrigerator I shouldn't have to defrost it once a week - but maybe I'm wrong. How long to refrigerators last?

You absolutely should NOT have to do that. I think they should replace it for you. That's just crazy. I've purcahsed a few appliances from Sears and I won't buy from them anymore because their customer service is terrible and I've always had to wait for forever for a service call.

I bought a new stove from them a couple of years ago and the paint is chipping off! It looks horrid. We called about this and they sent us into the store for a small bottle of appliance paint!x( The finish on their appliances is crap.

I don't know much, but I REALLY think that last service tidbit is ridiculous! Unplug it every time this happens?! That's insane - you shouldn't have to babysit an appliance. A fridge should last well beyond 3 years. I don't know what you're warranty says, but it sounds like a bigger problem than a quck service call can fix. Have you asked/looked into a replacement (under the warranty)?

Looking at replacement is my next step if this doesn't work. I should add that when repairman no 2 was out we DID let it sit unplugged for about 3 hours and defrost completely - so if the thought was that that should somehow correct the problem, it did not. I did have a washer from Sears that worked ok - just not the way the video said it should. After I used it for a year I complained about that and they took it back and upgraded me to a new model. So I'll give them one more shot. Thanks!

Of course you shouldn't have to do that! 3 years is almost new for a refrigerator. I believe they're supposed to go for about 10 years. Make them take it back and reimburse you every penny, and do not take "no" for an answer.

I am with Nancy. Sears has been sliding down that hill of credibility for some time now, and their acquisition of Kmart has not helped them at all, imo.

That company just isn't what it used to be. I just had my frig repaired and I asked the repairman his opinion of refrigerators in general. He said they are all pretty close in quality, but he also said a good one should last 10-15 years. Considering they are mostly plastic components anymore is the big difference between the old units and the new.

My fridge has a similar problem. If someone leaves the door ajar, it freezes up somewhere(?) and the fridge stops cooling. I have to un-plug it until everything thaws and then plug it in again. I also have a BIG problem with all my produce freezing. Everything else in the fridge is a good temperature, but anything in a crisper freezes.:-( Not good for lettuce.

Yes, I bought it from Sears and it's a Maytag. It's about 8 yrs. old now, but this has always been a problem along with major ice machine issues in the beginning. The ice machine issues were all fixed with the warranty, thank goodness.
